Hahn redux: former mayor flirting with another run?

Is Jim Hahn laying the groundwork to star in the sequel voters denied him just two years ago? Word on the street is, at least one recent policy speech definitely crossed the line.

Friday marked the latest installment of Pancakes & Politics, a monthly Chamber-hosted powwow of business and government bigwigs.

Under the banner, Ready for Takeoff? The Case for the Modernization of LAX, the gathering of top-tier members heard from, among others, Deputy Mayor Jamie de la Vega and LAWA Board President Alan Rothenberg.

Though his name didn't appear on the published list of speakers, an eye-witness source tells the Sister City that Jim Hahn also addressed the group on the subject of airport modernization, delivering what could have easily been misconstrued as a stump speech.

In the land of short memories and continual reinvention, anything is possible. Let’s watch for continued signs of an effort on the part of the former mayor to raise his profile in the coming months.

Perhaps he’s simply hedging his bets, or perhaps our “Average Jim” is already convinced that by 2009, circus-weary Angelenos might just welcome, if nothing else, a return to normalcy.

Clearly ALL the Mexican agents MUST be cleared from ALL elective offices and appointments at ALL levels of government - this is just one office that is and will be overripe for clean out - there are far more than enough toilet brushes at City Hall to assist in the work locally in Los Angeles... I suppose it is not too early for any potential candidates to begin preparations.

BIG LOVE ALERT!!

Apparently ERS News has dug up the possible LAPD "girlfriend" on the security detail of the Big Chihuahua!! (EEeeeeeooooowwww!!! Was SHE one of the security detail hanging outside while Villar was schtupping the "reporter"? Contemplate THAT one! This guy is really creepy!)

From ERS News:

ERSNews has been investigating the alleged relationship of Mayor Villaraigosa and a female member of his LAPD security detail. The officer, who ERS/The Enterprise Report can reveal exclusively is 14-year LAPD veteran Anita Moreno, works on the Mayor's protective security detail provided by the LAPD. Officer Moreno has previously worked for the LAPD’s Pacific Division and also for the training division of the LAPD over her long law enforcement career.

According to multiple sources, the mayor has had a relationship with officer Moreno of some kind. The exact nature of that relationship is still unknown.

ERS sought comment from the LAPD, The Mayor’s office and directly from Ms. Moreno herself concerning any personal relationship she has had or does have with Mayor Villaraigosa. Prior to the publication of this report there was no response back to inquiries made by ERSNews from any of the contacted parties.

ERSNews has also confirmed that Officer Moreno has previously worked on the Mayor’s security detail dating as far back as late 2005. She is officially assigned to Chief Bratton’s office. According to the Chief's office she is currently “on loan” to the Mayor’s office and ERSNews has confirmed she was working on the Mayor’s security detail as recent as today (7/20/07).

Two weeks ago, on July 3, 2007, Mayor Villaraigosa revealed that he had a personal relationship with Telemundo anchor/political reporter Mirthala Salinas. That revelation set off a firestorm of media coverage over the past two weeks. In addition to the questions about the Mayor’s personal life, his relationship with Telemundo journalist Salinas raised serious issues of journalistic ethics, favoritism and special access for Ms. Salinas and her employers at Telemundo/NBC.

According to multiple sources including sources familiar with the LAPD just how Officer Moreno became assigned to the mayor is not entirety clear and the LAPD nor the Mayor’s office would comment on the process by which Officer Moreno was assigned the Mayor’s security team citing a blanket policy against commenting on issues related to the Mayor and his protection.

The standard practice is for the officers assigned to the Mayor to be members of the LAPD Metro Squad. Once on the squad they go though special training at the Los Angeles Police Department Academy. There, they learn techniques in protection of individuals such at the Mayor. The training is so complete that other police departments send people there for the training.

Feature about Salinas' future in the balance, LAT. Too bad, sounds like a hard-scrabble girl b. Mexico, career cut short. Never finished state college, started working at 17; seems part of her problem is, newscasters are chosen for their looks and being "tough" (as admitted by her earlier bosses), vs. maturity and depth and any real readiness for the real world. That is fault of employers, the values placed on journalism.

