Saturday Hotsheet at 9 a.m.

Joseph Mailander a guy in laelsewhereemail

MayorSam punk icon Joe Barrett's scoop yesterday on stolen hardware and identity outsourcing at the DWP rocks both the Times and the Daily News this morning. DN quotes Nahai as saying that the DWP was taking "extraordinary steps to protect our employees."

By handing over files containing "names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, employee identification numbers, salaries, work locations, deferred compensation balances (but not account numbers), insurance plan coverage and health care benefits selection" to a company not even resident to Los Angeles County.

While others reported every detail incessantly and sometimes dispassionately, and the Mayor crassly tried to make some political hay against media, Will Campbell best captured the humility and solemnity of the farewell to fallen hero Randal Simmons.

Cultural notes: tonight's Jacaranda series at First Presbyterian Church on Second Street features Pictures at an Exhibition and a Tschaikovsky piano trio. The LA Phil also presents Tschaikovsky's Suite No. 3 in an all-Imperial Russian evening that just is begging for a Khachaturian encore.

Here is how my father, a great bartender made the “Ramos” Gin Fizz. By the way my grand-father knew and worked with Mr. Henry C. Ramos, who invented the Gin Fizz drink. My grandfather was a dish-washer at the famous Meyer's Restaurant in New Orleans. Huey P. Long the governor of Louisiana was a regular at Meyer's Restaurant. I have an autographed picture of my grandfather with Huey P. Long.

1 1/2 ounces Dry Gin
1/2 ounce Lemon Juice
1/2 ounce Lime Juice
2 Tbs. Cream
1 Egg White (fresh)
1/4 ounce Seltzer Water
1 Tbs. Powdered Sugar
3 to 4 dashes Orange Flower Water

Shake all ingredients -well- with ice for at least one minute (or in a blender). This should result in a fairly foamy consistency. Strain into a chilled wine glass and top with club soda.

I enjoy this best while listening to The Neville Brothers, great musicians from New Orleans.

Anyone picking up on the story between Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach disagreeing on employee drivers for the clean truck program. Read George Cunninghams report regarding Mayor V's and Mayor Foster's meeting on Thursday.

If V doesn't get his way he may lose all the Teamster votes. He's been promising the unions that he would get all the truckers unionized. Long Beach is truly trying to clean the air. LA is trying to buy votes.

QUICKIE: Clean Truck Concession Plan, Employee Drivers Not Required
02/15/2008

Port of Long Beach commissioners will vote Tuesday on the final elements of the Clean Truck Program. The program as outlined will require any trucking company that wishes to service port terminals to obtain a concession that provides for utilization of environmentally friendly vehicles. It does not, however, require the use of employee-drivers.

Trucking companies - as they do now - would be free to use employee-driver, owner-operators, or a mix of the two.

The employee-driver issue has been the most controversial element of the proposed Clean Truck Program, and one that has divided the two ports, with the Los Angeles Board being in favor of mandating employee drivers and Long Beach being opposed.

It is unclear whether Los Angeles will take the same position as Long Beach when it meets next week. Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster and L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa had what has been described as a contentious meeting on Thursday, but no details of what was discussed are available. The one thing that is abundantly clear, however, is that time is running out if they want to get the Clean Truck Program up and running.

The plan before the Long Beach board also calls for:

• Postponement of the start date for collection of the Clean Truck Cargo Fee from June 1 to Oct 1 to allow time for distribution of RFID tags on trucks and reader installation at terminal.
• Linking up the $35 per TEU clean truck free and the $15 per TEU infrastructure fee to make sure that dirty trucks are replaced before new infrastructure is built with cargo fee dollars.
• A $2 billion financing plan to aid truckers who want to obtain port funding to help buy clean trucks.
• An exemption or partial exemption on the clean truck cargo fee for cargo owners who use clean trucks acquired without port financing.

