Report: Universal Fire Caused by Roofing Crew

The County of Los Angeles reports that the greater alarm fire that occurred on the back lot of Universal Studios Sunday was allegedly the result of roofing repairs underway on a facade on the lot's "New York Alley" section.

According to the County report, the crew maintained a fire watch for one hour after completing hot work on the roof and left for lunch. During that period the fire began and a security guard observed fire and alerted firefighters.

It is speculated that the highly combustible materials of the sets furthered the spread of flames.

Stay tuned.

The Universal Studios fire 20 years ago was arson set by a disgruntled security employee. Now this second fire. This does NOT suprise me at the least. For many years now and Universal was one of the first, the studios have stopped using professional union studio workers changed by now only using outside untrained laborers for many large studio jobs. Those studio facility repair jobs were once the exclusive jobs of the Hollywood labor unions. The studios don't want to pay union professional union family supporting hourly rates and negociated health benefit packages. The studios want to pay way less. This fire was unnecessary and would not have occured with trained union experenced construction professionals on this job. Each union professional goes through several months of OSHA & Studio mandated fire and set safety classes two years ago. Now maybe the studio will regret their short sighted decision to use an non-union 'outside' roofers and day laborers off some street corner. It's too late.
Get smart studio production heads and work union only because it makes sense and has worked safely for decades. Work union, work safe.

Union doesn't make a difference cause lots of union workers are lazy jackasses. And with the midget mayor and his buddies the unions are loaded up with illegals anyway.

If they hire illegals doesn't matter union or not. illegals will do shitty job. They need to force the unions to not hire illegals but now that Tony and his friends run the unions that can't happen. And if they hire private companies instead of the unions better chance to not get illegals these days since they can't get illegals lost to the mexican unions.

Using this tragedy as an opportunity to promote unions is disgraceful. The only benefit I see to the expansion and power of unions are they enrich and coddle union employees. I have yet to see concrete evidence that unions produce a more competent and competitive work force. Instead, I repeatedly witness a culture of entitlement and laziness. The current union status quo as well as civil servants should be highly scrutinized and re-evaluated.

Do the math. There is far less turnover in unionized jobs, and experience and continuity make a difference in work quality, whether you acknowledge it or not.

Those day laborers off street corners - you get what you pay for.

If you want a important industrial roofing safely job done, you want to contract with:
1. experienced licensed union professional crew.
2. unexperienced non-union un-licensed unprofessionals crews.

You won't use union workers!???!
LOL LOL LOL LOL
Right....Reading your post brings the voice of the Simpsons Comic Store Guy into my head.

Foul language and rudeness is a weak man's imitation of strength.

Torching on roofs is shows terrible results of owners poor judgement to allow open flames on buildings. Please push all roofing manufacturers to get away from this type of application. They have and take no responsibilty in pushing these systems and convincing owners that this is a good idea OPEN FLAMES on asphalt materials (petroleum).
