Same-Sex Marriage May Be In Trouble
As of right now, Proposition 8 which will ban same-sex marriage is getting a majority of votes. The measure appears to be winning 52% to 47% with about a third of the precincts statewide reporting.
Though California has voted in large numbers for Barack Obama and what would be considered more left leaning positions on other issues, that, as was feared, has not translated into no votes on the measure.
What appears to be driving the measure's success, besides the anticipated votes from conservatives, is a large percentage of yes votes from Latinos and African Americans.
Though 95% of African Americans and 75% of Latinos in California voted for Barack Obama, 70% of African Americans voted yes on 8 and 51% of Latinos did. White voters in California voted against Prop 8 and for Barack Obama in the same percentages as those who voted for John McCain and in favor of Prop 8, 53% for Obama and No on 8 and 47% for McCain and Yes on 8. 85% of Republicans in California voted for McCain but only 80% voted Yes on 8.
By the numbers, 27% of those Democrats who voted for Barack Obama also voted Yes on 8 and against marriage equity.
As the returns come in the margin may change but if the exit polls are correct tomorrow could be a very sad day for many families.

African-Americans are both deeply religious as well as anti-gay, so it makes sense that proposition 8 would go down in flames pardon the pun with a large black showing.

Yes: 4,293,650 (51.9%)
No: 3,982,497 (48.1%)
Obama could have stemmed this, but his only public statements were against marriage equality. His only support for gay people was a secret letter to a GBLT organization. I was hopeful for a close vote and a recount, but this does not surprise me.
As a 2nd-class citizen, do I still have to pay taxes to support an openly discriminatory state Constitution? Yes; really?

Californians want to drive a stake through the heart of "marriages" between people of the same sex. They don't want it trivialized by the gay and lesbian community, PETA or polygamous Muslims.
I'm really sick about the passage of Prop 8. I keep hoping we live in a time of tolerance and civil liberties, but then hate funded by religious entities creeps back in.

There is hate on all sides. Our only hope now is to move past it. Each of us must admit where we were over the top (I was, not on this issue but on others) and resolve to work together.

I hate the way the term homophobia is used. The definition of homophobia means that you are afraid of gay people. I'm not afraid of gay people, nor am I bigoted. I believe that marriage should be defined between a man and a woman. This law would not forbid Civil Unions. Gays are still allowed Civil Unions. Nobodies forbidding them from performing their own ceremonies in churches that condone their lifestyle. What two consenting people 18 or over do in their own bedroom is their own business and we as Americans should have the right to express our opinions about whether we agree or disagree with it and they have a right to disagree with our view point as well.
Just because I don't approve of their lifestyle doesn't mean I hate them. Love and approval are not the same thing.
