Prioirites

Usually the Los Angeles City Council is preoccupied with things like condemning the war in Iraq and banning offensive words.

Interestingly however they managed to find some time to address an issue that many folks would consider right in the Clowncil's bailiwick - declaring gang violence a top threat.

"We made a promise to the taxpayers that we will have accountability at every level. We need to develop programs that convince young people to do more than say no to drugs. They need to say no to gangs."
Councilman Tony Cardenas

Many of the Council Members said the type of things you would hope they would. Its just that we'd like to able to believe them.

Tony Cardenas also said that "because this is American, they (known hardened gang membered) have a right to be out on our streets," and we have an obligation to turn them back into productive members of society. Sure.

Anyone hear the chink of cash registers here?

However, they are trying to be a lot more reasonable than Connie Rice, who spend close to a million bucks to tell us it will cost at least a billion dollars to make a dent.

Meanwhile, Jeff Carr said he'd been going all over town meeting with differnet groups of people to learn their needs and identify priorities and local leaders they can work with. We;ll see, but at least he's been doing something. There were some other good ideas, too, from gang intervention workers and the cops, but some struck me as bureaucrats.

That idiot Rocky promised to get any gangbanger straighening out a job personally, "the line forms outside my door," he said. Even Janice Hahn was skeptical about that one.

What makes him think he could be a better employment agency than he's been at his job or managing his own household?

Please clowncil members have had a year now to put into action something to resolve the gang issue and NOTHING to date. Jeff Carr has no qualifications to be a gang Czar and thinks praying for gang members will help them turn around. The gang issue is a community problem not law enforcement. Why hasn't one person said anything about parenting those idiots? If they had better parenting skills and disciplined their kids we wouldn't have gang violence.

TONY, CRIMINAL GANGS NEED TO BE CRUSHED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT.

We need to repeal special order 40 and start mass deportations. Approximately 25% of the people in jail are illegal aliens. We should deport the midget mayor first, then Huizar and Reyes. These clowns are allowing the city to turn into a crime ridden copy of Tijuana.

Remember the killing of the baby on 6th street in Westlake. Reyes and Villaraigosa said they were going to get rid of the illegal street vendors, but they are still there. Well now all the illegal street vendors are back in full force again.

The Bush administration has sold out our country to big corporations and companies trying to find cheap labor. Just read the post by Joe M., which reports on how millions of illegals entered the country during Bush's presidency.

The federal government is just as corrupt as our local mechista mayor.

Why no comments from Mayor Sam's minutemen about George Bush allowing millions of illegal aliens into the country?

I always read about the mechista mayor and the sanctuary city. What about the Buffoon Bush and the sanctuary country?

We've been hammering Bush since the mechista mayor was promising to be CD14 clowncilman.

Instead of posting stupid comments, you should instead defend what your buddy the mechista (and Bush) are doing to America.

Didn't think so.

Mayor Sam, don't hammer LAUSD until you show a grasp of basic english yourself.

The moron clowncil members should stop speaking spanish to all the illegals and help them assimilate into our society. Most baby boomers Latinos all speak English as their main language. Ask any Latino senior citizen 60 and over and they will tell you it is with respect to this country they learned how to speak English.

Immigrants' children grow fluent in English, study saysLatinos recognize that learning English is key to economic success, according to the study, which was based on survey data collected between 2002 and 2007.

...."The ability to speak English is a crucial skill for getting a good job and integrating into the wider society," said D'Vera Cohn, a senior writer at the research center, a nonpartisan research organization that does not advocate immigration policy. "Language is a vehicle for assimilation

Since we are talking about City Clowncil, I got this email from LaBonge's office.

Anyone else find having www.tomlabonge.com as "our new Council District 4 web site" (their words) somewhat self-important and unseemly?

Did they hire Jason Lyon?

Subject: Councilmember LaBonge's Weekly Update: BIG NEWS!

Greetings, everyone, on a rainy Friday.

Today's a big day at CD4 as we publicly launch our new Council District 4 website: www.tomlabonge.com

From now on, you'll be able to get up-to-the minute news and notices about goings-on in the district from www.tomlabonge.com
Instead of having to wait until Friday to get our newsletter, we'll be posting updates throughout the week to our website.

The CD4 site has several new features we hope will be useful to you and others--separated by tabbed sections:
News & Events -- Councilmember LaBonge's latest initiative, project or event attended;
CD4 Projects -- Major public improvements in the works and their current status;
Interactive Maps -- Detailed maps showing various public resources, neighborhood facts, landmarks, etc.; Photo Gallery -- Flickr-hosted gallery of CD4 photos you can download; Biography -- Councilmember LaBonge's life story with photos; Contact Us -- A convenient way to e-mail us with questions about city resources or other constituent-related matters;
City Links -- Ways to request various city services via the Internet.

We have put a lot of thought and energy into this new design and expect to make improvements and add more helpful links and information as we go along.

Please let us know what you think. You can e-mail your thoughts back to this address, or directly to Jane Galbraith, who edits and maintains the website at: jane.galbraith@lacity.org

Let's continue to enjoy and love the great City of Los Angeles!
Enjoy your weekend!

Mayor Sam, thanks for keeping Red Spot busy and having him write the headlines. This one was particularly well done.

What are Priorites, speaking of excellent headlines?

I think the entire Los Angeles City Council should make a symbolic list of things to "just say no" to.

How about some new nonprofit programs:

More books, less crooks.
More hugs, less thugs.
Less drive-thru, more healthy food.

The Simpsonized council photo should be placed directly behind Garcetti which would be a nice addition to the chamber.
