Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Tuesday

Is former Mayor Jim Hahn considering a run to take back the office he lost in 2005 to Antonio Villaraigosa? We speculated this back in July. Could there be very quiet rumblings to stage the LA comeback of the century? Could he be the Grover Cleveland of LA politics? Stay tuned.

Yet another example of blogs being harassed. This time it's LAist who has been served with a search warrant by the City of Beverly Hills over some story about a bicyclist who was attacked by an SUV driver in Beverly Hills. No, the police don't want to investigate the attack on the bike rider but some comments that are supposedly tied into an email threat made against a police officer.

Nanny state politics are reaching an all time new high in our land. Lloyd "the Bachelor" Levine is at it again using government to force you to use certain light bulbs.

Bachelor Funnies Part Two: Backstabbing Lloyd is supporting efforts to micro-stamp bullets in order to erase gang violence. Now I know a number of you are going to go apoplectic and say "Mayor Sam how can you oppose such legislation?" Very simple: "When non-microstamped bullets are outlawed only outlaws will have microstamped bullets." No, that's not just a cliche but common sense. Gangs can afford to get black market unstamped bullets. And of course Little Lloyd won't tell you that the technology is unproven. So its a total waste of time.

In the meantime while Lloyd is trying to figure out ways to outlaw light bulbs and bullets, the folks in Venice are having mental breakdowns about the possibility of a Starbucks opening up. I don't get it. If you don't like them - DON'T SHOP THERE!

There is no way that Jim Hahn can come back from the political graveyard unless Maxine Waters drops her support for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Hell hasn't frozen over yet.

Maybe Jimmy can move to Yvonne Burke's condo in Mar Vista and then run for his daddy's old seat on the Board of Supes? Maxine Waters will probably torpedo that campaign, too.

What are the Republicans going to do for this next Mayor's election in 2009? Walter Moore is no longer in the GOP thanks due to the shabby treatment that he received from the L.A. County GOP Chairmen Doug and Linda Boyd. Former Assemblyman Dr. Keith Richman is electable as shown in his majority vote for Mayor of the San Fernando Valley during the failed San Fernando Valley secession campaign. Bill Simon has the money. Steve Soboroff could be another possibility if he can be lured away from Playa Vista. Or will Doug and Linda Boyd of the L.A. County GOP decide who the best candidate is based upon who offers them a $10,000 a month consulting contract as Mayor Hahn did for Mr. Boyd in the 2005 election?

What is really shocking is that Republicans aren't even fielding a candidate for the 2nd District Board of Supervisors seat being vacated by Yvonne Braithwaite Burke. According to a recent post by former California GOP Chairman Shawn Steel, the L.A. County Lincoln Clubs, a group set-up to support Republican candidates for partisan and non-partisan offices, backed Burke when she ran against Diane Watson.
http://www.flashreport.org/blog0a.php?postID=2007082519100673&post_offsetP=0&authID=2006111814413741

This is the same group whose board unanimously endorsed Hahn's re-election for Mayor. And their treasurer Doug Boyd magically has a consulting contract for the Hahn campaign to organize a "GOP for the Mayor" effort that failed miserably.

Isn't it sad that some of the same Republicans who are critical of Governor Schwarzenegger's political philosophy of not being Republican enough then turnaround and support Democrat candidates? Shawn Steel is loving Bernard Parks for the Board of Supervisors to replace the retiring Burke. Parks is a Democrat.

Speaking of Maxine Waters, she probably will endorse a Parks run for Supervisor. Wouldn't this put Shawn Steel and company on the same side of Maxine Waters in supporting Parks for Supervisor? Politics does indeed make strange bedfellows. Shawn, don't climb into bed with Maxine! Nighty night!

No, no, I'm pretty sure that's still just a cliche, Mayor Sam.

Bratton is on the Leg record as SUPPORT (individual). City of L.A. also supports.

From Leg Analysis --

"...AB 1471 would help reduce trafficking of new semi-automatic handguns by creating accountability. Legal purchasers who buy guns for traffickers ('straw' buyers), will be deterred when they realize that microstamped casings can be traced directly back to them. Consequently, this big source of crime guns, which rapidly fall into the hands of criminals and gang members, would be disrupted. Curbing the flow of illegal guns to prohibited purchasers, including felons and violent teens, would reduce gun violence in our streets..."

For @$35,000, they delivered those endorsements to a loser Jimmy Hahn.

