CITIZEN'S ALERT Declared By Neighbors Regarding Vernon Power Plant Proposal (NoVernonPowerPlant.com)

Something that is very important to the people in the neighboring area is the Vernon Power Plant that is being proposed in the area. I know one concern brought to my attention is the power plant's proximity to several schools (affection numerous students) among other concerns. I've received enough emails and calls on this that I think this flyer deserves the attention here on Mayor Sam's blog for everyone in the area to be aware of:

Thanks for this. You could call these communities the Diesel Death Zone North. They are already surrounded by the 710 Freeway, the East Yard, the Hobart Yard, and the Alameda Corridor, second only to the ports as the largest sources of toxic diesel exhaust in California. Now they want to add this thing on top of it.

There is a term of art for places like this, "Environmental Sacrifice Zones". Places which are polluted and degraded beyond redemption already are the places of choice for more pollution. Why ruin another decent place, after all? Plus most of the residents of such areas are usually economically disadvantaged and/or people of color, and low propensity voters.

Dump it on them.

This is directly related to the post below about Tony Villar's manipulation of SB 974. Wilmington, San Pedro, west Long Beach, Commerce, East LA, Bell, Bell Gardens, Cudahy, Lynwood, et al are all sisters under the skin. Let them all die, as long as we make our money.

WE WON ANOTHER ONE!

High court sides with Times

By Thomas Peele
August 28, 2007

The salaries of government employees in California, including police officers, are a public record and must be available upon request to "ensure transparency," the state Supreme Court ruled in a decision released Monday.

"Openness in government is essential to the functioning of a democracy," Chief Justice Ronald George wrote in a 30-page opinion, ending a lawsuit the Contra Costa Times filed more than three years ago against the city of Oakland.

Justices found that government employees should not have an expectation of privacy about their gross salaries even if disclosure of the information "may cause discomfort or embarrassment."

The justices wrote that police salaries must also be made public except in narrow circumstances "where an officer's anonymity is essential to his or her safety," the decision states. The justices affirmed that police cannot use broad claims of officer safety to make blanket denials of salary information.

The ruling overturns a 2003 appellate court decision involving five cities in San Mateo County where employee unions blocked the release of salaries to the Palo Alto Daily News.

In that case, known as the Priceless decision after the Daily News' former owner, a Superior Court judge ruled that employees' privacy rights trumped the newspaper's right to the salaries. The appellate court affirmation of that decision became the basis for local governments around the state to refuse to release salaries.

Problem is Vernon will be selling their energy to other cities. Guess who will profit? ONE politician has come out against this Gloria Molina. I'm no fan of her but at least she's fighting for the people. NO HUIZAR NO CONGRESSWOMAN ROYBAL ALLARD, NO CEDILLO NO FABIAN all who represent districts where this toxic waste plant is going.

WE NEED TO MAKE HUIZAR ACCOUNTABLE. NO ONE EVER GOES AFTER HIM. WHY AREN'T THE REPORTERS AFTER THIS STORY. FAMILIES AND CHILDREN WILL HAVE TO BREATHE THIS BULLSHIT WITH THE WIND BLOWING IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS TOXIC WASTE

Huizar is too busy having his staff work on the El Grito Sept. 16th celebration. You know again the celebration for MEXICANS not Americans. I'm Latino but why doesn't Huizar put in as much energy for 4th July????? His staff has handed out tons of flyers for this stupid crap and you know Huizar profits cause he makes vendors pay to be at the event on the bridge. Huizar has lost over 15 employees in one year. HE treats them like slaves and he's a king and makes them work like dogs

"HE treats them like slaves and he's a king and makes them work like dogs '

Rich people of Mexico, Central and South America treat the "other" people very badly. So,the poor people leave there and come here.

Here they get everything free, cant be deported, can drive without licenses, never be fined or lose the car.

In this City we have at least two "illegal alien" or "anchor baby" men who have been able to rise to our government. How many more of our government representatives are "anchor " or "illegal" children.

When did Huizar become a citizen? Or has he? When did his parents get their documentation and his?

4:50pm, Gloria Molina, Sam Pedroza Sanitation District/Claremont City Councilman want to expand the Diesel Death Zone even further.

There is a rail yard that they want to put next to the Materials Recycling facility that Gloria Romero let come into the unincorporated part of Whitter, Industry, La Puente.

They have the Puente Hills Landfill, the Materials Recycling Facility, Athens Disposal,a third rail road track, and now this Inter-modal facility.

The California Air Resources Board did a really interesting cancer risk study of the Roseville (I think) rail yard near Sacramento. Actually, terrifying is probably a better word. It should be pretty easy to find on the web.

Penny Newman's group, Center for Community Action and Environmental Justice, at ccaej.org, has been doing great work around rail yards in the Riverside/San Bernardino area.

There is sort of a methodology for cancer risk analysis, always keeping in mind that figures don't lie but liars figure. The other 40+ health "end points" related to diesel exhaust, COPD, asthma, heart atack, stroke, stillbirth, low birth weight, SIDS, allergies, etc, etc, etc, are another whole story.

Yopu are right to be concerned.

Well Huizar must really be pissed at Rocky for telling LAPD they CAN impound all those illegal cars. How dare Huizar and Hahn think they could help illegals break the law again. Legal residents were about to sue the city for discrimination on this issue. Illegal break the law by driving without a license, most likely doesn't have insurance and who the hell do you think pays when they get in accidents and DUI's and take off? YOU AND ME

Is Huizar paying people off by allowing them to "promote" to a better position? Is he getting rid of the ones he did pay off and still has more to pay off? Is the Mayor using CD14 as the training school for up and coming Commissioners?

First the Councilman lies and becomes Mayor. His trainee, the School Board President Huizar, was elected Councilman. In two month in service Huizar was identified as"Huizar-MIA". Nine of his staff quit before the election. Now 15 have quit since the election. If he were in business he would be up on charges for something.

9/6 706am, Is it because Molina has also been opposed to some of the people behind the power plant for years that makes her unsupportive of the power plant project?
Or am I wrong about the animosity between them?
