GOTV Weekend

With all the talk of hit mail, polls, last minute attacks, and last minute stunts, GOTV weekend has arrived and the fun begins. It is time for the rhetoric to stop and the candidates to roll up their sleeves and drag every last voter out of their homes and into the voting booths.

While we strongly endorse Nick Pacheco in CD 14, we wish all of the candidates luck in their final weekend.

The outcome in CD 10 may be in the bag, but CD 14 is in for a wild ride. Odds are against a 50% plus 1 victory on Tuesday with 10 candidates in the race. Smart money bets on a runoff showdown between Pacheco and Huizar in a January 31 vote.

Blog away! Spew your predictions! Hammer each other silly! We know it is what you cd 14'ers do best!

For those of you with free time this weekend, here is our recomendation:

Phoning and walking both from both the Eagle Rock and Boyle Heights Offices.

Friday: 2pm to 9pm
Saturday: 8am to 9pm
Sunday: 8am to 9pm
Monday: 8am to 9pm
Tuesday: 6am to 8pm

Signs of Struggle
José Huizar is riding Villaraigosa’s coattails in the city council’s 14th District, but Nick Pacheco has loyalists in East L.A.
~ By BOBBI MURRAY

"“I refuse to let him buy any more signs,” sighs Parke Skelton, the über-campaign manager who launched Villaraigosa into the political stratosphere and who now runs Huizar’s effort. “I hate them,” Skelton says. Opponents inevitably take them down, there’s a challenge to replace them, it’s a big waste of energy, plus they cost three and a half bucks apiece.

And signs don’t win campaigns. Huizar may have fewer than Pacheco, but Huizar is the candidate with the hookup. He’s been endorsed by Mayor Villaraigosa, the political man of the hour, and a slew of elected officials followed suit – like, almost the entire City Council – along with every important labor local, plus community and environmental groups.

That translates into precinct walkers, who ply the street in determined clumps of twos and threes, consulting voter lists and nailing down supporters. The “yeses” will then be visited and phoned all day long on Tuesday, November 8, until they vote – or until 8 p.m., whichever comes first."

"...But name recognition does help him, says Jaime Regalado, executive director of the Edmund G. “Pat” Brown Institute of Public Affairs. “Nick Pacheco is a recognized entity, and José has his work cut out for him.” Regalado says Huizar needs to make himself more visible. “José has all the endorsements and is going to have three times the money, but unless he hits the streets, this is not an election he wins..."

"Parke Skelton, who managed Villaraigosa's mayoral campaign and is overseeing Huizar's, said the mayor could be facing a risk.

"This is his backyard and if there is a loss, there will be a perception that there is some weakness there," Skelton said. "Obviously, I don't think that's the case. Antonio Villaraigosa is the most popular elected official in this area. And Huizar is a very good candidate. He's well-known and (has) done a good job in fundraising."

"A separate mailing goes directly after Huizar with complaints about the Los Angeles Unified School

District, where Huizar served as board president.

Some residents of the district are puzzled and disturbed by the attacks on some of their most popular figures.

"As an old, educated, longtime Eastsider, my heart is a little sick because this reminds us just how empty the promises of our leadership have been over the years," wrote one voter.

Is it Huizar and developers, friends of Villaraigosa. I think it was the part where he struck that deal with Zen and he lost 260 million tax dollars for the city for the next 25 years. What an asshole giving away all this money when the city is broke.

When they are afraid for their lives to even enter the bathrooms, that's a big problem. Our children are not animals.

Those employees were there doing nothing anyway, because if they were and you were on the ball Crenshaw HS would have never been in the situation it was losing it's accreditation. And the schools who are also on the brink of having their diplomas deemed worthless would never have happened.

I don't agree with your blogging perception, until I see a study or survey. Thus, most damaging to any campaign are mailers.

This comes from me, a voter.

I'm sure you want to know what I think. You can have all the analysts, consultants, statisticians you want, but what counts is what the average person who does get off their fanny to vote thinks.

This is what I think...the Mailers Alvin sent were damaging to Huizar. It reminded us that people who hold grudges that far back cannot move on in life. It reminded me I would have a stalled government with Huizar. How can we move forward if we have people working for Huizar that are not willing to move on, accept they are wrong for the betterment of all.

The David Sanchez mailers. That one hurt, and it hurt a lot! I understand there are corrupt officials from all ethnic backgrounds not just Latinos, but he put it in our faces, right at our doorstep. And you know whats worst? We knew it all along, but are afraid to speak out and get blacklisted (like the U.S. did to those artist who were accused of supporting communism). Anyways, to see someone as David take extreme measures to do this, shows how we as a community have to wake up and pick our leaders with more intelligence and research. It confirmed our many suspicions about a few in Latino leadership.

Finally we have the Crystal Arceo mailers. This created the most impact. It confirmed David's mailers, what people have been saying at meetings, and our own assumptions to be true and with evidence. Crystal is young, but I know this, she has guts! It takes a young girl sick and tired of career politicians to wake us up. The career politicians who have stepped all over her and the community repeatedly. She is sick and tired. Especially 160 new schools and our Latino leadership failed to bring a new school to Boyle Heights or El Sereno. What does this say? Our kids have filthy bathrooms and did you see the picture of the Huizar developed bathroom at LAUSD HQ? It is a shame. It would be against my moral judgement to vote for Huizar. If you want a future for your students, community and future Latino leadership vote for any other candidate.

PS take my post as you want. I'm giving you a sneak peak at an average voters view. That is all.

Go to Huizar's headqters, yes your paid workers are getting out the vote. But, not for you. The ones who live in the district are voting for Pacheco. The ones who have children in LAUSD are pissed and not pushing Huizar, they're taking the money and don't give a shit.

Ask them. I did.

A Joke

Athena went to her doctor, concerned about the testosterone he had prescribed on her last visit. "Doc, I think I've been taking too much. I'm growing hair in all sorts of weird places." The doctor said, "That's normal. Testosterone causes hair growth. Just where is it growing?" "On my dick."

If you expect us to believe that you were on your way to Huizar's office, but stopped to read this blog before you went..... and then something you read here changed your mind.... then you're some kind of crazy.

So you've been reading all along and then - BOOM - it just hit you today that you should drive over to (X Candidate) instead of Huizar's.

You expect us to believe this crock of shit?

Don't you come on this blog regularly and say that you WERE going to do something for Huizar and then changed your mind?

Because no matter how many posts are here, we all know how few people are actually here. This is a blog for seriously addicted political junkies and/or activists, reporters who like to stay in touch with everything regarding City Hall and a few staffers.

I personally know at least 20 people who read this and have NEVER posted a word.

I can't wait to see what happens after Tuesday. The loser of the CD 14 race can pick up their marbles and go home, taking their volunteers with them and each thread will have dramatically fewer responses.

It's sad that there has never been a solid discussion of the propositions here as opposed to the back and forth of the CD 14 race.

And how come CD 10 doesn't have this candidate bashing going on?
