Mayor Sam's Hotsheet for Monday
The LA Times reports that Victor Tacarena, a high level manager for the City's Housing Authority has been fired for allegedly directing nearly a million dollars in city contracts to family members. The Times store also details nearly $300,000 in other projects were awarded to firms that did not have any demonstrated experience in the work they were paid for, but were politically connected to Eastside based members of the City Council. In a related note, Walter Moore catches that the Housing Authority was paying $2500 for toilets that normally retail at around $100 each.An oversight committee has voted to increase Los Angeles Unified School Board members salaries to $46,000 per year - the same amount offered to starting teachers within the district. The one caveat however is that board members who opt to accept other employment will be limited to the current salary of $26,000 a year. Newly elected board members Tamar Galtatzan (who earns $128,000 a year as a city attorney) and Yolie Flores-Aguilar will keep their current positions and not receive the raise.

There was a strange twist to the Mirthala story on how she may have used Antonio all along to get ahead at the network level putting him in a position where he has to support the huge development at Universal back lot.

Does anyone know about the connection between Huizar, Gustavo and those developers that want to build condos at Wyvenwood? Someone has to know who gave the $95,000 job to Gustavo, was it Huizar? No surprise here. Valdivia is just following the moral compass of his bosses, inlcuding Antonio and Alatorre. Afterall, didn't Valdivia offer up his own wife to Tony Cardenas? No college degree, barely speaks English and she has a high paying city job with Cardenas - I guess the only qulaification needed was that she wore a skirt well and short.
What is Victor Griego's role in in the Housing Authority scandal. Victor is also involved in the Vernon Power Plany community deception that is going on and Victor already has his hands in virtually every MTA contract out there, thanks to Antonio.
Valdivia is going to rat everyone out. Remember he was Pacheco's lap dog, then he turned his allegiance to Antonio and now Huizar is holding his leash. No loyalty whatsoever, he is going to rat everyone out and then he will be deported with a huge amount of cash. That is why he came to this country. Incidentally, he happens to be from the same home state as Huizar, Zacatecas.
You might want to be a bit more careful with your spelling of names. It is Taracena, not Tacarena; also, Galatzan, not Galatzlan...
That Vernon power plant thing is really interesting. So much for "environmental justice" when the folks who used to stand up for this concept are now instead being paid to "stick it" to low-income and minority communities.

Pacheco may have made some mistakes but he wasn't corrupt - although Villaraigosa got The Times to believe that for a long time. Valdivia is Huizar's bagman, everybody in CD 14 knows that.

What about the MAYOR?
Doesn't he have building and safety department under his purview?

Is it because NBC/Universal has problems with villar on other matters? Or...is NBC protecting the mayor?
It would be good to ask this question. Instead of focusing on NBC's Laurel Erickson asking when the Mayor will wed Mirthala! Come on, LA Times!

Pacheco is involved in the housing corruption because he is the attorney for Abraham Paez the executive director of Estrada Courts and that's mentioned in the Times story. They are a non profit and got tons of money from Pacheco when he was in office and others. LA Times needs to do an investigation and find out how much money Estrada Courts got from Pacheco then Huizar. Alatorre is a consultant to both Estrada courts and Antonio. They are all corrupt Latinos and I hope Times does a follow up.
FYI Paul Moyer 1st investigation did speak with Antonio and of course as always he played DUMB "I didn't know any of this."

Reminder that Rocky got a huge $450,000 contribution in 01 to defeat Feuer for the C A job (Feuer promised his constituents he'd curb billboard blight like they wanted), from CBS Outdoors/ Clear Channel. Now they're putting up any billboard, any size and content, anywhere they want, and suing the City any time the Council or any CM objects. When directed to go back to negotiate openness as to where they put their billboards, especially in response to outcries about their Captivity campaign (which showed in graphic detail a woman being caged, tortured and murdered in four parts), Rocky came back with an even more lenient deal for them. Outraged a number of CMs but after Rocky's brilliant agreement with them, they're pretty stuck. Guess CBS/Clear Channel feel the 450K they paid (bribed) Rocky with should last as long as Rocky is in office. They're his ONLY supporters, that I can see.
Good thing the most ethical candidate won the job back in 2001.