The port will grant five-year concessions to motor carriers who:

• Pay a one-time application fee of $250 and fees of $100 per truck each year.
• Register their drivers and trucks with the port.
• Meet port "clean truck" standards.
• Use drivers who meet security requirements, including enrollment in the federal Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) program.
• Give preference to drivers who have provided drayage services at the ports
• Provide proof that health insurance will be made available to all drivers
• Ensure that their drivers will comply with on-street parking restrictions and established state and municipal truck routes.
• Agree to scheduled maintenance.
• And tag their vehicles.

The Port will offer one-time help in buying clean trucks with three options for financing - a lease to own option, an up-front grant for purchase, and an up-front grant for retrofit.

JM, I for one think the FBI should be involved in this BS, if they aren't already.
I wonder who is in charge of procurements and the bid process at DWP? And who and when was the contract awarded to Equifax?

It should be public information since it's public moneys involved and if it was a set aside or a no bid emergency reward then I wonder what the emergency funds spending ceiling is?
This shit goes on all the time but these scam and kickback artists never get called on the carpet by anyone cause if you shake the tree hard enough a big peach may fall out of it and hit you in the head, if you know what I mean.

PS Thanks for allowing Jim to post up his recipe for the greatest cocktail ever "Ramos Gin Fizz".
I didn't get a chance to copy it down before it was deleted last time,

Nothing on Ethics Commission for that company as a contributor; the contract was not shown on the File index...must have been done the same as the request for the "Lactation Specialist"

Hey JM I found this at consumer affairs.com, it seems that Equifax has been investigated and fined by the the Federal Govt on more than one occasion.
Equifax is also a consumer credit rating firm so they will have a field day with the info from the employee's at the DWP.
Seems kind of like the old fox in the hen house scenario.

FIRED UP AND FALLING DOWN: String of Crowd Fainting Incidents Hits Obama Rallies.
Los Angeles Times on one of the six recent fainting incidents: "Barack Obama's first and only rally on election day came to a sudden and lengthy stop when a young woman in the Dartmouth College gym fainted, and was eventually rolled off on a gurney by emergency medical technicians. At first Obama half-narrated the episode, saying soothing things like, 'She's OK,' 'She's talking.' But the longer she lay on the floor, the quieter Obama got, standing on the podium, arms folded, looking worried as the medical crew worked."

Yeah Equifax is one of the big three, so I guess that if a corporation is large enough they become immune from any suspicion or oversight huh?
Large = pure,
economy of scale = no need for improper or illegal procedures in the pursuit of profit.

Oh yeah!

I like the Salton Sea!

Of course it stinks from dead fish in the salty, decaying water, tiny shells rip apart your feet if you try to walk, and there are shanties half buried in water. But there are colorful crazies, from rednecks to old draft dodgers and hippies, kind of like on this blog, so you'd feel right at home. Prices are good, too. Even zuma dogg can afford to park his van there.

Now, there's an idea.

The rednecks at the Salton Sea, sitting outside their trailers draped in gigantic flags, sipping cans of Bud with their bellies hanging out of tight little vests, have so far scared off the Latino gangbangers, too. Of course, there's not a lot of nightlife, if you don't count drunken fights, but the air is pretty good.

10:04 AM look at the bigger picture, Mexico is in the works of creating a mega port south of Ensenada, if we are not careful, we may lose many jobs to the Mexican port. The plan is to ship via railroad goods to the United States. We are naive to think that we have the upper card because we are the most important port on the west coast, that could change dramatically if its cheaper to dock in another place close to LA. Our leadership is into politics, not economics. Money rules in this country. Don't be surprised that our ports become a "historic" site in the near future.

6:33 pm,

Great point. A big concern. I spoke with the port expert at SCAG and he claimed that it's not big enough percentage wise to kill off the LA ports...but I tend to think your concern is valid. That's why they are pushing for that "superhighway" so they can deliver the goods through US and to Canada. I have been contacted by port workers who are already concerned about this, and that's how it was brought to my attention.

We already have illegal mexicans crossing all over the country, who is surprised that old polluting trucks with bald tires and bad brakes would be next.

Why not just tun over the keys over to the mexican drug cartels, who will also be using the ports and trucks to ship even more drugs into the country.
