Special Interests Derail Unique Program

The City has for now shut down an innovative Department of Animal Services program that seeks to reduce the euthanization of pit bulls through a succesful, non-profit program that uses parolees to train the dogs to prepare them for adoption.

Though the controversy seems to revolve around liability, perceptions about the dog's breed or the mishandling of the situation by General Manager Ed Boks (and don't get wrong, the old, dead Republican Mayor is no fan of Ed Boks), in watching the Council's debate on the matter it is my opinion that the issue is none of this - the real rub is that the few measly positions taken by the parolees cut into spots that could theoretically go to unionized City employees - as basically pointed out by Union hacks who were the only public commenteers to oppose the program.

Its sad that a creative endeavor that can save the taxpayers money as well as solve a true social need has to be subject to the greed of the special interests. And that our good for nothing Clowncil won't show the leadership to stand up to these special interests.
