Ballot Recommendation: No on Proposition 8
Proposition 8, also known as the Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry Act, will appear on the November 2008 ballot in California. It was previously titled the Protect Marriage Act. It has also been known as the Same-Sex Marriage Ban or the Limit on Marriage Amendment. If it passes, it will add a new constitutional amendment to the California Constitution that will have the following text: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." The ballot title for the measure says that Prop. 8 "eliminates the right of same-sex couples to marry".

I am a white, heterosexual, Christian, conservative Christian male who is voting no on Proposition 8.
I am well aware that many individuals have a personal, religious or other issue with homosexuality. That is at the core of this evil (yes evil) ballot initiative which violates the core principles of the Republican Party of limited government, individual liberty and personal accountability.
In addition to being a sacred and emotional tradition, marriage is also a business proposition. In our common law, we've acknowledged the right of parties to enter into agreements with one another and that such agreements can be legally recognized.
At the same time, we have a right to our opinion in this country and a right to not be forced to participate in that which we believe in.
Proposition 8 is contrary to conservative values and does nothing to prop up the values of those who do not agree with homosexuality nor would it do anything to save the state of heterosexual marriage which is in big trouble in some quarters. Permitting same-sex couples to marry has absolutely no affect on anyone's heterosexual marriage.
Nor would it require anyone who does not support same-sex marriage - such as churches - to do so.
More importantly it protects the rights of individuals, keeps families whole and encourages committment and demand accountability for the well being of individuals. If Proposition 8 were to pass, it would devastate many of California's families.
This is why Republicans such as Governor Schwarzenegger, Ward Connerly (can't get more Republican than him!), Dennis Zine and others are supporting a no vote.
Though California is increasingly liberal and will award Barack Obama it's electoral votes by a big margin, that in and of itself is not enough to defeat this awful measure. Indeed, Obama's popularity may have the affect of drawing out larger numbers of African-American and Latino voters who are politically liberal but socially conservative. At the same time the segment of California's population that are traditional values voters will be out in force.
That's why it's important that free thinking Republicans, libertarians and centrists make sure to get out and vote against Proposition 8 and preserve marriage equity.

Don't mind homosexuals but don't want marriage redefined. Sorry, but I'm voting "Yes" on 8.

I'm a white, moderate, Christian woman. I am voting no. I believe in separation of church and state. I think the state, under equal protection, should not judge what is moral. The govt should allow same sex marriage.
Churches, however, should have the right to decide without state intervention.
This allows homosexuals to be legally married whether or not their choice of churches allow it.

I find it interesting that people are opposed to this for certain moral reasons.
If marriage is to be defined by procreative circumstances, then what does that say about couples using birth control?

Higby you fat liar.
Blacks and Latinos are not opposed to gay marriage. They realize it's a civil rights issue. Nobody is worried they will vote for Barack and vote yes on 8.

Correction - Yes on Proposition 8.

Voting yes IS redefining marriage- that's why it's a "proposition."
You probably meant to say you DO want to redefine marriage, so that's why you're voting yes.
curious...

5:15 p.m. Can't you have discourse without calling Higby names? I disagree with almost everything he says, but am appalled at the vile names people call him.
I support your right to say what you want, but opt on the side of intelligent discourse. Please?

6:31-- Jerry Brown and four activist California Supreme Court Justices claim Proposition 8 "eliminates the right of same sex marriage". The rest of the world knows marriage is between a man and a woman and that they're pandering to gays and lesbians.

Most of the world doesn't give a flying fuck about gay marriage. The U.S. was founded by religious zealots, while the rest of the world has lived in a more expressive society for the past 500+ years.

I'm voting yes on 4, 8, 9, & 11; NO on everything else.
I view 8 as a referendum action against a court who decided the voters of California weren't supposed to have the last word.

Voters never had "the last word" on anything- and never should. If they did you'd be in jail for advocating mob action against the Judiciary.

I think loving couples, whether opposite or same sex, are entitled to the "equal dignity" of marriage that our Supreme Court so eloquently articulated. History will judge Proposition 8 proponents as hate filled bigots. Also, the marriage of GBLT people in California gives our economy a boost and helps retain incredibly talented people in our economy.
Vote for progress, vote for hope, votr for California's economy. Vote down the hate-filled Proposition 8 with your NO vote.

Some people are raising valid points like that kids will be required to learn about "gay marriage" in schools or else they'll be sued for violating equal rights. Right now, there are optional books that can be used to teach tolerance of kids who have gay parents, which is an issue in West Hollywood, Venice and such areas. But parents will have no option but to allow to include gay married couples as equally valid in the already-required Health Ed and other courses.
And then there's the issue of extra insurance costs which could raise everyone's premiums although personally I think that pales in comparison to how much we're all paying to subsidize the illegals and their kids who make up 3/4 of the county care. Gays at least tend to be educated and if anything above average in dual income.
Giving gays equal rights in civil unions that don't require kids to learn about them as the same as those their religions teach as equal "in the eyes of God" would be fine with me.
I'm not religious but I resent making gay marriages equal to those we're supposed to consider sacred and teach our kids that.

8:41, you forgot to look up my ancestor's historical record. Google my name in conjunction with Los Angeles, then find a horse and gallop the hell out of here.
Your erroneous supposition that voters are not to have the last word has already gone down in flames; try telling that to those who voted in Proposition 13!
As for calling me a traitor, I suggest that if you want to find the true traitor, look in your mirror.

4:51, The Constitution does NOT state anything regarding separation of church and state - although the Federalist Papers do. But the Federalist Papers are NOT part of the Constitution. Read that one particular amendment VERY carefully:
"Congress shall pass no law regarding the establishment of a state religion," (but yet the second part of this amendment has been virtually ignored by the courts) "... NOR SHALL IT PROHIBIT THE FREE EXERCISE THEREOF." (caps are mine).
Upon the subject of Hispanic voters: I've noticed that Hispanic voters are conservative in their views, the vast majority being Church-centered and family-oriented. I predict that if the Hispanic votes are factored in, Proposition 8 will pass.
6:31, reread your voter's guide. A "no" vote sustains the current law as redefined by four judges of the California Supreme Court.
A "yes" vote overturns the opinion of the same Court.
I'm voting "yes" on 8.
