Our Great State

So today one of our state constitutional officers Steve Westly will speak to the Los Angeles County Young Democrats. Reading about this news made me think about the campaigns coming up for 2006 and give my predictions for victory.

Chief Parker's crystal ball.

State Treasurer

Democratic Nominee - Bill Lockyer - his entrance into the race virtually cleared the deck for him and his $10 million dollar war chest. Joe Dunn, John Chiang and other have fled the hills for greener pastures.

Republican Nominee -- Keith Richman -- Well I support assemblymember Richman he may have a tough battle against Bill Simon the 2002 nominee for governor. Will Bill Simon's high name ID crush the lonely San Fernando Valley Assemblyman (Valley Mayor)? Or will Keith be able to beat down Bill Simon who has a penchant for running some of the most ill-advised technical campaigns in California.

Attorney General

Democratic Nominee -- Rocky Delgadillo -- Our tough as nails LA City Attorney will have the battle of his life against "Moonbeam" Jerry Brown. Questions will be raised regarding Rocky's past with his All-American affiliation, while Jerry Brown will be questioned about his loyalty to the democratic party.

Republican Nominee - Rod Pacheco -- While Sen. Pachoogian is well respected in the central valley his coalition is struggling to get the statewide support he needs. Many Republicans including Pete Wilson support Rod Pacheco, the first latino republican assemblyman. The republicans still looking to heal their relationship with Latino's may want to nominate Rod so that they can blunt the support that a Rocky candidacy will garner from that community.

California Governor

Democratic Nominee - Unknown at this time. With the field of candidates changing everyweek it's hard to make any prediction just yet. But here is what I know.

Phil Angelides the presumed frontrunner as of today has his very young daughters campaigning for him all over the state. Perhaps he's trying to capture that elusive "i love girls under 18" guy vote. Note to Phil: Please do not suffer from the Hertzberg syndrome by paying your staff too much money -- keep your admin costs down!

Steve Westly the presumed rich kid in the race recently dumped $10 million dollars into his campaign coffers. Rumors have it that he will ultimately go as high as $25 million -- with his E-bay money there is no stopping his campaign gravy train. Note to Steve: Get angry, get mad, show some emotion and stop looking like a candidate who just read "How to be a Candidate for Dummies."

Other notables -- Jack O' Connell has expressed interest in the race to go as far as call up some top notch consultants, but it looks like he is betting on a Schwarzenegger victory and in a holding pattern til 2010. Rob Reiner has expressed his willingness to entertain the idea but he seems bent on driving every rich person out of the state with his preschool initiative. Warren Beatty - does his leading role in the movie "Reds" hurt him? We know Bill Carrick is looking for a candidate now that Bill Lockyer went running to the safe spot of treasurer.

Republican Nominee -- It's the Terminators if he wishes to have it. His ego may get in the way of his brain -- with low poll numbers Arnold may just fight the fight just so he can leave California a success and not a blunder.

That's it for now tinhorns - blog away!

Are any of these high school drop outs?

LA mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, a high school dropout

Villaraigosa, who once had a "Born to Raise Hell" tattoo, will become the first Hispanic mayor of Los Angeles since 1872 when the city was a dusty outpost of only 5,000 residents.

Dowie indicted in federal court *
City News Service has moved an urgent advisory, saying that Doug Dowie, the former head of Fleishman-Hillard public relations in Los Angeles, has been charged with conspiracy and fraud. The story is developing (and this post is being updated frequently)...

* Updates: It's a superseding indictment to the earlier charges against Dowie's former deputy at Fleishman, John Stodder. I now have the indictment in hand; more as I read it...The new charges relate to Fleishman-Hillard's contracts with the Department of Water and Power, the Port of Los Angeles, Gehry Partners and the Worldwide Church of God.

In count one, Dowie and Stodder are charged with conspiring with unnamed, unindicted co-conspirators to falsify PR billings to the DWP, port, Gehry and the church. In one example, the indictment says, when Stodder proposed padding the hours charged to the DWP, Dowie emailed "OK, let's do it."

Counts two through sixteen allege interstate wire fraud by Dowie or Dowie and Stodder, in the transmission of false billings between Fleishman headquarters in St. Louis and (I think) the clients in Los Angeles. The indictments come out of the federal side of the task force investigating Fleishman and corruption in City Hall, and are signed by U.S. Attorney Debra Wong Yang; Stephen D. Clymer, chief of the criminal division; and Adam D. Kamenstein, head of the public corruption and government fraud section.

Dowie is expected to surrender to federal custory on Friday and appear in court in the afternoon. The conspiracy charge carries a possible five-year prison sentence. Each count of wire fraud could bring twenty years [Did I read that right? Yes.].

The grand jury alleges that the DWP overbillings total more than $300,000. The indictment reports a January 2003 discussion where Dowie suggests padding a DWP bill by $30,000, and Stodder responds that amount was "more than the system could bear." So they reduced the false charges to help them get through.

Doug Dowie was the head of Fleishman-Hillard's office in Los Angeles and a close confidante of Mayor Jim Hahn. He also is the former managing editor of the Daily News. Here is my Los Angeles magazine story on Dowie from January 2004.

Amazing that both the LA Times and Daily News failed to report all the facts and covered up all the negative stories on Antonio during the mayoral election. I'm glad both papers are going under and have lost thousands of readers.
