Nice turnout, great people!
SLAP is off to a good start.
I suggest that instead of taking on every issue, they get their feet wet with just one. One step at a time, one victory at a time, until all the kinks are worked out, and SLAP becomes a well oiled fighting machine.

Agreed. Go slow, lets just clean up the process first. There are some popular issues but though my libertarian soul has moderated a bit on responsible planning, I still believe in the free market and private property rights and we have to tread careful. A one size fits all approach will not work for LA. As much as developers need to realize its good business to engage with the community and the community has a right to be heard, many community leaders need to concede that property owners have a right to enjoy their land and realize a return where that's their mission. Coexistence is required.

If not, then I don't see myself and several others getting on this train.

However, Ron Kaye and some of the leaders involved so far understand and they're on the right track.

Focus on cleaning up the process before anything specific.

They need to field eight candidates for City Council. They should also find someone qualified to run for City Controller. Members can agree to disagree on various issues, but we must get these career politicians out of office.

And if one or more incumbents get ousted in the next election, you can bet those remaining will suddenly be much more interested in what their constituents have to say.

Could one of you post what happened at the meeting?

Thank you Walter for letting us know that Council members such ony Cardenas won by only 3,600 votes. That is unbelievable to have happened in a city with 4 million people. Shocking!!! No wonder we have such incompetent idiots rep'ing us. Great Great meeting with a lot of the people who are very active in the city and speak out. No doubt the voice of SLAP will be heard loud and clear to the idiots running this city

Good suggestions Joe and Michael. Everyone agrees with your concepts regarding the process, which we discussed while we were considering where "we go from here", during the debriefing session that followed the meeting

We hope you and all who attended will continue to participate and attend the next Town Hall meeting on September 6, to help bring it along. We haven't selected a location yet. Watch the SaveLA.com and ronkayela.com websites for a recap of the meeting and for futher information.

Those of us who helped put it together, are just facilitators who believe it can work. This is meant to be everybody's organization, regaredless of their affiliation, so please spread the word.

The only requirement is that they too want L.A. to be a great HONEST city that meets the needs of our citizens. Together, we can accomplish this. Please encourage everyone to participate! We had over 120 participants and according to the sign in sheets, people came from every region in Los Angeles! Together, we are a force to be recognized

We will let everyone know when we have a confirmed location.
We will again try for a more central meeting area that will be fair to all. If you know of a site that is centrally located and available on that date, please email us at ron@ronkayela.com and let us know. A big thank you to all who gave up your time to attend and are volunteering your expertise!

Walter - agreed. Just defeating someone like Ed Reyes or Alarcon or Rosendahl would in the next election would send a message.

For 10:44 good points as well, I'm watching how things go before I sign on 100% but based on Ron Kaye alone I'll help. As long as this doesn't become a bitch session against developers and looks deeper at 1) cleaning up the city 2) and coming up with real dynamic vision for LA that goes beyond our time on Earth then I think it will really be something.

Concur with most comments here.

The best moment of the day was the testimonial by the Wyvernwood resident on the effects that the proposed Fifteen Group development would have on the Boyle Heights community.

The "Third Floor" would love to frame the "SLAP Movement" as the domain of "angry, white, blue hairs". But the reality is that Angelinos of all races are angry at the current state of affairs on Spring Street.

The challenge ahead will be building those bridges to communities and sharing our brand of enpowerment.

Ron Kaye was at the LA Neighborhood Congress meeting yesterday morning. I don't know the exact name. He sounded really good, had good ideas and is worth following. I am sorry I was not able to make the Glassell Park meeting. I hope it is posted where their next meeting will be held at.

Red Spot, we are on the way to buiding those bridges. We had people from: Neighborhood Councils,Civic Organizations, Home Owners Groups, Fraternal Organizations, Educators and Public Safety represented and many others participating. That is a good cross section and no one was left out. Everyone has a voice and are able to share their concerns.
We will all dertermine our direction together. Stay tune and participate!

Well, I tried to "patch" things up with ole' Nina Royal, but she wasn't having any part of it. Guess we'll just never see "eye to eye." (sigh) And what the hell was she doing with that 8X10 piece of paper stapled to the front of her sweater? At least Glassell Park was nice and close for her, since, after all, she lives in Glendale now, as opposed to Sunland-Tujunga, where she's always spearheading some orgiastic safety fair....

I had a great time at the meeting.
I do have a difference of opinion
about Involving People. I feel there should be several issues being worked on at once.
People will only get involved when their issue is being worked on.
To each person or group their Issue is the most Important.
You are working with Community Leaders, They can "Lead smaller Break out Groups" and still work with the main body for support.
I do believe that every person holds a piece of the Puzzle
We need each piece that we can get
to see the Whole Picture.
Just my opinion of course.

P.S. Who would decide which issue is most Important? To me it would be Education. I know Joe's would be Planning and Issues related to the Disgusting Home Depot Debacle.

Sorry Rita that you couldn't make up with Nina, but it's no reason to come on here and make fun of her eye patch. That wasn't subtle if you thought it was. I hate to break it to you, but you are one of the "blue-hairs" that people talk about when they think of SLAP. You look like one and you sound like one and you have no business making fun of others.

People are so obsessed w/ color! I have blonde hair, not blue, (but my blood is-- just access "Duke of Wharton" online!) Sorry to break it to you, 2:28, but you're obviously just another superfluous nobody jealous of my constant stream of ribald erudition (or, "erudite ribaldry"- take your pick) and my svelte-but-comely physical form. I will continue to attend any event I choose to attend and continue to make fun of whomever I want to make fun of, so you might as well get used to me. 'Til next time!
