A Guardian Angel laid to rest. The "City of Angels" mourns

This is your thread to opine on today's services for LAPD Officer Randal Simmons.

I would call upon Chief Bratton to create the "Officer Randal Simmons Award" for service On and Off duty in the Community.

May God watch over the Simmons Family as they move forward without a "TRUE ANGELINO HERO".

Thank you to whom ever is responsible for this post

I didn't have a dry eye all day.
Officer Simmon's death is a great tragedy and a huge loss, especially for at risk children he mentored in this community. He was an ourstanding human being and member of our community and has earned our respect. Our politicians should strive to emulate the examples he set for us. He "walked the talk" I challenge everyone to walk in his shoes.

FYI, much what is on this
"outlet" is already printed elsewhere. I thought this was supposed to be an opportunity for people to comment on what's "available everywhere else"

This LAPD officer was an exceptional policeman and human being. The more I read about Officer Simmons, the more I feel for his loss. He was a great, Christian, humanitarian, mentor, father, husband and police officer.

It's is shame he died at the hands of yet another latino gang member which our mexican politicians like Villa-Mugroso, Huizar and Reyes are quick to defend. The mayor, Huizar and Reyes are quck to criticize all the LAPD fine officers like Simmons, but rush to defend Mexican gang-members as victims of society. I hope Officer Simmons can haunt the mexican gang enablers like Villa-Mugroso, Huizar and Reyes.

1:59- I agree, I'm sure the LAPD officers wanted to BARF, when they saw the cholo mayor at Randal Simmons funeral. We all remember that the cholo mayor was against gang injunctions when he was city councilman of a district full of mexican gangs. And let’s not forget his rush to judgment against the LAPD and quit support of all the illegal mexicans after McArthur Park, even doing his press conferences in his lousy spanish. Does the mayor think he is in Tijuana?

I would have loved to kick the Mayor's ass at Randal Simmon’s funeral. I'm sure I would have received a large round of applause and be the first recipient of the distinguished "Office Randal Simmons Award"

R.I.P. – Offficer Randal Simmons – an officer and a gentleman.

10,000 people attended the service and, like you and I, watched. Where were these 10,000 people and the rest of us when the same policemen risked their life for our quality of life and limb in McArthur Park?

The Mayor was defending the "illegal combatants", the "combatant anchor babies" who now run terror in many communities were say "I'm a citizen..you cant deport me" or "Send me to school (at TWIN TOWERS")I learned a lot last time"

The men and woman of the City of LA put their life up for you and me. As Randy said "Give them a smile". I suggest that we smile and waive at every cop we see...love and a better neighborhood can be infectious.

I don't like our Mayor but for one day can we please be more positive on this thread. There are a lot of LAPD officers like Simmons who do a lot in the communities they patrol. Its sad that it takes a funeral to let people know what great officers the LAPD has. Officer Simmons was an incredible man. I hope the media thinks twice when they rush to judgement and print crap about LAPD and become less bias and negative against them. Officer Simmons' funeral showed the world the real side of LAPD and the heroes they have. THe funeral as sad as it was showed Los Angeles pride. God Bless all our officers and stay safe!!

I'm POSITIVE that as long as Los Angeles is a sanctuary city for illegal mexicans, Los Angeles will be known as the gang capital of the world. Have some of the worst performing schools in the country, waste billions on gang programs, have over-crowded jails and have hundreds of homicides a year. Welcome to your sanctuary city, in a few years Los Angeles will be like Tijuana, with mexican drug cartels running the city.

That is what I am POSITIVE about.

If you want to change this City start now to elect a Council and Mayor that will bring this City back to its former grandeur.

Investigate and report of phony "non-proftits" and companies that charge the City 10 times the value of the product of service, remember that the Mayor and Councilmember lie. Its' OUR money. Dont forget about what YOU want in this community and work for it.

Most communities get the government they deserve; especially when they do nothing to make it better.

Danny Garcia, you could've been sitting right next to the mayor and you wouldn't have kicked shit you big baby. I don't like the mayor or half the council, but let's elect people we want. Do you really think most rank and file officers want to keep special order 40?

