Wednesday's Open Thread and First Round of Election Results

The Official Mayor Sam Election Night Party Tour has concluded for this evening and I'll have more later Wednesday but here are a few thoughts for now:

Big Winner of the Night: Jose Huizar. Biggest CD14 ass whooping in 8 years.

Biggest Loser: Michael Trujillo, Campaign Manager of Tamar Galatzan's campaign. He had a near $1 million budget to elect a political unknown to a seat that earns less than half the pay of a McDonald's store manager. Our former Sister City blogger now finds his candidate in a run-off, having spent about $85 a vote to get about 42% of the vote versus Louis Pugliese who spent $1.50 a vote to clear nearly 17% (based on the current vote count). Man that's got to hurt!

No Big Surprise: LA not the only city to return Clowncil members to office. San Fernando jumped the shark too tonight.

Best Election Party: Louis Pugliese. As Zuma would say Louie had "most excellent free food" though this old, dead Republican mayor only looked and did not touch. An awesome collection of very friendly boho NoHo intellectual, artistic and political types in the audience including a guy who said the blog needs to promote the Green Party more. Okay.

Most Excellent Free Liquor: CD7 Candidate Monica Rodriguez's party at Mission Hills legendary hang El Presidente. Cadillac Margarita on the rocks with a sidecar shot of Grand Mariner.

Hottest Young People: Again, Monica Rodriguez. If you are young and single this was the place to pick up. Of course their leader Monica is about the coolest Council candidate I've ever met. It would be good to have a young person like her on the Clowncil. C'mon David Hernandez, you got to hit a home run on your Measure R appeal.

Biggest Surprise: The impressive showing of Eric Rothenay in CD6.

Most Pleasant Surprise: Former Sheriff's Deputy, Vietnam Vet, college professor and Republican candidate Roy Burns apparently pushing LACCD Trustee Georgia Mercer into a run-off. Woo hoo!

Biggest Disappointment: Measure L winning.

Biggest Mass Boo in Unison: When Mayor Villaraigosa's face flashed on television screens at the Monica Rodriguez party.

Funniest Election Night Blogging: Walter Moore blogging updates from a repeat episode of Law and Order: Criminal Intent.

Worst Parking: Louis Pugliese's party. Sorry Louis. Zuma may be right - we need more infrastructure!

Whitest Guy Leaving an Election Party: Jim Alger driving off from Jamie Corardo's party at the Knights of Columbus Hall blaring David Bowie's and Queen's Under Suspicion from his car speakers.

D'Oh, Mayor Samuel . . . guess again! Even though Alvin just proved himself to be CD14's biggest ass (once again), and BOY did he get whooped -- you're WAY off on your elapsed time.

Eight years ago, 1999, was nearly a squeaker with Pacheco beating Griego by just 51 to 49 after they were forced into a June runoff out of a posse of 14 primary candidates.

And since Alvin bragged all during this run-up that he got 42 percent in '95 again incumbent Alatorre, that means you would have to go back at least 16 years, maybe more.

(That's just off the top of my helmet-encased head, of course).

But thanks to low turnout, Juan "Johnny Jay" was able to more than double his percentage to almost 5.

If he keeps at this, he can become CD14's councilmember the same year The Today Show announces his 100th birthday.

Zuma, Zuma, Zuma boy did you learn a lot about CD14 politics. I hope you learned who NOT to talk with and too bad you got stirred in the wrong direction. You ranted and raved what a great guy you thought Alvin was and how Jose was losing support. WRONG. All that ranting made people who weren't going to vote for Jose turn around and vote for him. The dirty mudslinging backfired and you got caught up it in. Now people know you aligned yourself with a crook, coward and scumbag Alvin.

Zuma, you are a 100% loser in every election you stuck your unwashed nose into.

Have you considered getting an honest job, instead of mucking around in stuff you know little, if nothing about?

Stay out of CD 14. We know what works and what doesn't and the only work you are Parra are fit for is busboy.

