Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Wednesday

Reports say that Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent Admiral David Brewer's job is on the line. The Board of Education met Tuesday in closed session to discuss his fate, taking no action, and racial politics may have allowed Brewer to work another day: though the Board is said to have the votes to fire Brewer, members were reluctant to dismiss the Admiral, an African-American, while the board's lone Black member - Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte - was away at a conference. Can we just break up the LAUSD now? It's being done anyway one charter school at a time; time to pack it in.

What happens when a developer works with a community, lives in the community and makes a seemingly good faith effort to be a good corporate citizen? Hopefully the developer gets the support of local leaders and can move forward. In Valley Glen that is the case but there are still some NIMBY/BANANA/CAVES that won't leave well enough alone.

The United Way has issued a report that paints a bleak future for Los Angeles. One of their prescriptions is to spend less on LAPD and anti-crime efforts and unfortuanately, it appears former LAPD Chief and Council Member Bernard Parks agrees. That would be the worst thing you can as we head into uncertain economic times. In the meantime, Westsiders are upset about paying the highest in taxes while LAPD patrols in their areas have been scaled back.

President-Elect Obama continues to assuage the concerns of conservatives, perhaps to the chagrin of liberals. First it was retaining Bush Defense Secretary Robert Gates, then appointing pro-Iraq war Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State and now Obama plans to call off that windfall profits tax for the oil industry. More cheap gas for all! So much for change.

Attention Mayor Sam comment spinners - the City of Los Angeles has a job for you! The City is looking for Public Relations Specialists and if you get assigned to the DWP you can make as much as $94,000 a year!

Yeah for Xavier Becerra. One of the favorite Latino politicans we have. Everyone likes Xavier because wasn't afraid to speak out against the laws the illegals should be following. Every Latino I know knew he would get on Obama's team. Bitter Bernie still acting like a crybaby. Seems somewhere along the line he lost his balls as a man. The Westsiders have more money so stop crying and hire your own damn security.

$94,000 a year to do PR for the DWP may seem like a fortune (that's about 40-45 bucks an hour depending on how much they overwork the salaried flack).

But, just consider that at an average (gouged) billing of $200 - $250 an hour, that's about one-FIFTH of what they were spending to have Fleshpeddler-Hillard do pretty much the same job on contract for them, 4-5 years ago.

P.S. Even in the Internet age, flacks must be fairly literate. Red Snot need not apply!

Gee...no Antonio mentioned anywhere in the news reports of Richardson appointment to Obama cabinet. Richard appointed to Secretary of Commerce

....There's no contradiction between diversity and excellence," Obama said. "I'm looking for the best people, first and foremost. It just so happens that Bill Richardson is one of those people."

In recent days, the Obama team has named the top lobbyist for the Latino advocacy group La Raza, Cecilia Munoz, to serve in a senior White House position.

The transition team also is considering Rep. Raul Grijalva, an Arizona Democrat, for Interior secretary, and Rep. Xavier Becerra, a Democrat from Los Angeles, for another top position, possibly as the administration's top trade official.

Richardson becomes the second Southwestern governor whom Obama has nominated for his Cabinet, coming just days after the announcement that Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano will be his nominee for secretary of Homeland Security.

Maybe if Obama keeps scatter-gunning his selections in every other state AROUND California, Antonio will get the message he's going NOWHERE else but to the assheap of termed-out L.A. mayors.

Then msybe he'll start his OWN political blog, a al "Mayor Sadam's Sister City."

He could call it: "Love AND 'Labor' Lost" -- or

"Lies My Mayor Told Me" -- or, maybe just . . .

"1.4 GPA; How I peaked in College"

Lots of people asking why the hell De La Hoya got a statute and not ummmm KOBE???

LA Slimes....I confess to being slightly taken aback at the debate over whether or not Oscar De La Hoya deserved to have himself depicted in a statue outside of Staples Center.

His 14-foot likeness, standing on the ropes in a celebration pose after a boxing victory, was unveiled for all Monday, near statues of other Los Angeles sports icons, the former Laker Magic Johnson and the former Kings hockey star Wayne Gretzky.

Here in Las Vegas, where De La Hoya will fight Manny Pacquiao in a 147-pound match that has become the biggest noisemaker of the year, there continues to be much debate over De La Hoya's statue-worthiness. Part of that is because our sports columnist, Bill Plaschke, wrote that maybe there are others more worthy, that maybe a boxer who hasn't won a lot recently and who has a business connection with the people who run Staples Center and decide on the statues doesn't quite make the cut.

