Still In LA County

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously rejected a petition to move 1,800 acres from the northern end of the County into neighboring Kern County.

Clyde Martin of Gorman wanted to adjust the county's boundary to move the legendary truck stop of Gorman to Kern. Gorman is north of the Angeles National Forest just off Interstate 5.

Martin felt that moving the area into Kern made sense given that Kern's county services were closer. The move into Kern would have cost LA County $1 million a year in various taxes.

Supervisor Mike Antonovich who represents the area felt that Martin and his supporters did not adequately show Kern could do a better job of providing services. Indeed, other local residents expressed concern that Kern would not be able to fulfill their needs for services.

That's how many of the residents of LA feel about the sphere of influence along the County/City line.

They feel that the County will more adequately protect them from overdevelopment.

I don't really like Mike Antonovich much but I am glad to see that he helped keep Gorman in LA County. Hats off to him.

As I remember the Times report, several weeks ago, this is not really about county services.

It is about Gorman residents trying to get into Kern County, where the planning regulations are even laxer than those in LA county, so that they can go ahead with their development schemes with even less oversight.
