Power corrupts
Your fishwrap of record this morning adds a decidedly daring look to its column insert. Why, it's so inclusionary this morning, so multicultural, that it will even take a chance on featuring the voices of aging white male pattern baldness!
(Lynn looks over my shoulder and says, "Hey, all those poor people are just going through what you're going through!")
That's Steve Lopez at the top of that illustrious who-needs-a-barbershop quintet. He is steaming over an abuse of power. Funny, some people would say that Steve Lopez is an abuse of power...
Today, case in point. Steve like most of us doesn't like it when his power goes off. But unlike most of us, he expects noteworthy civic figures in town to return his phone call when something goes wrong at chez Lopez, and implies that if you don't, he'll browbeat you in his column.
In most circles, they call that blackmail; but in Steve's, it's advocacy journalism.
Just listen to the tone of this:
"He was telling it to the wrong guy"...."Garcetti, who has not lost his power, of course..."
Where are you going with that, Steve? You have the President of City Council return your personal call, and you're still going to suggest that he's on his own private grid?
We all know how special Steve is. Even so, I'd like all of you ordinary, aw-shucks citizens to try to call David Nahia or Eric Garcetti the next time your power goes off, just like Steve did.
The other thing is: you empathize with Steve to a degree, for what he went through. This was a really, really bad outage from the sound of it. The DWP should have treated Lopez---and all its customers with emergency-level problems---a lot better. And that should start at the service level, not at the nabob level.

Just listen to the tone of this:
Tuesday, which I like to think of as our third day of hell, brought no change. I went to work and called the DWP. Board President David Nahia, among others, told me they were doing the best they could in a killer heat wave, and that since he took the helm two years ago, the utility has been working on an infrastructure upgrade. He did note that 98% of all customers didn't lose power, but he was telling it to the wrong guy.
At the very least, I should be exempt from the rate increase request the DWP has pending, which would cost customers about $1 a month and, the agency says, help speed the improvements. But with the DWP, you always have to wonder if the problem is really money rather than management and performance.
About midday Tuesday, Council President Eric Garcetti returned my call. He said he'd found out what was happening in my neighborhood. The problem wasn't a transformer, but, ironically, a circuit system in the process of being upgraded. DWP had to build a temporary bypass during the improvements, he said, and the bypass couldn't handle increased demand during the heat wave, so it blew.
And what does that mean in terms of how long we'll be in the dark?
Garcetti, who has not lost his power, of course, didn't know. He didn't jump at my offer to trade houses, but invited us to drop by his place.
"He was telling it to the wrong guy"...."Garcetti, who has not lost his power, of course..."
Where are you going with that, Steve? You have the President of City Council return your personal call, and you're still going to suggest that he's on his own private grid?

Interesting, I did call David Nahai, many times and he called me back. It was during our last big blackout.
He called me back many months later and I found him to be incredibly reasonable and helpful.
You know who didn't answer phones or call back?
Wendy Gruel's office.
I'll be fundraising for anyone who runs against her.

Someone sounds a little bitter. Who cares about Steve Lopez one way or the other? Is your story about DWP or a complaint about Steve Lopez? Is Steve Lopez the most pressing issue this morning? Sure took up a lot of blog space over this most critical issue.

At least in the old days, reporters were not supposed to use their positions for personal problems.

Gee to think those idiot city council members gave DWP workers the highest pay raise ever at 17% and poor police officers only 4%. And for that much money you're we're still having power outages. Dumb ass Steve Lopez should have reported on the 26 city cars Antonio has instead of trying to kiss ass to politicians to get his power on. Doesn't work Steve cause now you're one of us who pay a fortune for DWP and no service.

Power Outage:
Where is the Mayor?
What did the Mayor say about the Power Outage?
What did the Mayor do about the Power Outage?
What is he going to do to prevent the same thing from happening again?
Where is the Mayor when you need one?
A Mayor can’t just go to ribbon-cutting and groundbreaking ceremonies to take all the credits in the world, but disappears when there is problem.

Please try and stay on topic. This isn't about the Mayor or Wendy Gruel. It is about Mr. Steve Lopez. He is at the root of the DWP crisis.