They have now cost both organizations well more than the $35,000 as I and lots of others dropped out and will never again contribute unless and until they either give the $35,000 to the County Central Committee or the Lincoln Clubs, or they are gone from both.

His accepting the money from the Hahn campaign is the political equivalent of whoring.

Rumor is everyone is trying to keep the other women Antonio's been with during his affair for 18 months with Mirthala away from the press. AV can't afford another scandal. Jack M. Hoff -

WOW! You've not only convinced me with the endorsment of Bill "If you don't like it leave the state" Bratton and that brilliant report by the legislative analyst. My lord, what was I thinking! And to top it off THE LA CITY COUNCIL has endorsed the bill too (I wonder if they read it?)

Jack M. Hoff I've got to hand it to you. If geniuses such as Bill Bratton, the Legislative Analyst and that brain trust known as the City Council of Los Angeles think this is such a neat idea, gosh, I should join the bandwagon.

NOT.

This is actually one of your weakest comments Jack. Any functionally reasoning person can see the folly in this proposal and its basically feel good pablum for certain politicians (including one who never met a cause he didn't like) to throw back at us at election time to let us know they're doing something about "gang violence."

First off, as I said, the tecnhology is far from proven. Secondly, again, gangs don't buy legal weapons, they don't register their guns, they don't follow the gun laws we have, etc. They will have no problems getting guns without the engraving feature.

If you want to really do something about gangs (and I gather most politicians don't) there are a few other places to start. One is by holding kids and parents responsible, instill discipline at an early age not letting kids do what they "feel" they want to do, get schools back on track educating them about academics and not bullshit like cross-cultural multi-cultural hoo-haw, etc., etc., etc. Take the kids who act up in school and put them in special/reform whatever you want to call it schools where they get their ass kicked for misbehaving and they will begin to learn some respect for themselves and others.

The other thing you need to do is to seriously start deporting criminal illegal aliens. But we can't do that right?

So honestly Jack, your gun schemes are completely pointless, useless and will result in no net reduction in gang crime & violence.

However if you, Bill Bratton, the fifteen geniuses around the horseshoe and any other major critical thinkers you can gather up want to continue to jack off your brains on dumb ideas like this, be my guest. You can even do it on my blog.

It's nice to see that Jack M. Hoff is not the only dumbass on this blog.

Yes, we know its the gun that stamps the bullet.

And the reason I mentioned Levine is because he's the grandstander who sent over the press release on the bill (among other things), not Feuer.

Feuer is probably a nice guy and well meaning, but a misguided liberal. Lloyd on the other hand is a well known backstabbing piece of shit who amounts to not much more than an empty suit.

Perhaps Mike should be more concerned that Lloyd - whose campaign against Fran Pavley for state senate is in deep trouble - is trying to ride his coattails than whether or not he gets any credit on Mayor Sam.

From Wikipedia:

With $0.25 worth of sandpaper, it would be possible for criminals to deface intentionally the surface of the firing pin in a matter of seconds to remove any identifying marks, which would require a microscope to verify had been done. All of these issues pose serious problems which would have to be overcome were the technique to be required by law.

It would also be possible for someone planning a criminal act to obtain fired casings with markings from a shooting range, for planting at the scene of a planned crime, erroneously linking unrelated gun owners to the crime scene to introduce doubt in any subsequent jury trial. As not all bullets recovered from crime scenes are intact, which can prevent matching striations, this twist would introduce considerable confusion in processing and prosecuting criminal cases at the expense of innocent individuals.

When incandescent lightbulbs are outlawed, only outlaws will have incandescent light bulbs.

Microstamping is a pipe dream. Not only is the technology unproven, it does not currently exist. It's like creating a law requiring that all guns being sold must have technology that makes them not hurt good guys. If the law passes, it will likely get struck down by the courts as it is really a gun ban. The way the Supreme Court is looking now, with the likelihood of them ruling on the DC gun ban, California gun ownership restrictions might be in for an overhaul. Which will not affect the way criminals already arm themselves, just law abiding citizens. Last time I checked, criminals and illegal aliens were not allowed to legally purchase firearms.

California law, more specifically, Los Angeles law is a joke. This town is populated by people who KNOW the law does not apply to them - celebrities, very rich people, politically connected people (I will take this opportunity to give a shoutout the most entertaining City Attorney in LA history), illegal aliens, and criminals. In fact, those groups may outnumber regular old law abiding citizens. As much as I respect the LAPD, I trust my safety to my alarm system and the .45 in my nightstand.

