The Los Angeles City Council?

Today, the Los Angeles City Councilmembers spoke on ITEM NO. (43)

ITEM NO. (43)
08-1920

RESOLUTION (REYES - GARCETTI - HUIZAR)
relative to the ongoing labor dispute between the Community Labor Environmental Action Network (CLEAN) Carwash Campaign and carwash business owners.

Recommendation for Council action:

RESOLVE to strongly endorse the efforts of both the CLEAN Carwash Campaign and the carwash business owners to reach a just and decent agreement for all parties involved in this labor dispute, calls on both parties to enter into bargaining sessions and URGE both parties to continue their negotiations in earnest until a satisfactory agreement is reached and to help facilitate this effort, OFFER City Hall or other City property as a neutral location for the parties to meet and negotiate.

Some of the people asking the City Council for help today needed interpreters. They couldn't speak English. A few of the Councilmembers spoke in Spanish, so I can't tell you what they said. But, I can tell you that the people at the car wash are supported by all of the Councilmembers. They voted unanimously.

The City Councilmembers are giving Employers who hire Illegals and Illegals who work at this carwash, the City Hall building to, "meet and negotiate"?! They are helping both parties work things out.

My Son, Jamiel Shaw, II, an American Citizen, was MURDERED by an illegal alien gangbanger! We can't even get the City Council to even talk about Jamiel's Law! They're not offering us the City Hall to meet in. Not one of the Councilmember's will bring Jamiel's Law up for discussion. It's not right. We are treated unfairly and we are completely ignored. Where's the unanimous help and support for American Citizen's in the City of Los Angeles, in San Francisco?

I'm not targeting all illegals. But I am targeting illegal alien gangbangers and the actions of the Los Angeles City Council. The Councilmembers will not talk about Jamiel's Law on the Los Angeles City Council floor. Yet they openly support illegal immigrants, on the Council floor?! It's NOT RIGHT!

Jamiel, It really starts getting to you, doesn't it, when Illegal aliens are welcomed and treated with kid gloves. I have absolutely had it with the scum politicians of this city and country who pretend to represent our interests. Your family, the Bologna family and the wives and children of Ramos and Compean are getting the treatment reserved for American citizens. Both McCain and Obama promises to welcome even more illegal aliens. After all, as McCain so proudly says, "They are God's children". Well, what the hell does that have to do with it? They are killing us literally as well as financially. We Americans have got to do something.

Mr. Shaw,

Here is an email someone sent me with this as the subject:

"Why wasnt there 50K for Shaw's killer?"

Councilmember Huizar Announces $50,000 Reward

Last week Councilmember Jose Huizar announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the identity, arrest, and prosecution of the person(s) responsible for the death of [Victim's Name].

The Los Angeles Police Department is requesting your help in identifying the person(s) responsible for this murder.

If you know who committed this crime, or if you have any information about the murder,
please contact the Los Angeles Police Department immediately. All information will be kept strictly confidential!

SHAW FAMILY: The City Council meeting is in Van Nuys THIS FRIDAY.

I know it may not be easy to get there, and you may be busy, but if you could get to the meeting in Van Nuys on Friday, it would be VERY GOOD, I think...because the meeting in Van Nuys is in a small, intimate room -- and the Councilmembers walk around and talk to people -- and people from the Valley will be there (HOPEFULLY!!!) -- and your (and/or your family's) presence would make a BIG impact in the room and on TV.

These workers are forced to work 8 - 10 hours a day in sweat shop conditions. Often they are only allowed to take home tips. They work with dangerous carcinogens and are forced to work without protective gear. When they try to organize they are punished , ridiculed and fired. No one needs to be treated like this anywhere. Thank God the city did something. Now if they would only Look at Jamiels law as well.

Unfortunately Zuma... you are once again misleading...

The $50,000 rewards are primarily initiated by the Police Department in consultation with the Councilmember from the district in which the murder occured.

They use it when they do not have leads and request information from the public to develop a case against a suspect (payable ONLY if the suspect is found guilty.. AND the information they provided was substantial to identify the suspect).

LAPD had a suspect almost immediately, and he is on trial now. May he get the justice he deserves for the heinous crime he committed.

Interesting, Zuma, that you claim to be a fiscal watch dogg... and yet, you want to give away $50,000 to get information that the LAPD already had.

But I guess that doesn't fit into your tactics to throw as much mud as possible and hope something sticks!

The Dogg raises one of his brilliant questions, to which the obvious answer is, BECAUSE EVERYONE KNOWS WHO THE KILLER WAS, SO HOW CAN THERE BE A REWARD FOR FINDING HIM? HE EVEN ADMITS IT IN COURT AS DOES HIS DRIVER AND GIRLFRIEND.
(This shows how listening to zuma can only lead you astray, and puts you in company that dooms you.)

