Open Thread for The Weekend

Rather than post some historic milestone for today, our fodder for open thread is a collection of some of the funnier comments from our readers on our story yesterday regarding the Greig Smith WalMart debacle. Blog away dum dums!

As soon as Mitchell finishes his jelly donut, he'll be posting.

you are right... and Fridays usually suck.

I'm going to get the popcorn because every time Smith or Englander go up against Alger, it ends up being like a one legged man in an ass kicking contest.

Smith usually ends up in the papers looking like a bumbling fool.

Let the games begin.

Northridge got a taste of what CD14 has had and will continue to have for a couple of years. Council members HATE to be upstaged by community members.

That photo of Greig should have him holding numbers. Looks like a mugshot.

Hey Sammy, did Greig pee in your Cheerios or what? He has been taking an ass-kicking on here for 2 days now.

Don't get me wrong, I think he is an idiot, but just curious.

Tell Alger to keep up the good work. Then again maybe he needs to stop doing all this good stuff for the community so we can quit talking about him.

Sam said he doesn't really give a crap about Smith, but its good for ratings to have another council district creaming all over their jeans.

I voted for Greig Smith, just like about 70% of the voters in cd12. He's always getting park up grades and getting streets paved down here. To me that stuff is much more important than this junior high mudslinging going on.

Down here? Down where? CD 12 couldn't be more further north. Ha Ha HA HA It is so far north, it's the last area in Los Angeles.

Look. I'm not Alger fan, but I DESPISE fake posters too.

Walmart already has stores a couple miles away from the spot they wanted to put up a new store. We didn't need another one there. We told that over and over again to Greig Smith and the Walmart people. He listened to the residents' complaints, and made it too hard for Walmart to do their store there. Way to go Greig!

Obviously the previous poster never actually called Smits office as I did. AllSmith ever did was say it was a "done deal". He even went so far as to say that Alger was just "wasting the communities time" in their effort to fight the Wal Mart.

So enough attempting to rewrite history all you Smith lovers. He faught the NC and the NC won.Plain ad simple.

Wal Mart not going in had alot more to do with Algers'trips to Washington and Chicago then anything Smith even thought of doing.

I doubt it is a coincidence that Jim went to Chicago where the land owners are and 4 days later Wal Mart was gone.

For a guy in a "low profile" race he sure is making alot of noise.

Los Angeles (CNS) - Saying he will "lead by example" Jim Alger, Democratic Candidate for the 38th State Assembly seat announced today that he is releasing the first of several candidate endorsement questionnaires.

"I have always fought for transparency in government" Alger said "today I will release the first of what will eventually be many endorsement questionnaires throughout the campaign. The people have a right to know what was said to any special interest group to win their support."

The first questionnaire released was the Sierra Club. It has been made available on the website www.VoteAlger.com.

"The plan is to release these after the interview process has passed" said campaign spokesperson Michael O'Connell, "this way the endorsement process remains fair while the voters are clearly able to see what if any commitments the candidate made and if those commitments collide with the reality of their actions."

"I call on all candidates in the 38th Assembly District to join me in opening the process to the voters. In this age of one scandal after the next surrounding political support and votes, it is the least we can do" Alger concluded.

What does Alger think he is doing? Running for Govorner?

Gotta give him one thing, he is nothing if not consistant.

That's actually pretty smart of Alger to release endorsement questionnaires. If he gets the endorsement we know why and if he doesn't we know why as well.
Either he answered something wrong or the fix was in before he sat down.

Either way, we will be able to see.

To be perfectly honest, his first interaction with our site was actually a screw-up of sorts.

Back on June 21st we received the following tip:

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: LACCD12@aol.com
To: MayorSamYorty@aol.com
Date: Tue, 21 Jun 2005 21:29:57 EDT
Subject: News Tip
Here is a good one. Northridge West Neighborhood Council President, and Neighborhood Council Liaison to Senator Richard Alarcon will be leaving his position with the Senate next month. Why is this news? Because he is leaving to run for either the 38th Assembly District or Challenge CD 12. No wonder the Englander, Smith swipes at Alger over recent weeks. (Both have been telling anyone who will listen that Jim "impersonate a councilman" at a recent LAPD event to obtain "prefferential parking" as well as accuse im of being behind the CD 12 mystery calls over sunshine canyon.

My money is for the Assembly. I only base that on his speaking at a Town Hall in Sylmar last night and a senior center in Santa Clarita tonight.
Here's the funny part. Attached to the e-mail was the following address card.

First Name: Jim
Last Name: Alger
AOL Email: laccd12@aol.com
Other Email: jim.alger@northridgewest.com
Company: NWNC
Title: Councilmember
Work Address: Los Angeles, CA,
The "anonymous" tipster tipping us off to Alger was actually Alger.

How interesting that you left the part where Mayor Frank RETRACTED the statement as it was more like Englander trying to set Jim up.

Geez you guys are pathetic.

The ACTUAL POST on Mayor Sam, has the text crossed out, you had to DELETE a few parts as well...

UPDATE***

I have been in contact with Alger this morning via e-mail and have come to learn that the above e-mail tip we had received did not come from him. Here's his e-mail:

From: jim.alger.pc@northridgewest.com
To: mayorfrank@gmail.com
Date: Jul 7, 2005 11:38 AM
Subject: Fwd: Re: NC & your candidacy

For the record,

laccd12 is NOT affilliated with me, or my campaign. I have an idea of who it is but don't know for sure. Whoever it was went out of their way to make you think it was me, but an email to my council email would have verified.

Please correct this if possible.

Jim Alger
So now the question is, who's laccd12@aol.com? Feel free to spam the hell out of this address until they come clean. From the comments posted already, I think some of you already know!
