130pm, 'close' only counts in horseshoes.
It doesn't count in elections. Sorry. The time to make that plea was before the election.
Election day is the day we counted the marbles to determine who has the most. Gary wasn't even close.

Good question Eric Garcetti and I instantly thought of Mrs. Crowl the blue haired, pedantic, English teacher I had in the 10th grade.
She was also a chaperone at the school dances and was an enthusiastic enforcer of the “no dancing too close rule” .
Well this was 1961, and those slow dreamy oldies groups were very popular in my neighborhood. Jesus, they had voices like a chorus of angels, and those songs of love and romance and heartbreak were so relative to all us horny lovestruck teenagers.
Well anyway, at a Friday night school dance the DJ was playing those fine oldies like “Earth Angel” “In the Chapel of Dreams” “Nite Owl” and my favorite group, The Chantels, singing “The Plea”, oh man was that a sexy, slow dancing classic!
I was dancing in the semi darkness with the beautiful, shy, perfumed up, Luciana “Lucky” Maldonado and trying not to get into trouble by dancing too close (no touching midsections!).
Mrs Crowl with a face like a praying mantis, was circling the school gym dance floor , scowl on her face, head lowered , looking for violators.
I was into the slow two step groove with “Lucky”, while the Chantels were harmonizing with their hypnotic plaintive wail, “Ohhhhh, hear my plea! baby baby baby baby! Stick with meeeee!
I was so into it I forgot the golden rule of no touching midsections and pulled “Lucky” so close to me that both our heads were on each others shoulders and our midsections among other body parts were tight as saran wrap.
Swaying together in the dark I forgot everything around me and was in a dream state.
That is until I started chewing hair along with my juicy fruit gum. It seems that I got “Lucky’s” wavy beehive coiffed hair caught in my gum while I was chewing and grooving to the beat of the legendary Chantels.
The song was almost at an end and I didn’t have a clue about what to do except to try to chew and bite the hair off my juicy fruit gum, but to no avail.
Then I spotted Mrs Crowl looking at us and moving quickly across the floor for closer observation of the perpetrators of this teenage sexual pronouncement.
What to do? I was chewing like a madman but without much success, and besides I didn’t want “Lucky” to know what was going on, shit, gum stuck in her beehive hairdo, that would be the end of our romance.
I heard Mrs Crowl screeching at us, “what is the matter with you both, control yourselves, you look disgusting, this isn’t a bordello! Let go of each other immediately!”
I held on tight, chewing like a beaver, Lucky was trying to push me away, the lights were on now, the other kids were looking at us.
I envisioned letting go and just leaving poor Lucky with a wad of chewed up juicy fruit hanging off the side of her head in front of the whole dance floor, Lucky would never speak to me again.
Probably twenty or thirty seconds passed with me holding on tight, Mrs Crowl screaming, and Lucky freaking.
Finally! with a slight ripping sound the wad of Juicy Fruit gum and hair separated from Lucky’s beehive hairdo.
I looked around embarrassed, with a wad of hair and gum in my mouth, Mrs Crowl immediately and vigorously kicked me out of the dance.
The next Monday morning after a vicious tongue lashing by Mrs Crowl and Principal Doren I got suspended from school for a week.
It didn’t matter to me though, I was a hero to the rest of the school for standing up to Mrs Crowl, and besides, Lucky Maldonado told me she really dug that song “The Plea” and thought I was the best dancer she had ever danced with. Ahhhhhhh!
Sometimes rules are not only made to be broken, but it’s essential that they be broken.

So I think there are some unique opportunities and some unique problems.
First, the opportunities:
1) $$--they got it, we need it. Los Angeles is north of 10% unemployment and is in many ways a preview of coming attractions for the country. We face shortfalls to our public coffers due to the downturn in the economy, but we also face tremendous downward pressures on our employment, housing, and business picture. The biggest opportunity is the up to $4 billion we estimate we can get rolling in the local economy in the next six months (next two preferably).
2) Being able to set the example. LA is a self-help city. That is to say, we passed local monies for housing, school construction, water quality improvement, and transportation. As such, the feds can leverage much more in LA than other places and get good bang for the buck here.
3) Being accountable. This is a biggie for us as progressives. Show that we are smarter with money than Republicans were when they had massive spending opportunities. Show that we audit, that we have the discipline not to fund pork projects and that we have strict financial oversight of our dollars.

problems and an answer to transportation

Problems:
1) much of the money will go through the state. This is silly when LA County is larger than 80% of our nation's states. Where we can drive as much money to our cities and counties, we will be in better shape and it will have a quicker impact.
2) I am scared it is already moving too slowly. Some of it will move fast--HUD money for public housing upgrades, energy efficiency, etc. But other money is months out and I think we need to be extremely fast in spending this money.
As for transportation, thank God for Measure R. I was very disappointed to see projects slow down due to the Sacto budget mess, but we will have some money (lower than projected due to economic woes) flowing from the sales tax that is Measure R. That said, we are six months behind where we were due to Sacto.
I wonder how garcetti thinks he was more responsible with money than Republicans.
Isn't he the city council president in a time where we went from having hundreds of millions in surplus to hundreds of millions in the hole?
Speaking of hole, where is zooma'tard parking his hole now that he is officially out of the spotlight*

I was going to go put the phonetic pronunciation of Pakistan up here, but then I realized that most of them here wouldn't know what it meant. What are all these dashes and lines and accent marks in the word?
