Jan Perry With a Whopper of a Dumb Idea

Pretty soon in Los Angeles and the rest of California you will need government to make sure you cut off your pets' private parts, change your lightbulbs, bag your groceries correctly, etc.

And luckily we have the patron saint of the Nanny State, Lloyd Levine to keep us safe.

Joining the ranks now is the Los Angeles City Council. Yes just when you think that Jack Hoff's favorite group of critical thinkers couldn't top themselves - they do it again.

They want to ban fast food restaurants in South Central.

Why? Most likely - as reported by the Fox Network's John Gibson - is that "...the L.A. city council thinks Latinos and Blacks are too fat, and they're thinking of doing something about it."

"The L.A. city council thinks Latinos and Blacks are too fat, and they're thinking of doing something about it."

According to Councilwoman Jan Perry there are way too many fast food restaurants in South Central - and "The people don't want them," though the people sure eat there a lot.

Besides the patently absurd notion behind this feel good legislation there is the bigger issue of how do you enforce it? What is considered fast food and what isn't? Its just absolutely silly and no intellectually honest person with can offer a good reason with a straight face.

See it works this way people. In life we have choices. We make choices and we face the consequences of those choices.

If you eat a lot of most of the food they serve at fast food joints - you will probably be unhealthy and gain weight.

On the other hand you can make a decision to be healthy, eat and be well. Maybe its not easy if there are a lot of fast food places in your town. But practically every fast food outlet around these days - responding to the market - offers healthy choices and many of those are on the "value menu."

I speak from experience. In one year I've lost 170 pounds. Not by fad diets, not by surgeries or pills or anything else. It came from making appropriate choices.

I did not need Jan Perry, Lloyd Levine, George Bush or any government official to make that happen for me.

Let's hope this absurdity ends soon.

Hey, are you dissing George Bush?
President Bush has never tried to regulate fast food, don't even try to blame him for that! He supports free market fast food especially in neighborhoods not near his.
The 170 pounds you lost cost patriotic fast food restaurants millions! You should be ashamed you Leftist Tree Hugger!

This is like a Perfect Storm of Absurd Public Policy! It's a Category 5!

Funny title, right on content. Let's not let it end too soon, please.

My only suggestion would be that Ms. Perry, instead of working through the Planning Dept. to get stakeholders to lose weight ("menu" planning could be helpful, tho) should work through the Transportation Dept. and simply ban all cars, bikes and buses from district streets, forcing everyone to walk everywhere all the time.

Post some "Zine Signs" that say "Weight Loss City."

At the end-of-the-year District Weigh In, the biggest loser could get a Chevy.

Sounds good to me. I could stand to lose about 20.

This woman is Jan Perry. She is a councilwoman for the city of Los Angeles, and according to her, people are too fat. Kind of the pot calling the kettle black, but regardless, she's taking the "progressive" view that in a free country like America, there's only one way to get people to take care of themselves: make more laws.

So in her first order of business, she wants to ban the creation of any and all fast-food restaurants in her district. According to her, people don't want to eat this stuff, but they "have to" because it's the only thing around. Obviously, no one pointed out the existence of grocery stores to her. And I guess in her opinion, lower income families are too stupid to make their own food. Which I find hilarious, because why on earth a black woman would insinuate that her district of mostly-minority individuals are too dumb to make good decisions is beyond me. But somehow that's the prevailing liberal mindset about personal choice. We're not smart enough to make our own decisions, and if we make bad ones it's because someone else forced us to.

Perry: "No. People are too stupid to know which foods aren't good for them."

I don't have a problem with the City helping us make better food choices. If we still want to pig out, we can make our own greasy burger and fries or order it at a regular restaurant.

When I'm trying to eat healthy and I'm on the run, I'm thankful that there are places like this where I can a salad or a grilled chicken sandwich. Seems to me the "honorable" Jan Perry wants to ensure that the City limits its collection of City taxes by eliminating these "too many" fast-food joints. The City reserve fund is pegged at around $8 million, barely enough to settle with Tennie Pierce. So, I guess "Frying-Pan" Jan wants to reduce the amount of money the City collects from its fatty-food tax, thereby reducing the income the City can shift to its reserve fund.