Parra and Cordero can now join the 3 Minute Losers Club, of which you are clearly President and CEO. Lauritzen is next to join.

Michael Trujillo is a loser? Is it any wonder you guys can't handicap elections?

When an incumbent is forced into a run-off, there is a message; the majority of the people do not want you back.

Now, when the incumbent is in a run off and runs second, the message is even stronger.

Just ask Jimmy Hahn.

Lauritzen is history and Michael will have the winner.

And ZD and MSY will be sucking hind teat once again.

But, then again, you guys are used to losing. Have you EVER had a winner?

Number of votes the winning candidates received in contested race:

District 6 - 3,488
District 7 - 3,695
District 14 - 6,353

Doesn't it take more votes to get elected to UCLA's undergraduate student council? And how much money was spent per vote? Will someone do that calculation for me? Uh, no offense,, but maybe not you, Councilman John. Someone else?

Zuma's the most clueless here about CD14, but there isn't a named poster on this blog who knows dick about the Eastside.

(The pirate is just a total fake who hides intense ignorance behind gibberish prose). I repeat what I said before about that -- ZERO predictions, hints, or garbled clues from HIS poop deck have proved correct.

At least Mayor Sam knows not to take the ranting of a few slime-leakers into his e-mail box as the "pulse" of the district, and just reasons out where he's going to "endorse" (however silly that concept is). And, a few others just stayed out of the game - also wise. CD14 is universes away from the Valley, westside, etc. You can't crfuise through and attend one local meeting and hope to grasp the differences.

OH, and ZD, if people "held their nose" and voted for Huizar, the stench was coming from Parra. you don't have to be a genius to tell a real concerned candidate from a conniving passed-over disgruntled ex-employee.

I AM NOT SURE WHEN ALL THE BALLOTS WILL FINALLY BE VERIFIED, BUT THERE ARE SOME UNDISPUTED FACTS. CANDIDATE PARRA AND SOME OF HIS STRONGEST SUPPORTERS LIVE IN MY AREA, WHERE VOTING WAS TAKING PLACE. (OBVIOUSLY, IM MY PRECINCT.)

I FELT THAT IF I COULD ENCOURAGE THE RESIDENTS OF ROSE HILLS TO GET OUT AND VOTE BY FOLLOWING MY RECOMENDATION ALVIN WOULD HAVE LITTLE IMPACT EVEN IN HIS OWN PRECINCT. THIS IS OUR COMMUNITY AND IT LOOKS LIKE THE COMMUNITY UNITED WITH ME TO REDUCE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF ALVIN IN HIS OWN NEIGHBORHOOD. COUNTING THE NUMBERS IS VERY IMPORTANT, I THINK THEY SHOW THAT ABOUT 11%-12% WAS THE TURN OUT IN ROSE HILLS.

IF IT MEANS ANYTHING ABOUT MY SUPPORT AND COMMUNITY RECOGNITION, IT IS THAT I HAVE STRONGER RESPONSE AND UNITY WIH THE NEIGHBORS THAN ALVIN IN THE VERY PLACE WE CALL HOME. THIS IS THE REVIEW STRAIGHT FROM PRECINCT 0243A.

I AM NOT HERE TO INSTIGATE ANY ABUSE OR CONFLICT, JUST GIVING CLARITY TO THE OVERWHELMING WAVE OF SUPPORT WHERE THE CANDIDATE HAD HIS STRONGEST OPPORTUNITY TO FLOURISH. THE COMMUNITY OF ROSE HILLS KNOWS WHO TO ASSIST AND THAT IS THE PERSON THAT ASSISTS THEM WHEN THE TIME IS NEEDED. (RHR)

Good morning 7:30am (removes hat and extends finger):

My, my, my, aren't we full of ourself this morning? Again, I did not make any prediction regarding the outcome of last evening's election, no foo on me!

