I held my nose this morning, and cast a vote for Phil Jennerjahn for mayor -- not because he stands any chance, not because I think he might make a good mayor, not because I necessarily agree with his policies, and not because I want him to win - or even show well.

I voted for him because he seemed the LEAST like Antonio Villaraigosa of any of the more visible choices (the 3-4 "giant" dwarves among the 9).

Moore, Soupy Dogg, Hernandez, etc. (and who knows who the others are), are all performers, kvetchers, contrarians, prima donnas, even deluded "lets go back to 1950" English-only flat-earthers, and self-promoters all -- each lacking any real vision other than "LOOK AT ME, MOMMY!"

That's where we went wrong four years ago, by electing the "look at me" candidate, when what we needed, and still need is a "look at the city and its real needs" crusader.

I always vote, regardless of how dismal the choices, and I seldom vote simply in "protest" - but this time I really had no other options.

This is what we've come to in our fair city. I LOVE Los Angeles as much as I always have. . . I'm just thinking of sleeping on the couch alone for awhile until we can get to "couples" counseling.

There are thousands of Latinos 3rd and 4th generation who can't stand people who only speak Spanish. . .

First off, your premise is silly, or perhaps just poorly communicated. If there are people who "can't stand" someone else because of the language they speak; if they hate someone else because they've failed to learn a second language, then they don't deserve to be listened to... they're too ignorant and intolerant to be a factor.

What I'm guessing you may have meant to say (but don't communicate that well in English yourself), is that they hate "the fact" that some other Latinos haven't learned to speak English yet.

In any case, if you're presenting this tripe as some kind of evidence, the numbers you present work against you.

If there are "thousands" of these can't-standers -- then realize there are MILLIONS of other Latinos that "can" stand it, or don't care one way or the other (because there are millions of Latinos in L.A.).

What reasonable politician would side with a tiny minority of "thousands" when "millions" are either okay with it, or favor it.

Democracy is a numbers game. Yours mean the current City leaders are doing what the majority wants already.

Yeah, it can be a bitch sometimes getting people to understand you, but deal with it. Learn a couple words, point, smile, ask for help in translation from someone nearby.

We've guaranteed "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" here. It doesn't say anything about "everyone will speak your language."

It ain't the end of the world.

We're not the first country in modern times that hasn't been able to maintain a "one language" existence, and we won't be the last.

Maybe that's not all bad. But either way, it's not for the "thousands" of your acquaintances to decide against the "millions" of others.

Chance of showers on election night: slight. Chance of voters: slighter.

Weather, political inevitability and voter fatigue may create a perfect storm for low voter turnout today, experts say.

Possible rain tonight may drive down the already dismal number of voters expected to show up at the polls to vote in the Los Angeles city election - especially if those voters are Democrats, said political science professor Nadine Koch.

"When we have inclement weather, the Democratic (Party) turnout is usually a little lower," said Koch, a professor and associate dean of undergraduate studies at California State University, Los Angeles.

One reason, she said, is that Democrats tend to include more lower-income voters who must either walk to polls or rely on public transportation.

And she said after an endless stream of local and national elections, many California voters tend to succumb to voter fatigue.

Nuch won't score nearly as high as high pandering nattering group of old homeowner association NIMBYs and Cooley's white Republican rednecks kept promising him he would. His base is small given the size of L A.

He said he'd show at McIntyre's LAX area Pitchforks Rally last night, along with Walter Moore, Zuma and the other gadflies, scaring up votes.

Had to drag his mentor/ boss DA Steve Cooley out in front of the cameras last night to make personal attacks against Weiss.

Talk about sinking as low as you can go -- then Cooley calls Weiss elitist, arrogant, and more redneck stuff, and sums it up, "He's just not my kind of guy." No, Weiss hasn't sent out nasty Mother Goose-themed mailers with lies and distortions about other candidates, and the last one was even lower, crasser and cruder.

Can you imagine Weiss, Bratton and Antonio, or Garcetti, Greuel -- even any of the ones this blog loves to hate -- "campaigning" this way? Only their buddy and blog fave Zine.

Higby, do you know that YOU are the source credited in Nuch's website for his attacks on Weiss? Along with kaye's blog? Two right- wing sites whose life-blood is slinging highly opinionated, vulgarly expressed dirt at anyone at City Hall especially those associated with Antonio.

But at least, you don't even pretend to be factual, just mongering in "rumor and innuendo." Providing a hits-inducing forum for Quackers. qvetchers and malcontents of every stripe.

Then you get someone who's running for an office that requires the highest credibility, using you two as "media sources." Reflects who he is and how he's run.

The only silver lining behind this cloudy, gloomy election is that after this, "Wacko" Walter will go away and never be heard from in L.A. again.

I'm betting his bags are already packed, and he probably has a freighter hired to take his intolerant behind away to the world capital of intolerance, France.

The tarnish on that silver lining is that Zuma Dogg probably won't go away. HIS bags are packed all right, because he's a flat-out bum (so, his bags are always packed).

But he really has no place to go, and the publicity that this blog and actual "real" media have given him is like cocaine to an addict.

He'll be jonesing for it, real bad, all over town though. Will media and elected officials ever learn to "just say no" to his habit, however?