I have talked too many police officers and most hate the cholo enabling mayor.

11:50: You're an idiot apologist.

Most beat cops, and all the ones on anti-gang duty, want to end SP40 so they can deport illegal criminals. Tney're not only a huge part of the problem and 1/4 of those in Baca's jails, but they're more vicious than the previous, "homegrown" variety of gangbangers.

These vicious creatures from El Salvador especially, where the honed their skills in decades of vicious civil wars, have no limits.

Unlike the "old school" gangsters, they shoot babies, women and kids.

The locals, especially illegals, are so afraid of them they won't rat them out, so SP40 isn't working anyway. It just helps criminals.

The cops plead to get rid of SP40, which endangers them and civilians.

Put on a badge and uniform yourself you brainless idiot, go into their streets, and then lie about how irrelevant illegal gangbangers are.

You must be a staffer for Cardenas or Reyes, always trying to convince us that these lowlifes are "all of our" kids. Bullcrap.

How did this topic morph into the cost and burden of illegal immigration? It was about the murder of an LAPD SWAT officer who was killed by a young American that had guns and serious mental problems. Can we look at that bad combination?

The shooter's father was described as an immigrant from El Salvador, one of those who came illegally and says he got amnesty during the last round. When it was supposed to be the last round until the borders were secured. Too bad he wasn't deported instead at the time.

The shooter was also linked to gangs. Hispanic gangs. With illegal "members." Quite an exclusive club we and the cops can all be thankful for.

Meanwhile a teen riding a bike in Hollywood was shot in the head by confirmed gangbangers yesterday, in the Daily News, and every weekend there are now shootings at Hollywood nightclubs by gangbangers who have moved into that territory, form their "own" hoods south and east.

Soon they'll be in Westwood again, which has already had robberies and attempted abductions of UCLA students just two weeks ago. Then they'll make it to Woodland Hills and and Calabasas.

11:50, tell us where you live since you want them so bad, issue them an invitation. Maybe throw a welcome barbecue, get the illegal gangbangers acquainted with your neighbors, family and friends. Put your effort where you big mouth is.

Today's Daily News article on the burial of the Riveras, says that their funeral expenses have been offset by the Salvadoran Consulate's fund for "expatriates who are victims of crime."

So as expatriates, they may not even be illegal.

The consulate is only giving them a fraction of the money it's costing.

It would obviously have been better for them all and Officer Simmons, if they'd never come here and stayed home in Salvador.

The shooter was known to be trouble for a long time, associating with gangs, and the family couldn't control him. Maybe illegals will stop coming here and expecting America to be the utopia they think. The more of them and their vicious gangsters that have come here and turned "native" American gangs into terrorist organizations with no moral boundaries, the more they've turned our society into a place which swallows them up, too.

Stop spinning it into your own warped racial agenda of intollerance. Can you hold Mexicans to task for all the gang violence in this country and then account for The Aryan Brotherhood, Bloods, Crips, Hoovers, Denver Lanes in the same breath? You're enablers of the vicious gang violence you brought here by making L A into a "sanctuary city" and refusing to deport illegals back home.

And the same should go for any other cultures with vicious gangs, whether they're Vietnamese in Little Saigon, or anyone. There are some of them, but they seem to prey on each other and in their own neighborhoods, they're not an L A problem. If they're illegals or on provisional visas, they should be deported, too.

thank you all that support the fact that this had no gang or race issues towards this tragedy. For those ignorants that do believe so consider the following facts, the killer was an American, yes of Hispanic descent. He had mental problems and he killed his own relatives. As much as you want to believe, you could not have deported an American born here. The problem gets compounded by many immigrants that come to the United States in search for a better life. MOST are poor uneducated farmers from other countries. Place these immigrants in the only housing that they can afford, crowded quarters in the inner city!! Once children of these immigrants are born, there is no guidance to the new life for those that came from abroad. With little or no options, many turn into the gang life. The father of the shooter is one that gained a legal immigration status because the United States allowed amnesty because of the war in El Salvador in the 80's (we are doing the same for Iranians right this moment)so please leave the race and gang issues aside. This was a sick individual that needed help (what race was the shooter in the east coast? what about the Oxnard shooting? Please don't be naive.