Steve Lopez is on a major power trip, ever since he started making fun of various officials more sarcastically than any of the hard-news reporters could. But now he's obnoxious, a little dictator.
IF any of the officials did what he is demanding: Gave the head of DWP and City Council call me back within hours to explain why MY power is out since I'm more special than anyone, he'd have their hides in his column the next day.
Can you imagine if it was the other way around: that he got hold of Eric Garcetti peevishly DEMANDING to put his house above all others and demanding to know how dare he be treated like run-of-the-mill unlucky plebes, or threaten the people in charge with public ridicule and embarrassment?
Lopez would be the first one to attack Eric for "abuse of power."
Maybe the Times should consider reigning in their little house monster.

AT least we gotta give STeve Lopez credit for being the only reporter who called it as he and many of us saw Antonio's ride into LA and off with the sunset. Meaning he'd scew LA eventually along with his mistress and wouldn't give a crap about the city. Look what you guys voted in just because he was a Latino. Now he makes all Latinos look badly.

Nice racist post 1:27. Antonio doesn't make all Latinos look "badly" any more than your bad grammar makes all whites look stupid, or George Bush makes all Texans look bad.
Anonymous said:
Its not just Antonio that makes "Latino politicans" (I stand corrected) look badly how many have been caught doing something unethical? Gonzales, South Gate Latino politicians, Huizar and Molina had construction at their homes with no permit, Huizar has corruption going on with his ex staffer Gustavo yet says not a word. Rocky really screwed up with the car issue, Reyes fired good people to hire young Latina women, Alarcon tried to pass a motion to help new wife. Then all the corruption with payoffs from Richard Meuerlo then all the bs with Torres who got convicted and is tied to Latino politicians here in LA. Look at the horrible blight and bullshit in this city. It has never looked this badly. Say what you want about mayor Hahn but we never had the damn illegal immigrants issue when he was in office. Now damn illegals think because Antonio is mayor this has become a sanctuary city. You can kiss Federal funds goodbye.

2:41: Mayor Hahn, like his sister Janice now, pandered to the blacks of their Watts/Wilmington/San Pedro core and that's why they refused to let MLK be fixed in timely fashion, god forbid any staff there be disciplined or it would be a "racist" issue (just like black leaders have continued to make MLK out to be to this day). There just aren't enough blacks to be a grandstanding powerbase for a white leftie family anymore -- and they have their own leaders, too. Given what they've tried to make of MLK, they are no better.
No one group should regard being in power as a call to become a black, or Hispanic, or any other ethnic city. The Mayor understands that more than the others, certainly Huizar and Alarcon and Reyes, who cater to their own little areas, yet he needs them in his coalition, too. But he's also reached out to whites, has gotten more support from them even on the westside and valleys than any Latinos before.
When he does support downtown development or other issues that aren't pro-Hispanic, he's given hell for that, too, as not being pro-poor people enough. And then the Hispanics bash him for selling out to the whites and, of course, the wealthy Jews. Ain't easy.
But if we had a white mayor, NOT brainless tax-and-spend pandering to blacks Hahns, they'd have to reach out to the Hispanics anyway.
They're here, working with their leaders is the only option. Rant all you want, ain't gonna mean Tony and Huizy and Cholo Alarcon are doin' down to the querido Mexico.
Focus on what you can do. Make them understand that some issues like the car license thing are over the line, not acceptable.

By the way, with his name of Lopez, the guy ain't exactly Dutch. What is his background? Third-gen, maybe, so he feels like an honorary white? He sure isn't going easy on his fellow Latinos, if that's what he is.
Maybe he is bending over backwards to be tough to prove something, like Ana Garcia at Ch. 4 -- who's dyed her hair very light, by the way.

2:41pm,
I'm new to the scene. Are you saying it's always been this way and Antonio is just taking extra heat? I actually asked a local newspaper writer, "Has it always been this bad?" (Regarding the fraud, waste and abuse?)
Now I know it's alway bad and it goes on everywhere...But, it's my opinion that this guy Antonio is just a little overboard in the shadiness dept.
I know you are no Antonio kool-aid drinker. So were you trying to say Antonio is just another case of the last line of the Who song from CSI? (Meet the new boss, same as the old boss)