Thanks Obama for not raising taxes on the oil companies. I filled up my SUV for $40 last night for the first time since probably 2005. Lets leave it alone and let the economy heal itself on it's own.

See if gas is cheaper that's money you'll spend elsewhere or maybe put in the bank. Either way it promotes growth going to businesses, investors, employees, etc. rather than the government.

Nothing less than cutting taxes will spur this economy forward.

It appears our new President may get this despite what he had to say during the campaign to get the text messagers and the wack jobs on 538 and Daily Kos to get out the vote.

The police (Bratton) response to the "under-staffed" policing reality that will happen or continue to happen is the westside is missing the point- aside from the one of getting something for your tax dollars. The idea of "crime prevention" is what most people want. Patrols serve that end. Chief Bratton seems to equate "solving crimes" and "apprehending offenders" with "preventing crime."

People, given the choice, rather than catching a cold getting some top-notch medical treatment, would rather not catch a cold in the first place- "prevention" is better than "after the fact" remedies. The same idea follows with crime and Bratton misses it.

Frequency of patrols and prompt response times work to the promotion of a prevention environment. THAT IS THE IDEA.

I think it was around the time of the Watts Riot that things changed, but then, LAPD had 1-man cars in the daytime and then 2-man cars at night, then they had 2-man (person, now) cars. Also in the Sheriff’s Dept., they had 1-man cars and the deputies in the cars wore helmets ALL the time, not just for problem times. (My impression was that they were into "intimidation" as being part of professionalism.

Lots of small cities have 1 officer cars to patrol and then a backup car comes when there is a traffic stop or incident response; Of course, most of those cities don’t have crime coming out of their ears 24-hours a day, either. But their practices may help things go that way.

The officer in the news story who said the coverage is weak and the response time is not good must have some very good things happening for him as far as job security since the Chief does not like opposition, as CM Dennis Zine and the Jamiel’s Law issues showed.

The city council- in the face of THIN police patrols and coverage- CONTINUES it push for denser development. When’s that Universal City-NBC move happening? They are true hypocrites and liars, but if they really don’t see the contradictions, then they are morons. Maybe they are both; For sure most of them make a good run at being “morons.”

This whole subject would not survive a REAL debate or complete discussion. You could not count those “sham” (or “shame”) presentations at the Council Meetings that they call debate since the decisions are pretty much made before the first public commenter comes to the mike. About all those unanimous votes on things? Most of the Council probably has no idea of what they are voting on if it wasn’t brought up in their district- they just vote for each other's items to get the reciprocal treatment when they have a matter of their own to pitch for council approval. They rely on that for decision-making more often than any merit-based reasons.

The police thing is too important to have the Chief and his spin-meisters get away with it. Tony should be out there himself policing since it was his self-promoting idea to kick up the trash fees for the very SAME trash service, maybe worse now with more people- probably poorer people, too- in the city every week, and we still are NOT hitting the 1,000 officer mark. More ON THE STREET is what is important. Why hire another 100 if half will be inside all the time?

Maybe more civilian employees could handle office work to get cops on the street- they couldn’t cost MORE than an officer’s salary. Do the office people need to have guns? The way things are going, all offices will need to consider packing with no cops around for patrols.

March 2005 was the last time that gas was below $2.00 a gallon price.

(You can check that yourself if you doubt- I just heard that myself about a month ago on some talk show [not "john and ken's"] and it sounded right to me.)

Yeah and those cities don't have gang bangers with better guns then the police who shoot at them all the time. Get real. The rich now want to have more police officers then the poor communities but sit in their mansions and act like crybabies. You want to talk crime prevention tell those rich idiots to hire their own damn security patrols in their neigborhoods. Thanks to Bitter Bernie LAPD lost 1,000 officers and over 300 retire each year.IF the idiot council members would have voted to put the 1/2 cent sales tax a couple of years ago, we wouldn't be in this mess.

December 04, 2008 6:31 AM

The sales tax you speak of is not simply "1/2 cent sales tax", it's more honestly represented as AN ADDITIONAL 1/2 percent ADDED to the existing sales tax."

This statement about the gangbangers with "better guns than the police who shoot at them all the time," would need some specifics for the "better guns" and "all the time" and without specifics, it's just using the hyperbole to reach peoples' fear emotion.

More taxes would not have kept us from what is happening now, but a better city management in Council Chambers and the Mayor's office might have changed the course for a better direction. If you consider people who are taking a position that is in opposition to your own to be "crybabies" then there's not much else to say on distribution of city resources and rational management of a police department. You might as well be on the staff of the CMs for all your position represents. Well, except for the westsiders' CMs.