Now the real thing, what caused this exceptional SWAT officer his life?, I know Bratton is going to get pissed at me for saying it, but the system in place was inappropriate. The SWAT officers should not have gone into the house as they did. LAPD will have to address this issue. The fact is that officers should not have entered the house without knowing were the shooter was at. He was in a corner were he was able to shoot at the officers in his plain view. LAPD needs to rethink their strategy as the US Army soldiers use different tactics as the one followed by this incident. My thoughts and prayers don't only go to the fallen officer but to those that benefited from his kindness, knowledge, support and guidance. This is not only a loss for the city or our nation, but to those that are so fragile and need the support of this hero!! are you stepping up to assume the role that he played in this community? I did not think so. So shut up and ask your politicians to fund mental health care.

This family are "Salvadoran expatriats" and claimed as such by their government. That's a fact.

This shooter was involved with gangs of Hispanic, and mainly Salvadoran, origin. That's a fact. We don't even know that he was born in America and family members and friends interviewed, speak Spanish, some also broken English. If they were "American" they sure weren't assimilated.

Stop telling us these were typical "Americans" or immigrants, since that's a huge insult to the legal immigrants from all the other parts of the world who don't join gangs and commit crimes: whether Indian, Chinese, Irish or British.

As noted, there are some pockets of gang violence like Little Saigon in Westminster, some in Koreatown, but they don't target not-combatants, or those who aren't involved in their internal turf battles. Same goes for the Armenians and Russians in Hollywood or Glendale.

Stop insulting legal Americans, immigrant and native-born, by dragging them down to the level of those who associate with gangs and commit killings and dangerous crimes.

If you really believed illegals and immigrants from Mexico and Central America don't commit more crime, then you should be in favor of repealing SP40 since it won't affect them, right?

Officer Simmons and all the others have to go out to streets every day that are much more dangerous because of the hardened gangbangers and illegals from Central America, and they are begging us to change it.

As for blaming these crimes on the federal government, the fact is that the Latino politicians and their leftist allies have persuaded the city not to enforce the federal immigration laws, and have declared L A a "sanctuary city" to encourage them to settle here, no questions asked.

Because of this "sanctuary city" declaration, the federal government is giving us less money that it would otherwise for Homeland Security, too. By not enforcing our borders and by encouraging legal immigration, we're making it easier for terrorists to infiltrate, too. The FBI has been monitoring dozens of such groups in the L A area, where there are more of them than anywhere except Detroit. They believe many sleeper cells of Hezbollah have come up through the southern borders, say a number of sources about today's elevated threats from that group.

It's a farce to give American old ladies and babies a hard time at airports when this major loophole goes unchecked.

When the ICE does its job, they're sued by the ACLU like in the Van Nuys case, and attacked by the same bunch of local politicians who have created this problem in L A.

You just sat comfortably enjoying the cheap food picked by illegal immigrants. Now that you know the aftermath you want to back track.

Please don't dishonor the memory of Officer Simmons, as he gave his free time to Blacks and Hispanic. He cared for the ones in need and did not recognize their race.

The one being disresectful is the one who keeps claiming that gangbangers are no more likely to be Hispanic than "American," presumably white.

That is just a lie. There are cases of rightwing whites, of course, some are vicious, but there are a very, very small percentage of immigrants from the rest of the world. It's the Hispanics from Central America and Mexico who are a huge part of the gang problem. The 1/4 filling county jails is just the tip of the iceberg. Yes, there have been black gangs, but the rivalries with the Hispanics, kicking them out of their old turf, has escalated things to a vicious degree. If ICE had done its job and got rid of the illegal father, the whole clan wouldn't have stayed and this wouldn't have happened.

Good for Officer Simmons dealing with at risk youth, but he worked mostly with black kids in South L A who are American born, and haven't gotten their share of resources since being outnumbered by illegals from Central America. Facts are facts and your leftists politicians who try to divert tax funds to your illegals in your districts by calling those who speak the truth and want ICE laws enforced racists, are the racists and insult all of our ancestors who came here legally to work hard and prosper honestly. That goes for the old generation of Hispanics too, who came legally.