Antonio opened his big mouth and ran on being a Latino. He made it a racist campaign. He even paraded his family knowing full well he was seeing Mirthala on the side and pretended to be a family value man. JOKE!!! He wears the latino label only when it suits him. Trust me the Westside and Valley, South LA can't stand Antonio. The South are sick of the illegals who have ruined their communities that were already a mess with tons of families lvinging in 2 bdr. apts. Because AV came out in support of illegals Westside know where he stands on that issue and want him gone, Valley have been wanting to separate from LA and now is the time to do it. Antonio is the only mayor from a large city that doesn't have one damn thing he can claim as an accomplishment. NOT ONE DAMN PROJECT

Thanks for the thoughtful responses.
I have started playing my "Mayor Sam Game" where on each post I see the words "damn illegals" or "Mexican...," I replace them with the words "Negroes" or "Jews."
Try it.
For those of you with an awareness of Turkish history, you can try "Armenians."
School has just started up again. There are a lot of kids that are exposed to the street on a daily basis. While some posters think racist comments are clever or even justifiable, I (and many others) find them only dangerous and poisonous to this society and, in particular, our children.
Google "Hate Crimes in Los Angeles" and ask yourself if you are being a pro-active voice in the debate.
Or, if you have a problem, at least call your flippin' U.S. Congressman, senator, assemblyman, council member, mayor, or even Rec & Park Director and ask how you can be part of the solution.

@ 3:01 PM: You sound young and naive. The Mayor doesn't understand shit. The Mayor is blowing in the breeze, taking pretty pictures or sitting on the coattails of certainties, waiting for a chance at being governor. He panders to developers and to the Sanctuary City crowd (ie. the Federal Government and Federal funding).
The major problem in the city is crime and it's derivatives. The Major needs to follow Guilani's example, in New York, and let Bratton reduce crime substantially (ignore those fake and/or misleading statistics). This is because: you won't get quality immigrants with a crime plagued city, you won't get people to use mass transit (as well as Smart Growth) with a crime plagued city, you won't get improved business and law and order with Special Order 40, etc.
So, you think that the Mayor is magnanimous to all? Well, I'll not waste time with examples to dispel this myth. But, I will say that what he is allowing, with unreasonable density increases, will cause productive people to leave and non-productive people and criminals to stay. Of course, the wealthy will eventually enclose themselves in gated communities and ignore us.

ok. step 1 . when its super hot, and your using the air conditioning along with everyone else on the grid, TURN OFF ALL YOUR OTHER SH*T.
like phone charger, phone answering, big screen TV, printer, hi-fi amplifier, fan, lights, VCR, and especially the washing machine.
its just common sense that when demand is high, you can't expect to be running everything in your house, and still scratch your head when the power goes out.
switch it off if you're not using it.

Let's not forget that I have been working hard since the Pacheco campaign, as an assistant-vice-associate blogger on this site.
I am an accomplised guy, and I will win the Montebello City Council seat! I am Robert Urteaga.

3:43PM: How about Antonio buddy’s $160 million project at Wilshire and Western above the MTA station with 185 condos? Posts here said something about a project where only $900,000 was paid to waive 30 affordable housing units? Is that true? Can the city take that $900,000 and build 30 affordable housing units?
If true, can Antonio claim that an accomplishment?

Just a little? Try a lot! Can’t you tell by the trusted advisors and friends surrounding him?
Yes, there is always something bad, but to a different degree. Laura Chick was watching Hahn a lot closer than all the posters here in this blog combined are watching Antonio now. And Laura has more official power and gets paid a lot more than you do. However, she is looking the other way as Antonio is in office. Still, you can find so much more shadiness than she ever did.

Steve Lopez is abusing his power, and we just want to limit our discussion about him?
I bet that Antonio returns (at least at one point) Salinas’ (also a reporter) phone calls a lot faster than DWP or CM are returning Steve Lopez’ phone calls!
Perhaps Steve is just a little bit jealous, and rightfully so?
If you really want to talk about “Power Corrupts” concerning reporters/journalists/commentators, you may have to go back to talk about Antonio’s affair!

If it weren't for Zuma, nasty City Hall stories would never get leaked anymore.

At least he does women and not men in bathrooms like put near half of the Republican party. I guess the other half do their MALE pages.
The affair is old news. Can't we just let it drop? Bring it back the next time he's stupid enough to go out in public with her. In addition to not wanting to read about it, nobody wants to see it either.