Every City department is supposed to trim more "fat" from their operating budgets. Hmmm... maybe she's onto something there - but still, she's opening up a can of worms from both oversized people and skinny people who might want to launch civil lawsuits against the City for discrimination.

Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen (wipes mouth and puts down napkin):
So, we’re having a running social commentary on bangers and mash are we? And for those of you who do NOT know Brit speak, “bangers and mash” is the equivalent of potatoes and beef sausage, savvy? And you Yanks are just now getting around to realizing that too many bangers is not good for the bum? (Sighs) I suppose it could be worse for in Hawaii, if you will, the locals go bonkers over SPAM. Fried SPAM, grilled SPAM, baked SPAM. SPAM, SPAM, SPAM which is probably worse for you on the food chain than bangers and mash.
There is one mum of our Five who lives in Do-As-I-Say-Not-What-I-Do Perry’s district who is truly a delightful matron. Her name is Mrs. Filli Fuunaluuvu, and she makes my own mum look as shapely as Britney Spears. This afternoon she brought her son’s luncheon for him and while he was eating, she read this blog. Now Mama Filli is a well-connected woman and her figure cuts a rather wide swath in the local community, notwithstanding the fact that she’s built like a Peterbuilt. After reading some of the comments posted here, she opined that she would like to tell Ms. DAISNWID Perry a few things, including, but not limited to, how and what to feed a growing Samoan chap (whispers confidentially) which would be anything and everything since the goal is to keep the larder replenished as it is fast depleted.
It is also Mama Filli’s opinion that Ms. Perry has indulged in a few dinners of fine foods and drinks herself at several fundraising events for Mama Filli has seen her there. (Raises one eyebrow while eating fried plaintain) Mama Filli knows which side of the Big Mac has mustard on it and which side is not, which, if you will, makes her one mama one does not want to mess with especially when you tell her what not to feed her precious child.
I would wager that if Mama Filli took on Ms. DAISNWID, that Mama would win hands down for you know what Samoan women can be like when provoked (gets smacked very hard on top of head by Mama Filli). Ouch! That hurt! (Winks) See what I mean? (Clears throat) Let’s see what the Samoan community in yon local district has to say (ducks quickly) for I can see that Mama Filli has already left the building for the parking lot…..savvy?

12:38: Sad to inform you that the seemingly healthier chicken sandwiches sold at fast food outlets are actually more fattening and unhealthy than the burgers -- saltier, too. What I would like to see is a calorie, fat and carb count for each food item so people like you could make more intelligent choices.

The Jack in the Box salads are pretty good, but even they can get fattening if you use all the dressing they give you, but then the same can be said of regular restaurants, too.

To person who says that cutting these profitable fast food outlets is bad for the city coffers, you're right. And with Carol Sobel having hundreds already and seeking literally thousands of plaintiffs suing the City from May 1st (there were no agitators then, remember: the cops are lying about that, even though we could see it on the video and they're lying that one cop got pulled off his chopper -- he didn't know how to ride all of a sudden).

With Rocky afraid to even go up against a clearly phony claim like Tennie Pierce's in court, despite several Councilmembers wanting him to and saying it's time to stop caving all the time -- what is the city going to have to give up to pay all these crooks for May 1st?
If Rocky weren't an idiot, he could have won some of these cases. He is the ruin of our city more ways than one.

Don’t know exactly what is a fast food joint? That is even better. You will decide on a case by case basis and again more power to you!

But watch out! MAV’s Activist Non-profit friends may claim that they represent the community and barge in to take that power away from you for themselves. Then they will decide. the city of l.a is just too lazy to look at what's really going on with obesity and diabetes in the south area. mommas and pappas are working 10 to 15 hour days so hell yea they're going to want to eat fast cheap food rather than going home to cook (that might take about 30 to 45 additional minutes before they actually eat). the city of l.a (mayor/council/etc.)needs to look at improving the quality of jobs and economic development in the poor areas, thereby hopefully improving the quality of life of its constituents. But THAT will be the day...

Just as long as no one outlaws the McD's fish sandwiches. Jack Hoff and I would mount a major challenge to that. Jack Hoff wrote a mouth-watering description of these things. Well, the description makes it sounds kind of bland, which is why it's so funny that it's anything but.
