And Then There Were 14
John T. Walker has withdrawn from the race for CD2 to replace Wendy Greuel. This takes us down to 14 potential candidates in a amazingly crowded field. Here is the letter he sent out explaining his reasons for withdrawing and what he hopes to see from the next CD2 representative.
Dear Friends and Fellow Stakeholders:
I have spent these past few weeks, exploring the (real) possibilities of entering this City Council race. I’ve had the experience of being able to speak with most, if not all of our community leaders. To sit down with several of our elected officials and a number of business owners. In fact, I got calls and emails from people I did not know at all and they all urged me to run – with the same mantra. “YOU CAN WIN”!
The magnitude of calls and emails has been both astounding and humbling to me. I just never had any idea that my community thought of me in this way. It’s a remarkable feeling and extremely rewarding on a very personal level.
Now, having said that, I think this job must include a (real) passion, desire and the potential to commit, to over 13 years to an office. You cannot work 16 hour days, 6-7 days per week without those qualities or you will not be effective and you would be doing an injustice to those who put you if office.
I’ve made many new friends and political allies. I’ve listened to those that I have been with. I’ve heard the issues from different perspectives – from the homeowner, to the retiree. The young couple just getting started and the small business owner and not surprisingly, all the issues start off singularly, but they eventually all end up in the same funnel and come out with the same purpose:
(1) FIX OUR INFRASTRUCTURE, (2) EMPOWERMENT TO THE
PEOPLE, (3) MANDATE MITIGATIONS BEFORE ANY DEVELOPMENT IS ALLOWED, (4) BE IN CONTROL OF OUR MONEY and finally (5) A LINE OF RESPONSIBILITY – WHERE DOES THE BUCK STOP – WHO IS RESPONSIBLE – WHO IS IDENTIFIABLE?
One of my goals if elected was to have established a CD2 SWITCHBOARD. This would allow callers to speak to a live person, ask a question, ask for assistance, file a complaint – something that would give each of us in our community the right to immediate access to our representatives. Those calls would have been put together in my office and given to me on a prioritized list. Part of my everyday process would have been to (personally) make two return calls myself, daily and to also have daily briefings where that LIST of callers is part of what would become my COMMUNITY MORNING AGENDA and assign representatives to respond to all callers and then, report back to me. Working with our local colleges, and offering internships in exchange for credits would have covered the staffing issues. I would still like to implement this plan and hope that our next CD2 representative understands the importance of involvement.
I have found that for all of us, not feeling like we are part of the system makes most of us step away and not want to get involved! That does not make for a stronger community. It’s up to us, (and our elected officials) to create a more user friendly system.
One where EVERYONE FEELS INVOLVED, WHERE EVERYONE HAS A VOICE. I found, during my exploration for this office that these and several other issues are the things that my community would like to have happen – and if I am not going to be the candidate, I will work hard with that Councilperson to help bring these issues to reality – and that by doing this, our Councilperson understands that the stakeholders are involved, hopefully giving our Councilperson strength and empowerment when sitting in City Council.
Because I am a single Father and because one of my children lives with a disability – and has asked me not to run, I had to make a choice – and of course, that wasn’t hard to do. So it is with mixed feelings that I say Thank You – Thank You for even thinking of me in this capacity.
I will still be involved – and I want all of you to be as well. WE can make a real difference in this election. A difference that could and will affect the lives of all of us in CD2, perhaps forever!
Let’s make it clear what we expect! Let’s offer up a Mandate to our next Councilperson and make it clear, we are 100% with you – as long as you don’t lose sight of the goal! Let’s not let this one slip away! Let’s control this election so that our next Councilperson KNOWS WHOM THEY REPRESENT!
Let’s make it clear!
Thank you all, very, very much.
Best Regards,
John T. Walker

John Walker endorsed Paul Krekorian. He spoke at his campaign kickoff press conference.
Paul is getting A LOT of community support, which surprises me...
Dont know much about Paul, but who would think an assemblymember would get so much support

especially a carpet-bagging assembly member that was just re-elected to office, and is running for office for the higher paycheck the CC position offers.

Thanks, your list looks like the most current, I'll change the post title.

his full statement included his support for Paul Krekorian, why did you cut it out?

John, I was prepared to give you a huge ovation until I read that you support PK. What part of carpetbagger don't you understand?
PK is a career politican who wants to leave a $116.000 year job with no retirement and sacrifice himself for a measly City Council job that pays $170,000 a year with perks and retirement, plus he wants to stay home with his one year old child.
Some sacrifice! He should have thought of that before he wasted tax payer money.
If he wins, we will have to pay for a special election, while our State and City are bankrupt, we are losing services and people are losing jobs!! He is not a good choice for our district.
We deserve better than him or any other money grabbing carpetbagger!
Bubank can have him if they still want him! I know for a fact they are not happy with their "turncoat"
and he has lost face with Glendale as well.

9:00, In his email to me, he expressed support for Krekorian, but what I have posted is the letter he attached as a .pdf that was sent out to the community.

John Walker is a class guy who is also politically smart enough to knows who is going to win this race.
His endorsement of Paul Krekorian makes perfect sense. If your going to get out of the race you should support the winner.