Do Levine and his ilk live in the same Los Angeles that I do? Aren't there laws against breaking into cars, stealing, assault and murder? How come cars are broken into every night in the neighborhood of million dollar homes I live in? Maybe we should pass more laws, that would fix it. All of those drug laws have worked out really well.

Just to be clear, the proposed "micro stamping" would stamp the cartridge case, not the bullet.

If the shooters are organized enough to pick up their brass, no evidence. The concern about dumping brass from another gun(s) at the scene is real as well.

This would only drive up the price of used guns and/or make their theft even more attractive. There are enough guns in circulation already to allow the murder rate to continue unabated for about a century.

Of course you hate the "Clowncil" because they like every other body or individual more interested in serious business than retarded clowning, don't pay attention to the chief village idiot, but now to add the most respected man in the whole country when it comes to preventing terrorist attacks into the mix of who you hate, is beyond any reason and just sad, sad, sad.

Has it ever occurred to your that the Chief answers to the electeds, and must enforce the laws, whether or not he personally approves?

Too bad, because if it weren't for your making your entire observation irrelevant, I'd agree with parts of it: that getting rid of SP40 and tough-love with budding gangsters is better than trying to turn them around, whether through Jesus or the Dalai Lama or new age crystals.

Because I've worked with some gang prevention programs, and found that these guys are truly incorrigible. Even when given a chance to move away, they don't-- they like the power, both over their peers and over the society they terrorize.

Weiss ASs is being recalled for being a dumb ass, Zine is the biggest womanizer and weirdo who makes no sense and flip flops, Smith is still sleeping, Hahn is the bimbo of the bunch and wants to give more money so gang bangers can abuse and give to their family members and tax us to get it, Reyes has the filtyiess district with trash, illegals, illegal vendors, Huizar caters to illegals but does nothing about drugs, graffitti, gangs, illegal vendors, blight, in his district. Alarcon got caught being sneaky trying to help his lil new wife, Bitter Bernie still needs therapy and wants to run LAPD, and the list goes on and on. Mayor Sam,

I wanted to give you a few hours to find your blood pressure medicine before responding to your thoughtful comments. I'm sure it's in the same place it always is; in the medicine chest next to the Metamucil.

My take on the proposed gun law is ANY advantage we can give the cops, I'm all for. ANYTHING that makes a weapon MORE traceable, I'm all for. Count me in.

Come on, not every criminal is the mastermind you and the extremist fear-mongers (*coughs* "KFI") try to make them out to be.

With a police force that is still 2,000 to 3,000 short on the street, your NRA rhetoric wears pretty thin when you advocate LAPD wasting man hours trying to trace bullets and weapons "the old fashioned way" instead of assisting/modernizing evidence collection, tracing a gun owner and getting cops back out on the street where they belong.

“Yeah, but they might need a microscope!” is your argument? Hoo boy.

I'm not a lawyer. (Remember, I only have a third grade education and was dropped on my head a lot as a child.) But it seems to this pea-brain that any criminal who takes the time to sand out or disable microstamped markings is testifying to their own intent.

Maybe somebody will post the difference between manslaughter and murder.

As far as Bratton's support goes...hell, I dunno. I'm not the guy who put a huge dent in crime stats in the two biggest cities in the country. He’s gotta have some reason.

As to the City Council, again, maybe it’s just me, but I thought Parks and Zine were ex-cops and Smith is an LAPD reserve. Yet you want to call them a bunch of inexperienced, unknowledgeable fools and buffoons; be my guest! But brother, that’s outside of my comfort zone.

Give the cops a shot -- and I don't mean in the back. Level the playing field a little bit more in favor of the good guys. The technology works, it’s not expensive and it’s more efficient than what we got now.

I hate Starbucks because it does have a "culture" it tries to foist on people, it's not just a place to get coffee. For example, their handbook tells franchisees in Asia, where the customer is used to being addressed more formally and vice versa towards the waitstaff, to use first names with their customers and to refer themselves that way. And be friendly and open, all stuff which goes against the grain of Asian culture, and I think shows a really sucky side of American lower class, no class, "culture," the kind that leads at its lowest to a zuma dogg. Not what we need to export.

In Venice's funky Abbot Kinney area, these are not the concerns of course -- maybe Starbucks is too preppy and polished for them. In any case, they don't fit every community.
