What's Up In CD5?

A former federal prosecutor, Jack Weiss was elected to the 5th District of the City Council in June 2001 and reelected in March 2005. The district includes parts of the San Fernando Valley and West Los Angeles.

Prior to his election, Weiss served as an Assistant United States Attorney in Los Angeles, where he was assigned to the Public Corruption and Government Fraud Section. Weiss received his law degree from UCLA, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the UCLA Law Review. He received his undergraduate degree with honors from Princeton University. Before returning to law school, he worked as a foreign policy adviser on Capitol Hill and as an arms control researcher in Washington, D.C.

Weiss is a strong supporter of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and both were allies when the Mayor was on the City Council. Most would characterize that those who like Weiss like him, and those that don't, don't.

Weiss has had run-ins with the City Ethics Commission, residents of Lincoln Place and local Westwood business owners whose efforts to start a business improvement district have been stymied by the Councilman.

One of the more recent revelations about Weiss came when it was reported that the Department of Water and Power spends thousands of dollars on delivered bottled water for its offices after spending $1 million to promote the drinkability of its tap water. It was revealed that Weiss, along with fellow Councilman Bernie Parks and Mayor Villaraigosa use contributor money to pay for bottled water for their offices.

Finally, along with "Bitter" Bernie Parks and former Mayor James "Poopy" Hahn, Weiss is one of those LA politicians who has enchanted the local blogosphere so much that he earned himself the name "Wacko Jacko."

So, what's up in CD5?

I would love for a secret Planning Commission meeting to occur in which Holmby Hills were rezoned R-4. I would titter like a schoolgirl.

Glad Brian is back. No offense Mr. Mailander, but you were no substitute for Brian.

CD 5 is as quirky as Weiss. You never know who's ass he's going to kiss. I agree that he can't keep staff. Word is it's because he's a micro-manager.

Weiss needs to go back to law school. He asks the dumbest questions in council. He isn't respected by fellow members. He's a flip flopper and goes with the wind.

For a former Attorney General to align himself so closely to someone with Antonio's criminal history - I guess character isn't a priority for Weiss. Antonio was one court date away from a felony conviction, but the victim failed to show. If convicted Antonio wouldn't be able to vote, much less hold public office. Westside Jews are so hard up for the great Brown Hope that they want to control, just like Bradley, that anybody with an empty suit, quick smile and Jewish consultant would do. Antonio and Weiss are on the same integrity plateau, then we wonder why only 20% of the people vote.

Weiss never heard the phrase "constituent service". He is completely and utterly unresponsive to any requests from district residents for assistance with the City bureaucracy. As a homeowner in CD5, I can't wait until he's termed out. Maybe then we'll get a councilmember whose staff returns calls and letters from constituents.

One person( 8:57), I think its only one, keeps writing about the 'Jewish influence' around Antonio. This person, keeps saying there are Jews supporting AV and he is their pockets. The idiot who posted at 8:57 must think Parke Skelton is Jewish. He is NOT. In fact, Jews supported Hertzberg more in the first round, then switched to AV and Hahn.
8:57, why do you fear or hate Jews?

I didn't post 8:57 but if it walks like a duck......

And Antonio isn't in anybody's pocket? Broad, Burkle, Skelton, Weiss, Ripston, Berman and Waxman - those are some nicely tailored pockets.

In Broads pocket? How?

Burkles pocket??? How?

FYI, Parke, and Burkle are NOT Jewish.

Parke works for liberals. Good for him, depending on your persuasion.

I agree the electoral system is for sale-it is legalized corruption and needs to be changed. But....please, please, please, give me ONE instance where the Mayor has ruled on behalf of a person or group because of contributions recieved.

Gee lets see,
Ameriquest, GlaxoWelcome, PeopleWorks, Barrio Planners, Meruelo and the airport venders from Miami, Homeboy Industries, that water company in the desert, very labor local - except the engineers, there are many many more examples.

And does Burkle and Skelton's Jewish moms know that they are no longer Jewish?

Did anyone catch Weiss on Scarborough country a few months back, after Katrina? Joe kept asking what LAs' plan is in case of a disaster. Jacko kept saying the City didnt have one, but needs one. Joe said, isnt that your responsibility Councilman, since jacko heads up the Citys efforts in that area. Jacko kept saying we need one but we dont have one.
I realize that the issue is better worked on at a county, state federal level, but...what the heck does Jacko do all day???

It's not about hating Jews, it's about keeping Latinos informed and letting them know who pulled the wool over their eyes. Antonio never got $16+ million in state funds for any center in East L.A. like he did for the Weisenthal Center Museum of Tolerance - which you've ever taken a tour, blatantly fails to recognize Latinos in their exhibits, I guess they weren't tolerant enough. But Latinos shouldn't be there anyway, not if they are just going to be tolerated, what a joke!

whats wrong with Skelton??? Has a good reputation-tries not to go negative right off the bat, works for progressives. He seems like the best, at least ethically, in a profession full of money chasing slimebags.

I'm getting tired of harping on the "criminal past" of the Mayor.

It's not like he's Marion Barry who was arrested in office. This stuff was 30+ years ago!

There is no Jewish conspiracy, there is no grand cabal.

If you think that Weisenthal Center does not recognize the relationship with Latinos better, call them.

You'd never know Weiss went to law school because he can't think worth a damn. Remember the Daily breeze published a story about Antonio appointing more people from the westside to his commissions. Weiss needs to learn how to listen before he opens his mouth. He's arrogant, rude and self absorbed. The press conf. he had last week about LAPD now taking 911 calls was hilarious. He stated how he needed to call 911 and got CHP and waited a long time. He's too emotional for a man.