My deepest sympathies to the Shaws. And I agree that Alarcon and his bunch who make a big case out of car wash workers who don't get a long enough lunch break and are paid the legal min. wage, because HE/Alarcon thinks they should get a "living wage" even though they can't speak English and get another job and are probably illegal in the first place, is upside down. Our social benefits and laws should be protecting citizens and legally employed people, not illegals.

But the way this question is framed in flagrant ignorance of the facts, is typical of the people pushing Jamiel's Law -- going after Bratton and the Mayor and Council, singling out Jack Weiss, who's done more towards fighting gangs than anyone (even Greig Smith supports his efforts) -- is all wrong. Nor is SP40 the problem, if you actually look at the law, nor does Zine's
"motion" add anything worthwhile -- he's grandstanding against Bratton, the Mayor and Council colleagues. L A cops CAN ask suspects legal status -- but they'd need resources to back up their investigations and are already short-staffed in dealing with crimes and homicides.

The ones who let Espinoza out of jail are the Sheriff's agents and especially, agents of DA Cooley, who's in charge of felonies like Espinoza's and the guy who was let out to murder his wife right before the recent elections, despite a restraining order on him. THEN your rabble-rousing ignorant talk show hosts mix in the San Francisco case, and somehow think going after the LOCAL L A authorities will have anything to do with all of it.

You'd need to start at County level, but ideally STATE level -- there's a Runner Bill designed to do just that, and while it has aspects that may doom it (like treating all gangbangers over 13 as adults), at least the approach of a a STATE bill is the valid one.

As this post of yours shows, there is an underlying issue of illegal immigration, and how immigrants get "special attention" from their special interest groups that trump the rights of citizens. As your talk show talkers keep saying: it's a state issue. So go after it accordingly. But -- and I say this with deep sympathy and support -- going after our local officials who are already working hard to fight gangs, is wrong and self-defeating.

If they were LEGAL IMMIGRANTS the employers could not take advantage of them.

They work with dangerous carcinogens and are forced to work without protective gear. When they try to organize they are punished , ridiculed and fired.

No one forced them to work there!

No one needs to be treated like this anywhere. THATS TRUE EVEN TO AMERICAN CITIZENS WHO ARE MISTREATED.

What we do need is a city gov't responsive to the needs of CITIZENS like Jamiel Shaw Sr. Deport illegals now!

U.S. to launch program allowing illegal immigrants not wanted in crimes to turn themselves in
Santa Ana and San Diego are among five cities where people who have been ordered deported can surrender from Aug. 5 to Aug. 22 to avoid being arrested and detained.
By Anna Gorman, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
8:08 PM PDT, July 30, 2008
Federal authorities are launching a pilot program next month to allow noncriminal illegal immigrants with final deportation orders to surrender rather than face possible arrest and detention.

Two Southern California cities -- Santa Ana and San Diego -- are among five cities nationwide where immigrants can turn themselves in from Aug. 5 to Aug. 22.

Certain immigrants who do so will be given up to 90 days before being required to leave the United States. And in some cases, the agency will pay for the flight for the illegal immigrants and their relatives.

Activists on both sides of the immigration debate expressed skepticism.

"I wouldn't expect them to have to turn people away at the doors," said Ira Mehlman, spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform.

Immigration officials said the program is in response to criticism from advocacy groups, who have said that early-morning raids by armed agents disrupt families and communities.

"We want to show advocacy groups and community-based organizations that we're open to suggestions and we are open to different approaches," said Jim Hayes, acting director of detention and removal operations for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Hayes said the program could also cut the agency's detention costs, because the immigrants would otherwise be detained if arrested. It could also help reduce the number of immigrant fugitives on the government's list.

Hayes said more than 500,000 people are eligible to participate. The other three cities in the pilot program are Chicago, Phoenix and Charlotte, N.C. He said the agency is reaching out to immigrant-rights and faith-based groups for publicity.

"From our perspective, this is a realistic opportunity for noncriminal aliens," Hayes said.

Angelica Salas, executive director of Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, said despite people's fear of being arrested, she doesn't expect immigrants to come forward because they have families, jobs, homes and lives in the U.S.

"It's more of public relations for the agency that has come under severe attack for the tactics that they have used, the violations for human rights and the denials of due process," she said.

Salas added that immigrants who want to leave could leave whenever they want without first turning themselves into federal authorities. She warned immigrants to be cautious about blindly signing paperwork.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it will continue to track down fugitives in Southern California and throughout the nation, arresting and removing immigrants who have criminal records or who have failed to abide by deportation orders. Last fiscal year, fugitive operations teams arrested more than 19,000 immigrants nationwide, including more than 15,600 who did not have criminal records.