3:06, your comment, "By the way, with his name of Lopez, the guy ain't exactly Dutch. What is his background? Third-gen, maybe, so he feels like an honorary white? He sure isn't going easy on his fellow Latinos, if that's what he is.", deserves a response.
Mister Lopez is NOT third generation Latino, and definitely isn't Latino... never was one! He happens to be of Basque origin, I believe.
3:01 made an interesting point though about MLK. His comment, "...god forbid any staff there be disciplined or it would be a "racist" issue (just like black leaders have continued to make MLK out to be to this day)."
The way I see it is that black leaders were quite willing to put up with a second-rate hospital (hence the nickname of "Killer King") in the South LA community, which I regard as being the ultimate in racism against their fellow blacks citizens. What should have been accomplished in years past was to make MLK a first-rate hospital. But black leaders were just too willing to be thin-skinned when it came to needed improvements, and now the result of doing nothing to improve MLK is plainly visible to everyone.
Given a choice, what kind of hospital would each of us be willing to receive treatment at, a first-rate hospital, or a second-rate hospital? In my opinion, the chances of walking out alive from a second-rate hospital is a crapshoot at best; the chances of doing the same at a first-rate, highly-regarded hospital are vastly improved.

9:52, If AV was invited to be gone, then most of your "hispanic haters" would be gone too... but not all of them!
I'm not opposed to hispanics coming into our nation... as long as they do so LEGALLY according to our nation's laws. I'm not opposed to Asians, Canadians, Cubans, Europeans, Africans, or any other nationality coming into our nation either... IF they do so LEGALLY according to our nation's laws.
For illegals to DEMAND special status is the height of hypocrisy, insofar they would like to cut in line ahead of those who have taken the time to go through the necessary legal process... and in some cases have been waiting for up to 17 years for permission to enter our nation.
For the government of Mexico to protest the deportation of their citizens from our country to theirs, and to demand that we stop enforcing OUR laws is completely outside what is considered good diplomatic behavior.
Perhaps the government of Mexico would like for our Federal officials to demand that they (Mexico) stop enforcing their immigration laws on their southern border?

Kissing up to those in power (having an affair may involve some kissing) and being their mouthpiece when you have some influence yourself (like a reporter), is abuse of power and aiding it.
Flexing your muscle while disagreeing with those in real power (particularly if they are wrong), hoping to help people with weaker voice, is not abuse of power.
More power to Mr. Anti-Abuse-of-Power, Steve Lopez

9:12: So you say that Steve Lopez is "rightfully jealous" that MAV returns Mirthala's phone calls before anyone else's, because he was banging her, sounds like Steve Lopez is jealous because he can't bang the Mayor, too?
Now that is good journalistic ethics, demanding that what's fair for one, is fair for all, so he has to bang all reporters (or free-license commentors, as in Lopez' case)? Now wouldn't that keep the Mayor definitely too busy to do his job, and seems to me, that it's not a news flack's place to demand to bang every public official. Demanding they return your phone calls over YOUR house, not even an issue of city-wide interest, is bad enough and what we were talking about. Get your ass out of the Mayor's, already.

Interesting point is we're not racist if we're Latino and not supporting illegals and speaking out. People always assume that its just whites or blacks speaking out against illegals. WRONG. Many legal Latinos are sick and tired of the blight and bullshit these illegals have cause in our city. TAke a ride into downtown LA and see how it now looks like a 3rd world country with illegal vendors cooking in the hot sun with no gloves and bacteria latent food is sold to families. We have seen these people go to an alley and pee and not wash their hands then go back and cook. Yes, I'm a Latino and want ICE to start raiding this city.

Steve like most of us doesn't like it when his power goes off. But unlike most of us, he expects noteworthy civic figures in town to return his phone call when something goes wrong at chez Lopez, and implies that if you don't, he'll browbeat you in his column.
Sometimes Steve Lopez would cater to political correctness and write about soft gentle touchy stuff, I guess he has to when working for LA Times. And it is good too.
Other times, he would write about city politicians. And he would be the only one who dares to tell the truth.
I admire Steve Lopez when he goes up against powerful city politicians on behalf of little guys. And I have been listening to Steve Lopez’s tone. His tone is this: “I am a columnist. I could write about this. These politicians should know. But still these politicians would be so slow in responding or fixing the problem. How arrogant or impotent are these politicians? How much worse would the averaged citizens be treated?
Steve Lopez seems to be the only columnist at LAT who would dare to tell the truth when writing about Antonio. Steve Lopez must know, and someone must have told him, that this guy is very vindictive.
