Los Angeles Politics Hotsheet for Thursday

Lookin' good baby, lookin' real good!

Animal welfare supporters recently got an email blast from CD2 Candidate Chris Essel where she praises herself as an animal lover and supporter.  The piece even goes as far as to show Essel walking a dog at Lake Balboa (yea right people who live in Doheny Estates in CD5 go to Van Nuys to walk their dog).  The rub however, from animal rights workers we spoke to, is that Essel has no demonstrated record of advocacy on animal issues. On the other hand her opponent Paul Krekorian was endorsed by The League of Humane voters for actual legislative work on behalf of animals.

Mayoral cousin and freshman Assemblyman John Perez is on his way to becoming California's first openly gay Speaker of the Assembly. Of course we told you this would happen.  Though Assemblyman Kevin DeLeon thinks he still has a shot its pretty much all she wrote for Perez as outgoing Speaker Karen Bass has officially annointed the Villaraigosa primo.

Speaking of the Perez ascendancy tongues are wagging in Democratic circles that "One Bill" State Senator Gil Cedillo, soon to be termed out, is considering running against Perez in the primary whether Perez is Speaker or not.  The effect of this, some insiders say, is that Perez will have to divert campaign funds to his own effort that would otherwise go towards competitive races in other district and open up the chance for Republican gains in the Assembly, or at least put to rest Perez's plans for a liberal supermajority.  Go Gil!

Government services are being cut back and the King-Drew Medical Center had to close but that doesn't mean Mark "Curly" Ridley-Thomas doesn't get to rennovate his office.  The County Supervisor spent $700K of your tax dollars to re-decorate his downtown office.  Ridley-Thomas justified the move by saying "We deserve to have a decent environment." I am sure Betty Pleasant will blame this on Bernard Parks.

Found a fun new blog called "Mayor Villaraigosa Publicity Whore" with a whole set of fun pictures featuring the Mayor in his 89% time.  The photo at the top of the post is from the blog too.  Keep up the good work!

Animal welfare supporters?

Hell, I got that spam, and I hate the mangy mutts. I think they ought to be a food source.

And, I live about as far from CD2 as you can get.

Who's managing her outreach, some first-year CSUN PoliSci student?

I was offended by the email from Christine Essel because it does not demonstrate what she has accomplished for the animals.

Has she spearheaded a spay/neuter program?

Has she led any animal related legislation?

Has she lobbied City Council for any animal related issue?

I didn't see her in City Council to speak up about Billy the Elephant.

I agree with Mike Higby that someone who lives off of Sunset Blvd. does not go to Lake Balboa in order to walk their dogs.

This looks like a pure photo opportunity and a pathetic play to curl up next to the humane community without being able to show any substance or accomplishment.

I don't live in District 2 either, but I'd like to know what, if anything, she has accomplished on this front.

Thanks for bringing this to light.

Why is the LA Slimes kissing butt to BECK the Tainted Chief and holding another stupid meeting? BECK has already been all over the city and we're sick of him already. Send a question and ask him how can he start his tenure already corrupted cause we all know the selection process was FIXED??

Phil made a snide remark on the his Essel Birthday blog that Ron Kaye is still sulking about Measure B. Is Phil such a partisan simpleton that Krekorian being a Democrat is worse then the corrupt union boss Brian DArcy's attempt to swindle billions out of LA taxpayers?

I didn't know that Phil J was in favor of Measure B. Chris Essel was. I also don't know why Ron would sulk when he won?

Everyone should Google Essel and see if you can find out where she has done volunteer work of any kind as a private citizen anywhere in this city. I have not been able to find any reference to her Hollywood Terrace Homeowners Assoc. any place. I did find one site that listed all her donations to a Woman's Political Organization while at Paramount, but, she's not political, remember?

Why are the unions and developers throwing millions of dollars to get her elected to the "horseshoe" What are they after. I am sure something big and she is going to help them get it. Do you get the picture?

Wendy Greuel is going along with Essel's shenanigans and probably coaching her along the way. She could care less about Council District Two. Don't bother to run for Mayor Wendy, because many of us will no longer vote for you. We don't want you for our "Rate Payer Advocate" either.
More likely than not, your are in bed with D'Arcy too and you are no longer a trusted community member.

By the way, since Greuel left office in mid-term, shouldn't Greuel have to pay for this special election since she left Council District 2 high and dry. Essel wants Krekorian to pay for the Assembly election, if he should win the seat, but not a word about Greuel when Essel was asked if Greuel should pay.