Mehlman said the program is intended to save the government the trouble of going out and finding the illegal immigrants.

"It should not in any way deter ICE from enforcing the law against those people who are not anxious to depart on their own," he said.

The arrogant idiots who refuse to speak English in our city and make tax free money then cry they are poor are finally leaving. They have no one to blame but themselves for working like slaves for a buck. They have ruined the wage factor for legal citizens

LA Slimes...Study finds 11% drop in illegal immigrants Conservatives hail the report as proof Bush's controversial policy of enforcement via workplace raids is working.

These labor efforts are almost always run by liberal elitists who are using the plight of these hardworking albeit illegal people to effectively use the city to do a legal shakedown of business. For example, the "community benefits" packages as part of developments. Anyone who is honest knows that these payments only go to very connected non-profits, unions, etc. and a few limited people and don't trickle down at all to the community at large.

The Clowncil and some elitist political opportunists have found a way legally do what Tony Soprano has to do outside the law. Sad.

6:55's post sounds like it was lifted from the very same words spoken by council members, who simply were the cheerleaders for the car wash group. No doubt that bad conditions exist, but NO ONE THINKS ABOUT HOW IT GOT THAT WAY.

Cheap labor chased out the need to really follow regular hiring practices. An employer thinks, "Well, they must be o.k. with it, they keep coming to work here, don't they?" Exploitation was a natural consequence.

The uncontrolled illegal immigration fueled all this. It's another irony that the Council wants to make laws for a group(s) who are largely, if not all, themselves lawbreakers. But that's the unspoken truth EVERYWHERE in government, at all levels. Mention that and then get the "How can you say that?" reaction.

Illegal immigration is illegal. The OTHER related law requires an EMPLOYER to verify legal status of his employees to work for him/her. That's ignored, of course, and things would really have not descended in so many ways if the laws were enforced.

These washeros in particular would likely not be exploited since they would not be here except for this illegal presence in the U.S. that started the ball rolling.

There is so much hypocrisy, cronyism and b.s. perpetrated by the council who endeavor to "LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD"- they certainly aren't the ones to do it, unless you use the example in home security where actual home burglars (reformed) are used to diagnose the actual security of a home, etc., since they are experts. So we get these shifty guys to tell us what is wrong here? Is that the idea? Hah.

And it's generally considered rude to speak in a language that is not understood by one you initially were speaking with, especially without some apology and translation for the one left out. And don't say, "Spanish speakers are being treated rudely then because everything is in English."

Well, first, English is the language of the U.S. and translations are a result of evolution for providing this as “help” more than “a right.” Learning English would be be expected in a country like the U.S. Be Real.

If hiking, would you constantly stop at a ravine each time when you would like to cross it while a bridge is available a little way off your path so you could continue by walking a little more? It is very much what we have with language, stopping your own growth without a need to do so. You are not forced to speak English but don't complain and make demands resulting from choices that you made.

Huizar for one was the rude guy; just like a guy falling all over himself when introduced to an attractive woman while with his own girlfriend or wife is standing next to him being completely ignored. Just very crass, council person.

There was an offer of providing city facilities for "a neutral location" for the car wash labor dispute to be conducted. How nice. Actually, neutrality WOULD be nice, given the Council's exuberance in joining the condemnation of labor practices and the suggestions made by council persons of NOT going to such car washes.

AND, why SHOULD a person get paid more than minimum wage if they don't educate themselves to DO better and get a better job? "Because it's right" won't do- otherwise people should have cars that take the bus and things like that. They forget money and economy somehow has to fit in here when they rearrange society.

Illegal immigration has made a lot of politicians come to make some absolutely untenable statements and concepts, meanwhile tossing aside things that ARE real.

And then we come to crime. EVERYONE in this council is responsible for not DOING EVERYTHING THEY CAN to deal with gang problems FIRST by addressing the Jamiel's Law motion. If they are going to reject it, be public about it. Don't rely on the majority vote or Weiss' intransigence to hide behind.

They are self-serving, pandering, prejudiced liars, and, "leadership" is a word that should never again be uttered in the Council Chambers in reference to ANY of them.

But, I know. “How can you say that?”

Oh yes, and it's racist to note that the City Council members are speaking Spanish during an official meeting regarding supposed car wash complaints by illegal aliens. It's also racist to notice that they just "sold" ambulances for $1 each to a Mexican city. I wonder which council member originates from that city. And it's so racist to note that blacks are being targeted by Latino gang-bangers. Every single stinking council member needs to be voted out. And we need a new mayor who actually will represent citizens. What a concept!
