Los Angeles Politics Hotsheet for Friday

-The "I meant to grab my Taser, but pulled out my gun and shot him in the back by accident" defense from former BART cop, Johannes Mehserle, didn't completely fly with the LA jury who found him guilty on Thursday of involuntary manslaughter. Family members and supporters of victim Oscar Grant are outraged that Mehserle wasn't found guilty of murder instead, and the streets of Oakland are feeling the pain.

-Fresh from basking in his and Richard Alarcon's victory of severely damaging Open Space Zoning in Los Angeles, Mayor Villaraigosa contradicts his actions by laying it on thick at the Huffington Post and begs us all to save Open Space. WTF?

-Speaking of Lopez Canyon and Richard Alarcon's obsessive pet project truck driving school, reliable sources are reporting that the Community Alliance for Open Space has found the funding, and a lawsuit will definitely be filed to stop this degradation of designated Open Space. No word yet on how many of Alarcon's staff will be called to testify.

-Gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown picked up the support of a Who's Who of Latino leaders at Cal State LA yesterday. The running joke at the event? "The ground shaking on Wednesday, that wasn't an earthquake, Meg Whitman just dropped her wallet".

-A federal judge in Boston rightfully rules that the federal ban on gay marriage is unconstitutional. Brace yourself for Mormons going ballistic. What does this mean for Prop 8 opponents?

-And finally, Arizona,"The Embarrassment State", is more than likely to see the pandering and misguided SB1070 law shot down once this terribly written piece of legislation undergoes judicial scrutiny. Oh no! Now what will KFI's John & Ken Show do for ratings?

The Mayor is for open space if the price is right... change is in the air he says, but the dollars lining his , and AlarCON's, pocket are ultimate motivators.

Whitman is spending her own money on her campaign. I want Jerry Brown to tell me why that's such a bad thing when other politicians, like himself, get huge sums from special interest groups (public employee unions for example) and are beholden to them instead of to the voters.

Logic would tell me that if one is beholden to no one, and one is beholden to entities that rape public finances, to go with the loner, the one spending her own money.

A very funny comment by a political advisor for Whitman said that the Latino backers for Jerry Brown only have 9% favor rate in Sacramento. Add to that the losers like Huizar and Garcetti who were also there knowing there is an Anti incumbent backlash here in LA. Were Garcetti and Huizar at this press conference during work hours on city time with their staffers? This is something that needs to be put out to the public. Latinos make up only 16% of vote and there is 84% are others. To keep on focusing on Latino vote is going to put the nail in Brown's coffin., People are fed up with the Latino bullshit because many here in CA support Arizona. And yes I'm a Latino.

Anonymous, 6:48am, I agree that people are fed up. Many Latinos like ourselves believe that the ILLEGALS should follow the rules and immigrate by legal channels instead of breaking and entering into our state. Isn't this like home invasion on a national level and Homeland Security should be more interested in stopping the invaders instead of punishing those that want to stop the infiltrators?

Garcetti, Huizar, AlarCON & the other council people need to be removed from office for promoting illegal actions against the U.S. Aiding and abetting criminals are still punishable offenses and yet they espouse a "don't ask, don't tell" policy on this issue while offering rewards for providing law enforcement tips on other crimes.

About Jerry Brown, didn't he put us near bankruptcy once before? Now he want to govern again? Didn't we learn something from the first Brown fiasco?

I demanded that Alarcon resign!

I also demanded to be Mayor, Congressman, and leader of the Recall.

What the hell is wrong with me that nothing I demand ever happens? I really enjoy demanding things because it makes me "semi-known," but I am tired of coming in last place and predicting everything wrong, like who would win the cd2 race. Waaaaaaaaaaaaah! I want to be right! I wanna be Mayor! I wanna be in Congress! I wanna recall the Mayor!

So what if I don't want to put in the effort? Doesn't my simply wanting something make it happen?

Hey Joe B. "The I grabed the wrong weapon defense didn't completely fly with the LA jury?

Really? They convicted him of the least of the charges, and he will probably not go to prison and be sentenced to time served.

The thugs in Oakland are rioting a la Rodney King - with the worthless piece of dead ghetto trash being treated like some kinda civil rights hero.

In the meantime, let's see if the LA Judge has the guts to do the right thing and set aside the jury's verdict. The cop was guilty of nothing but being the victim of an asshole with a fat mouth and attitude. OK, he did not need to die, but he sure as hell did everything he could to cause a situation where he ended up dead.

It's time to get serious about the Oakland experiment. Letting that community flounder with welfare checks and stimulus bailout scams is robbing that community of any chance of progress. Just look at the bunch of hands out types there. It's not fair, they need to learn how to fend for themselves, and rely on on government cheese. Oakland, you need to grow up and get a life.

9:03am, that is just about the funniest and truest comment I ever read here.

It's true. Phil gets up like a child at city hall and demands that alarcon resign. No, he wants to be mayor. No, he wants to be in Congress. Right after he "smashes evil" and swings & misses on the recall. Beautifully stated!

That smash evil line is right out of the 5th grade, where Phil's maturity level seems to be. Trying to live that poker lifestyle is also reminiscent of someone who doesn't want to work for a living. It all makes sense now.

Did you know that someone outed them on their blog but the comment was deleted?

The name was someone who was indeed a former Mayor Sam blogger and SFVYD member.

What is the "smash evil" comment by Phil? I must have missed that. Anybody have it? It sounds typically juvenile of Phil.

Here's one for Red Spot and the 4 candidates running against Huizar. Why is the CRA moving funds to his LA Street car project 10-0937. Over 200 city employees have lost their jobs and the city is in a financial crisis but Huizar wants a stupid street car for his developer friends in downtown LA. This has to be illegal to use these funds. Huizar wants CRA to give the MTA who has a $3 BILLION DOLLAR BUDGET money to help with his project.

Ok Joe.....Murder??? Nope, facts not in evidence....was there premeditation? NO. Was there intent? NO. Without those 2, you cannot convict for murder. The judge was right to give the jury options of manslaughter. The hysterical morons calling for a murder conviction only, would have been more pissed, since the jury would have had no other option but acquittal. Learn the law before you make asinine emotional comments!!

Joe B can you please tutor Red Spot on how to post something that isn't 3000 words long?

It's impossible to scroll past his poorly articulated notions to get to a post that he shouldn't have bottlecapped.

Go see how long the post is above this one.

He supports the gays trampling on everyone else's right to have their own religiously-based definition of marriage.
Nope.

Joe B says all conservatives are wrong and they have to listen to Joe B and do as he says.
Because he says so.

Freedom Hating Liberal.

Phil,
Aren't you the freedom hating liberal by wanting the government to tell gays whether they can marry or not?
It isn't about religion; it's about the acquisition of a license at a government building.
