Jan Perry With a Whopper of a Dumb Idea
Pretty soon in Los Angeles and the rest of California you will need government to make sure you cut off your pets' private parts, change your lightbulbs, bag your groceries correctly, etc.And luckily we have the patron saint of the Nanny State, Lloyd Levine to keep us safe.
Joining the ranks now is the Los Angeles City Council. Yes just when you think that Jack Hoff's favorite group of critical thinkers couldn't top themselves - they do it again.
They want to ban fast food restaurants in South Central.
Why? Most likely - as reported by the Fox Network's John Gibson - is that "...the L.A. city council thinks Latinos and Blacks are too fat, and they're thinking of doing something about it."

According to Councilwoman Jan Perry there are way too many fast food restaurants in South Central - and "The people don't want them," though the people sure eat there a lot.
Besides the patently absurd notion behind this feel good legislation there is the bigger issue of how do you enforce it? What is considered fast food and what isn't? Its just absolutely silly and no intellectually honest person with can offer a good reason with a straight face.
See it works this way people. In life we have choices. We make choices and we face the consequences of those choices.
If you eat a lot of most of the food they serve at fast food joints - you will probably be unhealthy and gain weight.
On the other hand you can make a decision to be healthy, eat and be well. Maybe its not easy if there are a lot of fast food places in your town. But practically every fast food outlet around these days - responding to the market - offers healthy choices and many of those are on the "value menu."
I speak from experience. In one year I've lost 170 pounds. Not by fad diets, not by surgeries or pills or anything else. It came from making appropriate choices.
I did not need Jan Perry, Lloyd Levine, George Bush or any government official to make that happen for me.
Let's hope this absurdity ends soon.

My only suggestion would be that Ms. Perry, instead of working through the Planning Dept. to get stakeholders to lose weight ("menu" planning could be helpful, tho) should work through the Transportation Dept. and simply ban all cars, bikes and buses from district streets, forcing everyone to walk everywhere all the time.

The council members each pull down over $175,000 a year in salary (and staff, cars and other budget allowances are on top of that)- Is this really a priority when they don't seriously address REAL issues like gangs, community safety and illegal immigration with its drain on resources?

They each should get off their asses, fat or trim, and get to work on SOLUTIONS to PRIORITY issues. The other stuff is campaign resume stuffing.
You know what Rocky's main job was when he worked for Riordan? Fast-tracking fast food franchises! That was what the "Business Team" was famous for. Rather than try to stop fast food franchises, Jan should figure out how to entice quality dining establishments to her district. She should hold Antonio to his promise to put more cops on the street(aren't we paying higher trash fees for that?), instead of carrying Bitter Bernie's water bashing the work schedule.
To get quality dining establishments in her district Jan would first have to fight crime and we all know getting Jan to do anything about crime is like getting Tony to keep his shorts up.

This woman is Jan Perry. She is a councilwoman for the city of Los Angeles, and according to her, people are too fat. Kind of the pot calling the kettle black, but regardless, she's taking the "progressive" view that in a free country like America, there's only one way to get people to take care of themselves: make more laws.
So in her first order of business, she wants to ban the creation of any and all fast-food restaurants in her district. According to her, people don't want to eat this stuff, but they "have to" because it's the only thing around. Obviously, no one pointed out the existence of grocery stores to her. And I guess in her opinion, lower income families are too stupid to make their own food. Which I find hilarious, because why on earth a black woman would insinuate that her district of mostly-minority individuals are too dumb to make good decisions is beyond me. But somehow that's the prevailing liberal mindset about personal choice. We're not smart enough to make our own decisions, and if we make bad ones it's because someone else forced us to.
Hypothetical conversation with big fat Jan Perry:
Jan Perry do you believe women should have the personal choice to abort a fetus?
Perry: "Yes, of course, that is a woman's right. It's her body, her choice."
Do you believe a person should have the right to eat french fries and hamburgers?
Perry: "No. People are too stupid to know which foods aren't good for them."

How did you get fat? Did you eat fast food? Maybe you wouldn't have gotten fat if you didn't eat fast food. Even after you lose all that weight, you will still have problems because of the weight.You'll need a tummy tuck. It would have been better if you didn't get fat in the first place. I don't have a problem with the City helping us make better food choices. If we still want to pig out, we can make our own greasy burger and fries or order it at a regular restaurant.

I am pro-choice when it comes to food. Perry's proposal doesn't recognize the fact that each of the fast-food establishments offer healthy food too.
When I'm trying to eat healthy and I'm on the run, I'm thankful that there are places like this where I can a salad or a grilled chicken sandwich. Otherwise, I'd be limited to the closest liquor store or grocery store, or the push cart vendors, who in certain parts of town, including hers, serve nothing but the most fattening foods.
Can't say I blame Disney. Tony the emperor with no drawers presiding over a magical kingdom of phantom neighborhood watch and phantom 1,000 additional police officers is perfect for them.

Seems to me the "honorable" Jan Perry wants to ensure that the City limits its collection of City taxes by eliminating these "too many" fast-food joints. The City reserve fund is pegged at around $8 million, barely enough to settle with Tennie Pierce. So, I guess "Frying-Pan" Jan wants to reduce the amount of money the City collects from its fatty-food tax, thereby reducing the income the City can shift to its reserve fund.
Every City department is supposed to trim more "fat" from their operating budgets. Hmmm... maybe she's onto something there - but still, she's opening up a can of worms from both oversized people and skinny people who might want to launch civil lawsuits against the City for discrimination.

Not that I'm supporting this idea. Any parents who can't cook at least sometimes and believe they have to feed their families at fast food restaurants need serious help. I've seen poor families spend $50 on junk fast food when for that money, they could feed their family at home for days and be healthy.

12:38: Sad to inform you that the seemingly healthier chicken sandwiches sold at fast food outlets are actually more fattening and unhealthy than the burgers -- saltier, too. What I would like to see is a calorie, fat and carb count for each food item so people like you could make more intelligent choices.
The Jack in the Box salads are pretty good, but even they can get fattening if you use all the dressing they give you, but then the same can be said of regular restaurants, too.
To person who says that cutting these profitable fast food outlets is bad for the city coffers, you're right. Jan Perry and aide Mike Hernandez should assume their roles as community leaders and immediately commit themselves to losing enough weight to fit them within medical standards for weight and body fat, and have weekly public weigh-ins. The would continuously have a forum for promoting healthy eatling and living. Something has to account for their own unhealthy eating habits, and it can't be the presence of fast food restaurants. Alex Padilla's bill was passed on the last day of the Legislature for this year and is now awaiting a yea or nay from the Governor. From the "knowledge is power" perspective, this seems like a more productive answer/assist in dealing with obesity than CM Perry's approach, but would be interested to hear the "Let the market decide" argument and how it would apply in the health realm.

the city of l.a is just too lazy to look at what's really going on with obesity and diabetes in the south area. mommas and pappas are working 10 to 15 hour days so hell yea they're going to want to eat fast cheap food rather than going home to cook (that might take about 30 to 45 additional minutes before they actually eat). the city of l.a (mayor/council/etc.)needs to look at improving the quality of jobs and economic development in the poor areas, thereby hopefully improving the quality of life of its constituents. But THAT will be the day...