Are these the kind of double standards we can look forward to if Essel wins? She's a "Don't do as I do, only as I say" kinda gal!

Everything you need to know about Chris Essel (tell your friends):

1. She supported SB1818 and crowed about it to Downtown interests.
2. She supports mandatory financial disclosure for Neighborhood Council members including credit checks and criminal background checks (Greig Smith plan)
3. She supported Measure B.

Yea Paul Krekorian is a big old liberal and he's going to be on the side of some issues that make me gag (like passing proclamations in support of Obama) but unlike Essel he has a record of performance and caring for the community. At least he walks the talk.

The painters are doing a big Latino push for Essel this weekend.

It will be run out of their Pasadena office, and they have hired ACORN canvassers.

They are having them start late so the ACORN issue cant be used against Chris.

They have people coming down on buses from the Bay Area on Friday.

They are going to be crashing at the UFW hall in East LA.

Residents smell foul odor in San Fernando Valley

Several residents in the north San Fernando Valley sniffed a strange odor in the air this morning and called 911 to report it, authorities said.

"They didn't describe what it smelled like, fortunately," said Rich Matheney, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Matheney said firefighters determined the odor was not dangerous and no evacuations were necessary. He said Southern California Gas Co. was on scene trying to determine the cause of the odor.

Fact-checking Higby's Mayor Sam.

I was one of the STRONGEST opponents of Measure B. I called it "organized crime" by the Mayor and the IBEW, both in my L.A. Times interview and in my NBC 4 interview.

My e-mail blast to 60,000 registered voters may have helped with the defeat of Measure B - which went down to defeat by the very small margin of about 1100 votes.

Villaraigosa's enormous ego and refusal to campaign or debate the other candidates helped deflate interest in the March 09 election, and the low turnout helped cost his greedy friends at IBEW a few billion in taxpayer money.

Get a clue brother! You and [name omitted] lose all credibility endorsing Essel the special interest puppet.

Higby,

I'm not slamming Ron Kaye. I like the guy a lot. He is a big unelected figure in this City.
But his hatred for DWP and IBEW is clouding his vision in this case.

Yes, the DWP is ripping off taxpayers and the IBEW is incredibly greedy. So what?
How do you change that?
Sometimes you have to play the hand you have been dealt.

I support Essel because she is a pro-business moderate who is much less destructive than the Socialist ideologies of Paul Krekorian.

The fact that others are supporting her does not change or affect my choice.

By the way...tell your boy Paul it is not personal. If he is willing to renounce Socialism and abandon the Democratic Party, and join the GOP and become a true Conservative and only vote for Conservative policies, then I will be happy to switch my endorsement and support him in this CD 2 election.

Phil @1:15, I have it on good authority that even as I write this, in order to get YOUR endorsement by this Tuesday, Krekorian gave orders to Hacopian to, as you instruct:

"renounce Socialism, abandon the Democratic party, join the GOP, and vote only for conservative positions and principles" and all the rest.

Your endorsement is THAT important.

But Pbil, why hasn't your girl Essel done the same? Why did your Nooch Cooley's Pooch, in fact do the OPPOSITE and renounce the GOP to claim "declined to state" in that cowardly way, even going so far as to deny he WAS until very, very recently a Republican and a darn "conservative" one, too? Isn't that a little chicken-shit?

And add to that, Cooley did the same thing and on HIS last election against some poor Deputy DA who was elected head of their Union to try to unite against his vindictiveness, Cooley FILED SUIT against the poor slob BECAUSE HE OUTED HIM AS A REPUBLICAN, which COOLEY ARGUED IN COURT IS LIKE CALLING SOMEONE A NAZI IN GERMANY.

(The whole Dep. DA's union now has a suit against YOUR role model DA Steve Cooley for harassment, intimidation, inflicting intentional humiliation, demotion etc. etc. to bust their union.)

PHIL CAN YOU ANSWER THAT? Another dumb contradiction, huh, Phil?

(BUT don't worry, Paul and Hacopian are turning proud GOP!)

About her behind-scenes cobbling together votes for Perez for weeks, without ever talking to de Leon but accusing him of too aggressive lobbying for the job. Working with AB1818 Fuentes against him. The promise by Perez to let her stay in office for almost an extra year vs. de Leon who'd want the job now adds up. Article says she announced Perez has the numbers to win by "using the media as a weapon," making the announcement before polling to the Democratic Caucus which upsets some members.

The poll by Cedillo showing him way ahead is true, but shows name recognition as of now, anything can change. Nasty all around.
