Council Panel Backs DWP Pact

A Los Angeles City Council panel voted 2 to 0 on Wednesday to recommend approval of controversial pay raises for the Department of Water and Power after the chairman said he feared the economic damage that a strike could cause. The issue is far from final yet, but the showdown is quickly approaching...
The contract, which goes to the full council Tuesday, would raise the salaries for nearly 8,000 DWP workers by at least 17% over five years and, because it is tied to inflation, could increase their pay by as much as 34%.
Some city employee unions have complained that those raises were much higher than the city offered to other unions.
Leaders of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 18 have threatened to strike if the new contract is not approved by Oct. 1, when the current pact expires.
A power outage on Monday that affected 2 million people in Los Angeles has elected officials on edge, even though DWP General Manager Ron Deaton said it had nothing to do with the labor talks.

There was a good op-ed in yesterdays daily News suggesting the DWP becomes 'corporatized' whi ch basically means that its privatized but still owned by the city. The DWP went from 7,000 employees 5-6 years ago to close to 9,000 today.Tthere is no way ANY Mayor ( Hahn or Tony) can stand up to the public employee unions. In addition, the union leadership cares about jobs but not about morale. Which is why govt workers are always unhappy. they know the system doesnt reward or punish good or bad behavior.
AV needs to make a bold move and tell the DWP to cut waste and stop adding all these unnneeded jobs or else he will 'privatize or corporatize the Dept.

AV will never tell Darcy and the rest of IBEW to compromise. Darcy will have his crew cut another cable. AV is too scared of doing something bold. Look at the major subsidy the city is giving to the Stable Center clan for developing the Convention Center Hotel and LA Live. You might as well throw money in the street. Why should these rich guys get all this free money that the tax payers have to fork out. AV could have taken a bold step here and killed it, but he won't. AV is scared of Eli and Anshultz of the world. Don't forget who AV worked for when he left the Speakers office, Burkle!! How is able to speak out or do anything, he's beholden to them.

You are right about the staple center rip-off-socialize the debt, privatize the profits. Why not have the city be a part owner of the hotels for the subsidy given. They will say well, the city benefits by the increased taxes. thats not enough, in my mind.

The funny thing about the entire article it doesn't state which panel voted for it.
More information and journalistic integrity swept under the rug to protect AV.

Dumbasses, DWP is already coporatized.
Hal Lindsey, Assistant General Manager (ex Edison), Henry Martinez, Assistant General Manager- Power (ex Edison), Ed Miller, System Head- Power (ex Edison). You really think they care what happens to the citizens of L.A.? It's about the money & liability.
Deaton, c'mon these guys are probably lying to him too. How would he know?
Where have you people been? The current reasoning at DWP is you don't have to know anything to be a manager. Employees are going to do the work anyway.
Might want to rethink that.

IN BRIEF/LOS ANGELES COUNTY/LOS ANGELES
Mayor Says He'll Abide by DWP Pay Decision
September 20, 2005
On the eve of a City Council vote on controversial pay raises for Department of Water and Power workers, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Monday he would abide by any decision.
The package would increase the salaries of nearly 8,000 DWP workers by at least 17% over five years and possibly by as much as 34%, depending on inflation.
"It's in the council's court," the mayor said. "They are going to make a decision. When they do, I will support that decision, whatever it is."
