On this date in 1915, the Ottoman Gov't rounded up around 300 Armenian leaders, teachers, and intellectuals in what is now present day Istanbul. This is the day that is recognized as the beginning of a genocide that grew to claim over 1.5 million Armenian citizens. This Armenian holocaust is known as "The Great Calamity".
In many ways, today is what defines being an Armenian. Unity & resolve in the face of great adversity, not forgetting the past, and making dreams come true in honor of the many that died.

This is so depressing.. looking at the mistakes of those before us. Imagine what our kids will be dealing with from some of the mistakes we're making.

I have Armenian people very close to me whose family was affected by this tragedy and the effects are still there today.

It's happened in recent decades in Tibet and is still happening there == almost all the thousands of monasteries were trashed, monks imprisoned and the only ones still allowed to "operate" are under surveillance by Chinese authorities.
Plus large chunks of Tibet are in "China proper" not even the region now called Tibet, a small chunk of its pre-1959 self.
The Dalai Lama's in Santa Barbara right now. When he passes there's fear the younger generation won't be so patient and spiritual about it. Look at the recent riots that were suppressed. But sadly the world doesn't care in the face of more powerful "potential consumer" and debt holder China.