Maybe she can go back to school and finish her degree, start over when she's really mature.

You guys are really something.

Jimmy Hahn couild not pass the mirror test. He's still a nice guy, but he has as much chance of being elected to anything as ZD does; slim and none, and you know what happened to Slim.

Nope, face it sports fans, Mayor Villaraigosa will be reelected because there is no viable candidate who can raise the money who will take him on. He still has his base and it will take a major player, with a base of their own to beat him.

Jimmy Hahn's base is either already indicted or awaiting completion of the investigation. Just like last time around, he's still seen as a loser and no one would invest a penny in him.

You haters better look for another White Knight, but hurry, because with about two years to go, the election derby really starts next January.

As Bill Clinton has taught us, it'll take more than a roll with a bimbo to beat a strong player like Antonio.

9:302: Well, we have Riordan, Eli Broad and the others behind downtown, giving AV his financial advice, and he's listening. So he may not have the business background, but his team is a lot more solid than Hahn's ultra - liberal spendthrift one oculd be: he'd be all about pouring money only into the inner cities for programs that don't work, infrastructure that doesn't create wealth (yes, like his sister is now), leftover stuff from the eighties, different economic times.

Remember, it's not just about AV himself, but the fact that he's a team builder, accepts and solicits advice from the industrial titans; he hasn't been caving in to the illegals as much as they'd wanted.

And I think after this, where the working-class, uneducated Hispanics (including many illegals) have been his worst critics, he'll lean in the mainstream direction even more.

Yes, call him a cholo if you want, but he's nothing if not a scrappy, pragmatic survivor and hard worker.

He cried over Sp 40, the bill telling cops not to q illegals about their status? How so? Upset that people would q why it was a needed tool, or what? How could that make anyone so upset? Must have been something else like awareness he was losing, even though he did all the right things, like trying to appease "antonio's" Mexicans, and "they still don't like me."

Sounds like he just has insecurity issues, definitely not tough enough for the way things have gotten now, the tabloid trashing AV has taken.

Not that I think all this is a good direction: we're going to see the worst kind of candidates running, the rest will shun the race. Who needs this for around 200K, whose family wants to go through this?
Either really rich like Arnold and Maria -- and they're the ones who get away with raising millions in charity to help defray travel by private jet, taking over a floor of the hotel, etc. -- this AV stuff is nickel-and-dime, like did security detail hang outside his door. (I'd say yes, security is 24/7, they're not at liberty to decide what he does on his off time, nor are we.)

UNLESS it conflicts w/ job, as in this Salinas case.

7:25, you got it all wrong. The role of the mayor isn't to fix such problems himself - that's for the bureacrats and lower-level city employees to do. Villaraigosa's job is to INSPIRE - to show up at, say, a Ralphs Fresh Fare opening downtown or a press conference for a new, famous member of the local soccer team, and give a BIG SMILE and maybe sign an autograph or two. In other words, the IMPORTANT stuff - not the trivial, laborious work that could compromise his ability to make Angelenos just feel good about their city.

BIG LOVE SUNDAY UPDATE AT LUKE FORD:

Eric Longabardi Says On KABC Radio That The Mayor Specifically Requested Latina Security
By Luke Ford |

During the 5 p.m. show, Eric says the mayor specifically requested that women on his security detail be latina.

Attractive latina Anita Moreno skipped the normal process to get on the mayor’s security detail, says Longabardi, presumably upon the request of the mayor.

Eric: "The attitude within the Spanish-language media is that Villaraigosa is their guy. He’s on their team. The slack they give him is over the line… They give journalistic heads-up way out of line…telling him in advance of questions so he doesn’t get side-swiped."

Antonio’s Spanish-language TV show on Univision is called "On Your Side."

Longabardi suggests that Mirthala Salinas got her publicist from the mayor.