Second, IF Don Jose was such a sterling candidate, why didn't throngs of people come out to vote for him? Where were the massive crowds? The more than 10K voters? Out of all the registered voters in the CQ, how come Don Jose got only 6K plus votes? And before you start slinging arrows back in my direction, I would remind you that the Republican candidate for State Assembly got way more votes than Don Jose...such a sterling, powerful, wonderful candidate he was. 'Tis a sad day when your knight in shining armour gets a shabby 6K votes, savvy? Out of HOW MANY registered voters in the district? Yes, that's certainly something to crow about.

Ah yes, with such a wonderful candidate, more people stayed home than you have brain cells as they did not care for your candidate or any candidate for that matter. But then again this is just my opinion, and the last time I checked it was kosher to have an opinion different than yours. So sod off, savvy?

(laughs) Ass whupping at 6K votes? I would wager to say that its the other 'way round. How many registered voters were there? 22K? 220K? And Don Jose only got 6K? The silent majority washes its hands of Don Jose. And no matter how you explain it, justify it or dress it up and parade it around the town square, Don Jose STILL only got 6K votes.

As for my prose, it's obvious that your vocabulary consists of words that are at tops two syllables and that words like coprolite or cynosure (of which you must surely wish to be) are beyond you.

Nope, what Huizar got was 4 more years. which will likely lead to at least 8, and quite possibly 12 in all. Period. That's what the election was about.

Future challengers will take note of the one-sided results, and stay home for the next 8 or so.

But, they obviously serve a lot of sour grapes in the prose-choked pirate's fetid galley. Actual "prediction" or no, his veiled (garbled) postings tried to make it sound like there was trouble for Huizar in CD14. Nearly two-thirds of the vote is trouble? Give all my candidates that kind of trouble, please!

Low turnout's no evidence of trouble and unhappiness. High turnout, with a less embarrasing showing for the two misfits that ran against him would have been some evidence.

No one in CD14 that knew squat ever considered Huizar in any trouble. No need to even break a sweat on this one. It was always perceived as a slam dunk - and it was, the worst defeat for a challenger in the district in two decades or more.

Game could have been called at halftime.

It's good to see that his ship can back peddle so easily, however. That must come in very handy when powered by such ignorant, misguided politican buffoons.

You know, the pirate has a point. Only 6,000 is pretty lame regardless of whether or not Huizar got 4 more years. What Huizar got was 4 more years of not having his constituents take him seriously. I would consider that to be a worse defeat. Now if Huizar got 4 years and 16,000 votes, then your gloating would hold water.

Hey Cap'n Jack, thanks for pointing out that Huizar only got 6, 000 votes out of the 25,000 or so registered voters. What a pathetic win!

9:59 - If you think about Cordaro, he was stupid to throw in the "Jamie" as his name for the ballot. If you look at it fast it looks like Jaime. And any anti-latino vote will skip right by him. In the end it didn't really matter, but he could have had a little better showing maybe getting nearly 600 votes.

It wouldn't have mattered Cordaro was dead from second 1, because the guy automatically inserts his foot everytime he opens his mouth. But the Jamie thing didn't help him with white voters.

So Huizar got 20,000 votes just 18 months ago for the same seat against a more crowded field, and probably 6,500 this time when everything is finally counted.

Let's average it out and call it 13,000+ each time -- Happy?

He also got the highest number of votes of any councilmember in a contested race this time (after having served the least amount of time of any of them). Factor in that the larger half of his district (the part that overlaps with his old LAUSD seat) didn't even have a board seat in play this time.

Then also deal with the fact that no challenger of any incumbent raised more than Parra did, with which to assault Huizar.

Huizar's closest opponent last time got nearly 10,000 and this time Parra got way less than 3,000.

Of any of the incumbents this time, Huizar has by far the most right to crow about being returned - especially after being hit with all of Parra's lying slime.

So, to recap, in case you lost track -- it's 4 years now, and there's absolutely not one ounce of indication his district is unhappy with him, other than the spin from the sour grapes wannabes he just wasted publicly.