Drug violence appears to have chased most of the tourists away, leaving the one-time party mecca a ghost of its former self.
By Richard Marosi, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
1:07 PM PST, February 16, 2008

Tijuana's recent wave of violence appears to have driven another nail into the coffin of a tourism industry already hobbled by its reputation for tacky tourist traps and rowdy bars and by long waits at the U.S.-Mexico border crossing.

Visits are down 90% since 2005, when an estimated 4.5 million came to the area, according to the downtown merchants association. On an average day now, only about 150 tourists show up, the association says. Some encounter the latest Tijuana spectacle: the rumble of convoys full of heavily armed soldiers down Avenida Revolucion.

The odd sight of soldiers next to the mariachi-filled Plaza Santa Cecilia enriched his visit in a culture-clash sort of way, he said, and the military presence certainly made him feel safe.

Still, the negative image hangs over the city. "In reality, the violence isn't targeting tourists. It's between drug traffickers, criminals and police. But the tourist doesn't know the difference," said Victor Clark Alfaro, director of Tijuana's Bi-National Center for Human Rights.

Still, they acknowledge, that's not what Tijuana is famous for these days. It's the bloody battles between police and organized crime that make the headlines.

Since Jan. 1, more than 50 people have been killed across the city, some in wild shootouts that terrified bystanders. Last month, police discovered an organized-crime hide-out near downtown that they said included a training center for hit men complete with a soundproofed basement shooting range.

Downtown has been flooded with police and has been largely free of the violence. No bystanders have been killed in the shootouts.

A crackdown on corrupt transit cops has resulted in fewer reports of extortion, and merchants immediately report officers who stop tourists without reason, according to police.

You're wrong about Iran, Saudi Arabia and Libya. They have strongmen who prevent that stuff, not nice guys and they don't believe in democracy or "multiculturalism," but somehow they wouldn't want the "benefits" of ours.

Seeing this kind of murder and mayhem from gangs who come in here from the south is one reason they look down on us as weak. But you are reduced to the biggest human rights violators in the world, to try to find examples worse than Mexico and Latin America.

The worst "European" cities would have to be in the Ukraine and Russia, but thankfully they're not coming here illegally by the tens of millions.

Again, the shooter was associated with Salvadoran gangs and the family are Salvadoran expatriates, and the father came in illegally. The kids are only "Americans" because of our too-lenient laws about anchor babies.

Since you mention Rwanda, how many of them, truly fearing for their lives, are able to come here illegally and demand legalization by the sheer number of those who came illegally before them?

Besides, estupido, the fact you could find a few worse countries on the map than Mexico or Central America, like Rwanda, doesn't make your point any better.

It proves that not one country or city in Europe is as bad as Latin America. It proves that immigrants from those countries don't come here to kill and murder in large numbers. It proves that you are disrespecting the history of all decent immigrants and the history of this country, like your leader Calderon.

The Iranians you mention are very productive citizens and as far as I've heard, aren't running around in gangs murdering people in the streets.

DING, you're the doubly estupido candidate for Leno's braindead walking All-Stars. Give it up.

Fort Worth woman dies after robbery shooting
By DEANNA BOYDdboyd@star-telegram.com

FORT WORTH — A 19-year-old woman shot in the head Monday night during a robbery died Friday morning from her injuries.

Tawanda Lewis was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m. at John Peter Smith Hospital.

Police have said Lewis and her husband, Michael Davis, 26, were both shot in the head after several men burst into their Emerald Hill apartment in the 8900 block of North Normandale Street, demanding to know where to find the “dope.”

Davis directed the men to a safe in a closet, which the men took before fleeing the apartment. Three men — Larry Wayne Burcham, 39; Mathew Morgan, 22; and Justin Hicks, 20 — were arrested in connection with the shooting. Charges against them are expected to be upgraded to capital murder.

Davis, who suffered non life-threatening injuries, told police that there was no dope in the safe, just pictures of he and his wife. He said he had lied to the suspects as a ruse to get them to leave the apartment.

