OC Insights: HEEF Apple of Gold Dinner a success

(John Palacio and Irene Ibarra)

A few weeks back I attended the ECCO Awards dinner. While there I met Santa Ana Unified School District Trustee John Palacio who invited me to attend last night's annual soiree of the Hispanic Education Endowment Fund at the Anaheim Hilton.

Many local pols were there, but many were absent, most notably Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido and Mayoral candidate Michele Martinez (who did attend the ECCO function). Among those in attendance were SAUSD candidate Irene Ibarra who graciously had me at her table (which was much better than having dinner with my arch-nemesis Commie Girl, from whom I sat across at the ECCO event), as well as Garden Grove Council candidate Linh Ho and SAUSD candidate Mike Gonzalez, who were both also seated with us. Mayoral candidate George Collins was also there taking plenty of still photos. Even Democratic operative Phil Bacerra was there, and he was having trouble being in the same room with SanTana Councilwoman Claudia Alvarez at the bar afterward, yet couldn't resist sitting literally two feet away. Gotta love that guy.

This year's recipients of HEEF scholarships are too many to list here, but Herminia Rodriguez of Valley High School in Santa Ana was awarded 'Most Promising Young Teacher,' Arnold Guerra III, PH.D. of Orange Coast Community College in Costa Mesa was awarded for 'Community College Instruction,' and Patrick Yrarrazaval-Correa of Carr Intermediate in Santa Ana was awarded for 'K-12 Educational Leadership.'

HEEF's fundraising goal for 2008-09 is $3 million and they offer a donation model that allows one to choose a field of study or other subfund to which they want to contribute. For more information, please visit heef.org.

Hey, the Mayor invited me here to bring some OC news. Well, there ya go. If you don't like it, then please tell Michael because honestly, I don't want to read about OC here either; my strength has always been national and global commentary.

I'm still searching for the Wizard of Oc, remember. SAVE SARAH!

Here's a thought. Most of those who read this blog, most of the two dozen, are concerned with City of LA politics, and now national politics. Reports from the OC might be better received if they related to something that the LA folks are interested in.

An example might be Corona's corruption trial, the neverending efforts of rightwing nutcase Congressman Dana Rohrbacher to support Bush, invade and attack countries that don't like us, and root out all the communists.

The "Home of Los Angeles Politics" was the Home of Higby's and Haikula's love affair of Sarah Palin.

Now we have O.C. news, aarghhh !!!

Does anybody know a blog which covers L.A. politics?

Our analytics show several hundred readers a month from areas such as Santa Ana, Irvine, Lake Forest, Garden Grove, Anaheim, etc. Sarah was nice enough to join our team and among other topics share her expertise of local OC politics.

Orange County is right next door to LA County and there's a lot of overlap. I think its worth looking into.

Carona's trial isn't for months. Reports are that he and his wife are in it together and are preparing for court. According to the OCReg, that is all they are doing. They also refuse to read anything written about them.

As for Debbie Cook, it's really just a waiting game. Her camp says she polls well, the Republicans say she doesn't stand a chance. That's typical for a congressional race. If Rohrabacher is depending on his incumbency to carry him through this election, it may be his undoing, but it is also his race to lose. We'll see how Debbie's GOTV does in 16 days.

Boring stuff. Anything else? ;)

Let's hope that Art Pedroza takes Carlos "Water Bra" Bustamante's seat from him in November. Miguel Pulido and Carlos "Water Bra" Pulido were among the several that came, stood up and then walked out of the NAACP debate a few weeks ago. Art, on the other hand, stayed. GO ART!

Some OC politics is indeed relevant to LA, especially when it comes to statewide issues and races. Not everything, but well-chosen news from the OC can only help, as long as it doesn't mean less news from LA. So the post and this blogger are very welcome additions ... but what the heck is a "Commie Girl"?
