Does the Times Have it in for Hertzberg?*

HertzbergWhat did Hertzberg do to piss off the LA Times?

Last week the Times ran an editorial slamming his LAUSD break-up proposal, where according to his aides, they didn't bother to contact him or even get their facts straight. The Times has since printed an editorial by Howard Blume which attempts to give a different viewpoint of the proposal, but doesn't come close. There have been no letters to the editor posted from their vantage point even though it would be hard to imagine that their campaign didn't ask supporters to send them in.

Then Monday rolls along and the Inside Politics column completely botches their coverage of his ad spat with Martini Republic over where and when they advertise (NOTE THEY NEVER ADVERTISED HERE). Boi from Troy rushes to their defense, along with their staffer Brian Hay both on Boi's site and on The Interocitor.

Hertzberg's folks have managed a subtle dig by posting stories from Take Back the Times in their Daily Digest, but not much else out of them.

For someone who isn't polling well, they sure are drawing fire from many angles.

You asked for the post about his ads and his LAUSD plan, so here you go. Any bets on how long we go before someone slams Tony?

*UPDATE - Hertzberg has added a Q&A section on his site with more details of his plan and the LA Times has printed letters to the editors regarding many of their education stories. It is also noted that their Daily Digest contains two more LA Times bashing posts from fellow bloggers.

You would think with Bob's campaign people that are working for him someone would have been a little more aggressive with the media crisis on this type of press. Staying quiet is not the answer.

The Times has it in for anybody who doesn't spell their name V.I.L.L.A.R.A.I.G.O.S.A.

Yeh, what's with the Times. The biggest story in the mayor's race is Villaraigosa's recall. I hear it all the time on the radio and not ONE WORD in the L.A. Times.

Kinda feel sorry for Huggy. The last week he's been slammed quite a bit. Why hasn't the damn LA Times done a story on Tony's recall by going out to the community and hearing what they say and think? The opinion piece on Huggy's school issue was surprising especially in the editorial piece. Why hasn't he come out to defend himself?

Chief - to answer your question, two posts. I think Hertzberg has a right to post his ads any damn place he wants. As long as he posts some on the Sister City, I don't give a rat's behind.

From MEATEATER:

I have a lot of respect for Bob Hertzberg, but can I just say how refreshing it is to have the LA Times actually take a position and stick to it. I think they are right--Hertzberg is too smart to have his proposals and soundbites all seem like gimmicks. He is the smartest guy in the race but is coming across as the phoniest one so far. I think it is inexperience (he has never had a contested race where he had to really debate and compete) in this level. He needs to be himself a little more and not be so nervous.

I'm for breaking up the school district, but the way in which he has been talking about it seems, frankly, a little phony.

You've got people rooting for you, Bob. C'mon!

I don't understand the LA Times. They did that nice story on Bob's bus tour then all of a sudden they attack his school idea. Although I didn't agree with his issue interesting that they would blast it out of the blue.

Who is that Hertzberg hugging in the photo? It looks like longtime Alarcon stooge Manny Figueras. Now THAT would be interesting!

Yeah let's keep the discussion on Bob Hertzberg....not Villaraigosa. It must be some political operatives posting here or the few people behind the recall. Anyways...

Hertzberg's school plan deserves merit. Unfortunately, the mayor cannot implement such a radical plan on his own. We need leaders to stand up to the powerful bureuacracy in Downtown LA that thumbs its nose at the rest of us when change is needed.

It is good to hear Hertzberg has a plan, but almost every elected official has had a plan for LAUSD. Who can really make change? It's gonna take a coaltion of local, state and federal leaders to push forward the needed reforms.

As we know the mayor can work with after school programs which are important in keeping kids off the street. We need to expand those efforts. But most importantly we need to modernize and better manage our schools and the curriculum. The question begs: Where is the leadership on this issue?

Gee that should upset Tony because from what I've heard he has a lot of farmworkers in the Northeast area going into the schools and elsewhere campaigning for him.

FROM MEAT:

LA Times blasting Hertzberg was a bit odd, Mr Hertzberg has refreshing ideas that need to be debated, not discarded so quickly. We as a city and region need to give some of these ideas the consideration they deserve.

As for CD14Lover -- dude -- happy you love the district, i do too, but you ask questions that should be asked to the candidates themselves, not a blog.

I think your questions have merit, but the type of specificity you desire is not something that bolds well for campaigns, thats not what they are designed to do unfortunately. I've been vacationing, so i will do my homework on your previous blogs and try to give an honest answer to each one of your queries, as i always do. I can't say that much for the rest of the hacks here.

blog away.
