Speakers Invade City Hall?
First we had Villaraigosa in '01, and the rerun in '05. '05 also featured Hertzberg. Now we have Wesson making it official tomorrow morning outside of City Hall announcing he is running for CD10.
We also know Cardenas wanted to be Speaker, Ludlow worked for two of the previously mentioned Speakers (MEAV and Wesson), and Huggybear is still active chairing MEAV's transition. Hertzberg is known to be an ally of Wesson and most assuredly will be involved in his campaign as well. As this all happens in Fabian Nunez's backyard, one should rest assured he should be throwing his endorsement into the ring at some point.
In other news, MEAV has proposed a Hertzberg-esque plan where the City of LA Mayor would appoint the entire school board, much as he appoints various city commissions. This is an interesting idea and should be explored. Mayor Riordan tried to stack the school board with people he felt would be sympathetic to reform - and did succeed with his slate - but he got bored later and the teachers' unions steam rollered his candidates when they came up for re-election.
The most tragic loss of which was former School Board President Caprice Young, who has to be one of the most thoughtful, passionate and intelligent elected officials ever in Los Angeles history. This woman was an asset to the LAUSD - and what the unions and a select group of NIMBYS in cahoots with a fellow board member was a tragic shame. The guy we wound up with instead of Caprice is an all out loser.

Mayor Sam, you forgot another City Hall conection to the Speakership. Cindy Montanez will be running for Alarcon's seat and Alarcon will be running for Cindy's Assembly seat to position himself for Speaker. Ironically, Padilla, who holds Alarcon's former city council seat, will be running against Montanez for Senate. Just like the Molina vs. Alatorre fights in the 80's for Latino control of East L.A., this is shaping up to be a winner take all match for Latino control of the Valley. Pacas versus Sanfra, it's long overdue.

Tofu Girl is probably right. And its not even control of the entire East Valley, just the Northern part and maybe a sliver of North Hollywood tagged on.

Politicians are all crooks and liars, burn them at the stake...
Wish we could do that now!

At this point why have elections or better yet have elections for a ONE year term. Didn't someone say the city council turnover this year is 20%. I think constituents need to get tough on their electeds and hold them accountable and change the damn charter so they just can't leave when they want to.

Councilman positions are just stepping stones to the greed of higher office. Example: AV.
He is just one of many who have done this, are presently in the process of leaving the office before the term is due, and those that will do this in the future.
It is unfortunate the constituents have to take the burden of SUPPORTING these individuals with PUBLIC FUNDS for the fiestas and political rendevous. Yes, politicians are on THE PUBLIC PAYROLL, if you do not like the manner they have governed, you have the right to FIRE THEM! GET RID OF INCOMPETENCE...AV WON'T LAST.

CAN WE SAY CIVIL SERVANTS ARE INDENTURED PAID SERVANTS?
ARE POLITICIANS ON THE UPSCALE PAY OF WELFARE, THEY TAKE OUR MONEY, THEY TAKE OUR TAX DOLLARS AND SPEND THEM AS THEY WISH, WHY NOT ELIMINATE THEM.

welfare is no longer what it used to be, politicians are on welfare. They have to depend on public funds to get paid, pathetic.

AV IS ON WELFARE, PACHECO MIGHT BE ON WELFARE, HUIZARE HAS BEEN APPLYING AND KEEPS GETTING MASSIVE WELFARE CHECKS, LAURA CHICK LAUNDERS THE WELFARE DEPARTMENT.
I WOULD RATHER LIVE IN CUBA THEN LIVE IN A CORRUPT COUNTRY THAT SUPPORTS AV AND HIS CROOKS.

MEAV is going to surprise the city with how great he does, Jimmy Blackman is handsome bright and divorced. He is loyal to AV. Good choice for top staffer.

"Tofu girlĀ said.....This is not a match for control of the Valley. Their world is limited to the East Valley. That's hardly the Valley. I say this is a fight among Latinos for control of the EAST VALLEY."
You keep thinking that. AV took CD3 by 7-8 pts, so you better believe either of those two political operations will have their hands in there in 2009. A Latino can win that seat.

Alarcon has as much chance of being Speaker as he did of being Mayor.
Fabian is entrenched there for the duration. If Alarcon tries to edge him, he will be chewed up and spit out.
Alarcon only knows his supporters when he is running for office; immediately after he is elected, he blanks out when he meets them.
He is arrogant and standoffish. He was lucky to be elected to the Senate, and he is in for rough sledding in the Assembly where he will be one of 80 instead of one of forty, 27 of whom control the house.
His career is almost over.
You heard it here first.

In 4 yrs. that will be a Latino seat, whether Canoga Park slash West Hills slash Winnetka slash Warner Center likes it or not. Keep your eyes peeled.

What Tofu Girl is talking about is Latino yuppies, and yes, there are more and more in the Valley.