Lt. Dan Draper, police spokesman, said the department’s intelligence unit have Burcham on file as a member of the Aryan Brotherhood. He said Morgan and Hicks were not included in the unit’s files. Police are still investigating the robbery and shooting but have said it may have been prompted by Davis borrowing Hick’s car, then returning it late.

Keep burying yourself, Cardenas/ Reyes.

And with all the talk about how the Mayor can't say three words in a string, what about Reyes, who puts an emphasis on every single syllable, his bald head bobbing stupidly, as if he's said something important?

10"26 dummy: if you really cared about actual terrorists, you'd care that the borders being left wide open for the charming illegal gangbangers, are also the easiest access route for other "dark" people like terrorists from the Middle East.

The state dept/ Chernoff has confirmed that this has in fact been happening for some time. The posts above include all that, Mr. ADD.

How scary, that the fools with these comments on this blog VOTE.

Who said voting was a "duty?"

There should be an IQ test first, along with some very basic current history, geography and knowing shit from shinola, as well as language.

....the system in place was inappropriate. The SWAT officers should not have gone into the house as they did. The fact is that officers should not have entered the house without knowing were the shooter was at.

WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE SECOND GUESSING THE MOST HIGHLY TRAINED IN THE WORLD SWAT TEAM? ITS EASY FOR YOU TO SIT BACK AND CRITIIZE WITHOUT KNOWING ALL THE FACTS. SWAT OFFICERS BELIEVED THERE WERE STILL PEOPLE IN THE HOUSE ALIVE THE GANG MEMBER WAS HOLDING HOSTAGE. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW THESE OFFICERS THINK. THEY HAVE SAVED THOUSANDS OF LIVES THROUGHOUT THE YEARS. THE BEST THING FOR ALL OF US TO DO IS ENCOURAGE OUR CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS TO GIVE LAPD SPECIALIZED UNITS THE MONEY THEY NEED FOR EQUIPMENT. SADLY, A LOT OF THE MONEY THEY GET IS FROM THE LA POLICE FOUNDATION THAT IS DONATED FROM ORDINARY PEOPLE. HOW SAD IS THAT???

Edwin Rivera, was a high school dropout with a juvenile criminal record who suffered from what authorities called significant mental health problems stemming from his mother's death.
There was no evidence that Edwin Rivera was a gang member, but police had been called to the house five times in one year for minor disturbances.

Gerardo Rivera and his late wife both gained permanent refuge in the United States from El Salvador in the wake of that country's 1980-1992 civil war. Atrocities had driven them out early in the war, and their sons reportedly were born in the United States

Don Bescaulo forgot this ....

and there was also no apparent attempt on the part of the family to extend a healing olive branch to Simmons' family; to Officer James Veenstra, who was shot in the jaw by Edwin Rivera and will require extensive reconstructive surgery; or to two other officers who were also wounded in the Winnetka gunbattle Feb. 7.

There was also a drive-by shooting at the house in August 2006, police said, but no one was injured.

Even Edwin was remembered kindly by friends, who said his nickname was "La Rata" - "The Rat." Some even recalled that he had always gone around armed with a gun after the drive-by shooting.

The agents of Calderon, Cardenas and Reyes and Alarcon, have been busy but lost out in every logical argument.

McCain will win, Obama will go down in flames when the Republicans play up his pandering to illegals, and you are helping McCain with your racist pandering to Hispanics compared to other would-be immigrants and legal residents and citizens struggling to hold onto the American way of life.

The tens of millions of you illegal illiterates coming here have ruined our schools, crashed our trauma centers and now even clinics in LA County, suck up welfare and food stamps, steal Social Security numbers and worst of all, filled our streets with your hardened gangsters you can' control. They suck you, the cops and society down with them.

There is no benefit whatsoever to not enforcing the immigration laws, not even to the illegals themselves. Mexico, Salvador and the rest need to clean up their streets and keep their gangsters and illegals home to fix their own economies.

The U.S. exports gangsters to those countries and all over the world.

Is that John McCain of
McCain/Kennedy we're helping?

Please verify that by "pandering to illegals" we're helping the same John McCain.

John McCain's Republicans are in no position to "play up Obama's pandering to illegals." Sorry, not this time.