Thanks ubrayj02 and alienation. It is very interesting how the suburban existence that was propped up to us all as the ideal Ozzie and Harriet family situation has been unmasked as not that great after all and in fact a pain in the ass in many cases. The move back to urban centers is due to many factors among which are, avoidance of long commutes and all the bullshit involved with it, being closer to cultural and entertainment centers, and just the plain old convenience of living in the city.

ubray02, Capitalism, I think has run it’s course in history. It is a system based on profit and greed but it caused and abetted the industrial revolution and moved humanity from an agricultural and craft based system that depended on barter and exchange to a manufacturing, industrial, consumer driven world that created economies run on capital, credit, money and financial manipulation.
As valuable a system that Capitalism has been in creating industry, and modernization of societies, it had to depend on Imperialism, Colonisation, and a world market where the class system demanded that some had wealth and riches and most had a meager existence based on battling for wages.
Capitalism reached it’s zenith in the later part of the 20th century, but the fuel of Capitalism is greed, which was also a large part of it’s downfall.
The greed of the financial institutions that are the engine of Capitalism was allowed to run at hyper speed, unchecked and unregulated, and the engine blew apart.
Monopoly and laisse faire Capitalism reigned supreme but without controls Capitalism devoured itself, cannibalism is an inherent ingredient in it’s DNA.

Capitalism is not a religion or some Godly gift to humankind as the Calvinist’s believe, it’s just a system of economics that ran it’s course and imploded.
I’m hoping for a replacement based on more humane ideals, real free enterprise, smaller, non corporate industry, craft and artisan based workers, less conspicuous consumerism, one more concerned with the quality of life for humans than in propping up a failed class system of social Darwinism.
Everything changes eventually nothing is static for long in nature, we may be witnessing a new era for mankind, I hope it’s a positive one.

Higby, Like you did, the Daily News calls Moore a disaster.

"Oh, it's fun to imagine Walter Moore, the clear front-runner of the challengers, taking over City Hall and the explosions that would occur once he started dismantling the long-entrenched political machinery: the long line of fired department heads (which would include the very popular LAPD Chief William Bratton); the political power brokers shown the door; the epic battles with the City Council.

It would be great fodder for the city's journalists and historians. But we don't believe that entertainment value should be the main reason - or even one of them - to choose a leader for the city, especially during a tremendously difficult time. And the prospect of the ensuing mess from such mass destruction should scare any responsible Angeleno who wants the city to work better, not fall apart."

Sherry Bebitch Jaffe was on tv explaining to the dum-dums at the papers who want Villaraigosa but not Jack and Wendy, that they say they want him to achieve his goals he's set out to do but then want to surround him with people who wish him ill? Just one reason no one is paying attention to the "opinions" of the papers anymore.

She said the mayor was “one of the worst mayors we’ve ever had” and that he’d been negligent in his oversight of downtown development. She also questioned his use of city revenue from parking meters, which she referred to as “payola.” She decided to support Saltsburg, who rarely speaks to council members without his sunglasses on, after hearing him on National Public Radio.

“He doesn’t care about being a celeb as much as Villaraigosa,” Roux said.

Well, it looks like L.A.City voters are as igornant as I expected them to be.

For Moore to come in second to Tony is one thing, but the ignorance found by the results indicate that too many voters simply don't really know who is running.

'Nuch' should have been voted with far more votes for him than Jack got.

Thank goodness there is time to inform L.A. voters about Jack, the hack and "Tru" the fellow who must win the runoff.

Measure B still clings to the stupidety of L.A. voters who cannot see the corruption staring them right in the face.

It looks like just mentioning solar power is enough to get the dim bulbs to vote for such a fraudulently created measure.

Tony didn't deserve the percentage he got, so that also speaks to the ill-informed voters in the city.

David didn't receive as many votes as I had hoped for, but he was not last.

Our work is cut out for us now to make sure 'hacky' Jack is not the next City Attorney.

But we will be dealing with a bunch of less-than-reasonable voters who see a glitzy campaign and the friend of a real shady Mayor as being superior to a "TRU" candidate that won't make the office of City Attorney into the Mayor's personal legal firm.

Here's my take on the run-offs:

Both Weiss and KOretz ran as "incumbents" (even though, of course, they are not).

Incumbents in LA City that don't win outright in the primary, don't win in the runoff.

The simple reason is that every vote for someone else is really a vote against them.

Ergo, Trutanich and Vahadi will be the winners in June.

Thanks to everyone who I have spoken with over the past three years at City Hall and around the community. I gave it my all over the past three years. Unfortunately, with only 3.4 % of the vote going to "Zuma Dogg" -- that is not nearly enough support to have him continue to show up at city hall to fight on the behalf of others. Let's now do the Municipal Election 2009 "Winners and Losers."

LOSER: Antonio Villaraigosa

Against pot activists, homeless guys, and union meat packers, you got 55% of the vote. And you expect to be elected governor?

LOSER: IBEW

You tried to take all the best union jobs away from your union brothers and sisters. You failed. They hate you. Loser!

LOSER: Bob Hertzberg

Your endorsement (Adeena Bleich) again proves to be the Kiss of Death. Plus Walter Moore got more votes than you did in your respective races for Mayor. Prove to us that you are still relevant.

LOSER: Adeena Bleich

Running for office because, "like, it's like, my turn" is not a platform, girl! Go to cotillion and learn how to treat people, then we'll talk.

LOSER: Robyn Ritter-Simon

How many failed attempts is this now? Time to hang 'em up.

WINNER: David Vahedi

From neighborhood councils to (almost) city hall. Impressive.

WINNER: Nuch Trutanich

No one thought you could force Weiss into a runoff, but you did. Now good luck in the runoff. Doubt you'll succeed.

WINNER AND LOSER: Walter Moore

A surprisingly strong showing means your platform had legs. But had you siphoned off a few more votes; had you raised a little more money; had you campaigned a little better...you might have made the runoff. Close doesn't count.

So he went with Zuma Dogg who came in fourth, behind only the other three fore mentioned candidates.

So unless he endorsed Villaraigosa or Walter (and he stated his reason for not voting for Walter) I guess you are mad that he didn't vote for, or endorse, Gordon Turner.