I don't even know who John Walker is.

I wish Sunland-Tujunga could choose the CD 2 councilmember. Unfortunately, you've got Van Nuys and Studio City to compete with for votes. I think those people will have different reasons for voting and I believe that the Sunland-Tujunga residents are more pure of heart. I don't agree with them in national politics, I bet, but I do in local and that's what this is about.
Since money has to come and ruin all elections, I hope the pure of heart get out the vote any way possible. Pull the voters off of their couches.

9:34 PM Do you have a crystal ball to make such a statement? Gee maybe people shouldn't bother to go to the poles at all because it doesn't appear that they count according to you. I am sick of people telling me what I should do and that those who don't have large amount of funds can't win. After our Measure B victory, the people have proven that anything is possible.
Whose Paul Walker anyway. I never heard of him and now I really don't care! I wonder how many candidates can be "bought out" of running in this election. What promises or commission jobs will they be offered. Let's see who they endorse and what reasons they will give for pulling out. I am sure there is a good list of reasons left to chose from.

What has 4:37 and 10:07 have to do with this thread? What is that rant about anyway? It doesn't sound like it has anything to do with the CD2 election.
Anonymous said:
why would you bother to post propaganda from an idiot who ran, and then quit the day after the applications were closed?
the guy is looking to promote some private entity is my guess.

Never heard of this guy, which means 99.9% of the voters haven't heard of him or most of these candidates. This is why it all comes down to money. Who can raise money in the late summer of an off election cycle during a recession? At best, maybe four candidates will qualify for matching funds. This effectively eliminates the others from contention. All the neighborhood activists doesn't mean shit--look at Vahedi. He had activists AND money and still couldn't beat a Sacramento politician. Galatzan won't be able to raise, because people hate her and LAUSD. Krekorian won't have any choice but to raise from usual suspects in Sacramento and he will have a harder time than he thinks even getting to $100k. Healey has run and lost about a dozen times--doubt her supporters are going to be thrilled about flushing more of their money down the toilet. That leaves Essel. If no one raises serious money, she might win it all in September.

You funny, dude.
Vahedi ran head to head w Koretz and came within 600 votes. Do not doubt the anti-establishment sentiment and it's power. The voters in Sept will be very informed.
Whoever it is you are working for, and I assume it's Essel, is in serious trouble with Healy, Essavi, and Pugliese in. These people all have name recognition on the ballot, where it counts.

Walker is a well known community leader is Studio City, so there is no need to shit on the guys just because he endorsed some one you don't support.
Why this matters is the pattern it sets, which is that of the primary candidates Krekorian is the only one picking up community and neighborhood leader endorsements. Tamar is disliked by many of them and none of them have ever heard of Essel.
The biggest joke here is on Essel, if you look at who is supporting her you might think she is running to replace Jane Perry.
Anonymous said:
How dumb is Janice Hahn, so dumb she was quoted saying this.
...Hahn said she is supporting Essel because of their work together when Essel serve the Airport Commisison and her private secotr experience."
SHE IS AN IDIOT!!! Essel was an executive at Paramount making a fortune and no one ever saw her out in the community. These executives who don't have a clue about Los Angeles all of a sudden want to be a politican. ESSEL is another Antonio person. NO NO NO
Janice Hahn just gave the kiss of death to Essel and that's her endorsement.

Chris Essel has been a part of the los Angeles Community for years. If th eposter didn't see herk, it was because he/she wasn't there, not because of Chris.
Chris is a warm, caring person, and will make a wonderful Councilmember. Expect a Wendy endorsement as well, becuae she is the closest thing you will find to Wendy Geuel.
No one wants another bleding heart libral Assemblymember. He needs to xtay and try to solve the problems in Sacramento, especially those caused by the Speaker, who is elected by a caucus of which he is a member.
It wil be Chris Essel, make that, Councilmember Chris Essel.

Or better yet note to Moron:
There is no such thing as the "Los Angeles Community".
Warming and Caring? are you kidding. Leona Helmsly is more like it.
Wendy has no dog in this race and has no reason to endorse any one.
As far as your last paragraph, why don't touch up on your spelling before you blog again.

This is all too bad. Because there are really 4 candidates in this race- Krek., Gal., Es., and Community Folk. (note the singular and upper case)
And in a head to head to head to head, Community Folk (CF) wins this. CF will get more votes "in tutti" than any of the big three.
Again, too bad. This is why there are cliques and parties. If only one CF candidate could emerge, it would all be over for the carpetbaggers and opportunists who don't really give a crap.

Chris Essel will have some problems explaining her position as Chair of the Workforce Housing Board. You may have heard of the problems with Henry Cisneros and Workforce Housing projects. City pension board expert said Henry's workforce housing was biggest problem in pension scandal. And Chris is Chair of the Board.

Why does this guy have to write a letter saying he WON'T run for City Council?
Who cares? If he doesn't run , then he doesn't run. No need to make announcements.
He wasn't the top candidate anyway.
I highly doubt that he could actually win.
People with a good chance at political victory usually don't pass up good opportunities.

Where is ZD when we need him the most?
Get him to run and he will smoke the rest of them.
