Is former Mayor Jim Hahn considering a run to take back the office he lost in 2005 to Antonio Villaraigosa? We speculated this back in July. This time it's LAist who has been served with a search warrant by the City of Beverly Hills over some story about a bicyclist who was attacked by an SUV driver in Beverly Hills. No, the police don't want to investigate the attack on the bike rider but some comments that are supposedly tied into an email threat made against a police officer.
Nanny state politics are reaching an all time new high in our land. Lloyd "the Bachelor" Levine is at it again using government to force you to use certain light bulbs.
Bachelor Funnies Part Two: Backstabbing Lloyd is supporting efforts to micro-stamp bullets in order to erase gang violence. Now I know a number of you are going to go apoplectic and say "Mayor Sam how can you oppose such legislation?" Very simple: "When non-microstamped bullets are outlawed only outlaws will have microstamped bullets." No, that's not just a cliche but common sense. Gangs can afford to get black market unstamped bullets. And of course Little Lloyd won't tell you that the technology is unproven. So its a total waste of time.
In the meantime while Lloyd is trying to figure out ways to outlaw light bulbs and bullets, the folks in Venice are having mental breakdowns about the possibility of a Starbucks opening up. I don't get it. If you don't like them - DON'T SHOP THERE!

What are the Republicans going to do for this next Mayor's election in 2009? Walter Moore is no longer in the GOP thanks due to the shabby treatment that he received from the L.A. County GOP Chairmen Doug and Linda Boyd. Former Assemblyman Dr. Keith Richman is electable as shown in his majority vote for Mayor of the San Fernando Valley during the failed San Fernando Valley secession campaign. Bill Simon has the money. Steve Soboroff could be another possibility if he can be lured away from Playa Vista. Or will Doug and Linda Boyd of the L.A. County GOP decide who the best candidate is based upon who offers them a $10,000 a month consulting contract as Mayor Hahn did for Mr. Boyd in the 2005 election?
What is really shocking is that Republicans aren't even fielding a candidate for the 2nd District Board of Supervisors seat being vacated by Yvonne Braithwaite Burke. According to a recent post by former California GOP Chairman Shawn Steel, the L.A. County Lincoln Clubs, a group set-up to support Republican candidates for partisan and non-partisan offices, backed Burke when she ran against Diane Watson.

This is the same group whose board unanimously endorsed Hahn's re-election for Mayor. And their treasurer Doug Boyd magically has a consulting contract for the Hahn campaign to organize a "GOP for the Mayor" effort that failed miserably.
Isn't it sad that some of the same Republicans who are critical of Governor Schwarzenegger's political philosophy of not being Republican enough then turnaround and support Democrat candidates? Shawn Steel is loving Bernard Parks for the Board of Supervisors to replace the retiring Burke. Parks is a Democrat.
Speaking of Maxine Waters, she probably will endorse a Parks run for Supervisor. Wouldn't this put Shawn Steel and company on the same side of Maxine Waters in supporting Parks for Supervisor? Politics does indeed make strange bedfellows. Shawn, don't climb into bed with Maxine! Nighty night!

They have now cost both organizations well more than the $35,000 as I and lots of others dropped out and will never again contribute unless and until they either give the $35,000 to the County Central Committee or the Lincoln Clubs, or they are gone from both.
His accepting the money from the Hahn campaign is the political equivalent of whoring.

City hall has nothing but a bunch of low lifes inside now and a field staffer said "its like visiting TJ." This is actually one of your weakest comments Jack. Any functionally reasoning person can see the folly in this proposal and its basically feel good pablum for certain politicians (including one who never met a cause he didn't like) to throw back at us at election time to let us know they're doing something about "gang violence."
First off, as I said, the tecnhology is far from proven. Secondly, again, gangs don't buy legal weapons, they don't register their guns, they don't follow the gun laws we have, etc. They will have no problems getting guns without the engraving feature.
If you want to really do something about gangs (and I gather most politicians don't) there are a few other places to start. One is by holding kids and parents responsible, instill discipline at an early age not letting kids do what they "feel" they want to do, get schools back on track educating them about academics and not bullshit like cross-cultural multi-cultural hoo-haw, etc., etc., etc. Take the kids who act up in school and put them in special/reform whatever you want to call it schools where they get their ass kicked for misbehaving and they will begin to learn some respect for themselves and others.
The other thing you need to do is to seriously start deporting criminal illegal aliens. But we can't do that right?
So honestly Jack, your gun schemes are completely pointless, useless and will result in no net reduction in gang crime & violence.

Microstamping is a pipe dream. Not only is the technology unproven, it does not currently exist. It's like creating a law requiring that all guns being sold must have technology that makes them not hurt good guys. If the law passes, it will likely get struck down by the courts as it is really a gun ban. The way the Supreme Court is looking now, with the likelihood of them ruling on the DC gun ban, California gun ownership restrictions might be in for an overhaul. Which will not affect the way criminals already arm themselves, just law abiding citizens. Last time I checked, criminals and illegal aliens were not allowed to legally purchase firearms.
California law, more specifically, Los Angeles law is a joke. This town is populated by people who KNOW the law does not apply to them - celebrities, very rich people, politically connected people (I will take this opportunity to give a shoutout the most entertaining City Attorney in LA history), illegal aliens, and criminals. In fact, those groups may outnumber regular old law abiding citizens. As much as I respect the LAPD, I trust my safety to my alarm system and the .45 in my nightstand.
Do Levine and his ilk live in the same Los Angeles that I do? Aren't there laws against breaking into cars, stealing, assault and murder? Just to be clear, the proposed "micro stamping" would stamp the cartridge case, not the bullet.
If the shooters are organized enough to pick up their brass, no evidence. The concern about dumping brass from another gun(s) at the scene is real as well.
This would only drive up the price of used guns and/or make their theft even more attractive. There are enough guns in circulation already to allow the murder rate to continue unabated for about a century.

I hate Starbucks because it does have a "culture" it tries to foist on people, it's not just a place to get coffee. For example, their handbook tells franchisees in Asia, where the customer is used to being addressed more formally and vice versa towards the waitstaff, to use first names with their customers and to refer themselves that way. And be friendly and open, all stuff which goes against the grain of Asian culture, and I think shows a really sucky side of American lower class, no class, "culture," the kind that leads at its lowest to a zuma dogg. Not what we need to export.
In Venice's funky Abbot Kinney area, these are not the concerns of course -- maybe Starbucks is too preppy and polished for them. In any case, they don't fit every community.