Here in Los Angeles, the life of a City Council member is pretty cushy. Our Council members are the highest paid in the nation 0- they make around $150,000 a year. That's a good living for a public official. By comparison, New York's City Council members make
The City Controller, City Attorney (for whom I used to work), and Mayor in L.A. all get over $150k -- L.A.'s government is doing pretty well. But apparently, that high pay is not enough -- the electeds also get free cars. And guess what, even that's not enough -- taxpayers also pay for their repairs. You think that's enough? It's not. They can use staffers to drive them. The trifecta! Free cars, free repairs, free drivers.
The Daily News has an article on how the State Legislature lets spouses, novice teenage kids, as well as staffers drive their cars any time, for personal uses, too: and repairs are always unquestioned. Article suggests that Rocky move up to the State level, if his wife is going to keep having intimate contact with poles and walls and such -- she can bang up anything she wants if he's up in Sacramento.
As for the comp between our City Councilmembers and those in NYC, it's apples and oranges, literally.
In the Big Apple they have a lot less responsibility relative to the Mayor's office, and there are a lot more of them covering less territory, not one per borough.
What we should question is why that total educational novice, Brewer, had to be given a salary of around $400 thou a year, with his mortgage AND car paid for by us, when he's done nothing since to merit it, except cutting a lot of other people's jobs and salaries (since the teachers are untouchable and have historically run his and Marlene Kanter's agenda, such as it was). So to those who gripe about the board given a raise to about $45K IF they don't work elsewhere, keep this in mind: they're doing the job he should have done.

If Mirthala is found guilty by her network, the Mayor would probably have to recuse himself from input on the Universal City deal, and they've been counting on his support. So he doesn't have to actually pressure them to make them want to pardon her.

There is a general lack of understanding on the CC about funding cops in specialized units for safety and terrorism: as Bratton says, it's not something you can pull a cop off the street for and say, "here, deal with this high-tech terror stuff."
The four-person public safety Comm. did recently approve funding the 44 cops Bratton needs, because we have an expensive/state-of-the art anti- terror central command building, but no staff to run it right now -- but Zine and Smith, two former cops, later complained about having to choose between that and Tasers.
This is so messed up: we are so NOT prepared to prevent, let alone properly respond to, a serious terror attack. (Just as Bush adm. even admits that Al Qaeda has been sneaking up towards L A through our unsecured borders.) Not to mention that all the hospitals are closing; in the event of a chemical attack or even something like bird flu or sars, we'd have no facilities or stock of antibiotics. (Remember how we were supposed to have tape and plastic wrap on hand to cover the windows? Yeah, right...)
There are a few CM's talking about this, but others are out to lunch.

Or perhaps there are people out there who want to see the corruption stopped and if the Mayor's schtupping habits happen to be the tool to drag the corrupt ones down, fine. There also may be people out there who are not willing to cooperate with the corrupt ones and simply fade off into dreamland and "forget" ... "forget" ... "forget" ...
You are very paranoid about all the threats your government keeps telling you are coming and you bemoan the fact that nothing adequate is being done to prepare for all these "terrors and diseases" about to descend, well just who do you think is not addressing those issues? The corrupt ones who have more important self-serving agendas to attend to.
Maybe you need to get a little more obsessive-compulsive about following through on any opportunity presented to oust these creatures from their positions and influence.
to 6:48: I hope that when it's L A's inevitable turn for our own 9/11 or London or Madrid, YOU'LL be the one in the tower or on the bus, still obsessing about the Mayor's schtupping habits. 1. How ethical can you be if you willingly have an affair with a married man? If Mirthala Salinas will steal a married man, what else will she steal? Unlike some women who can claim they did not know he was married, this clearly was not the case.
2. She is a liar. All people who have affairs are liars. She may have told Telemundo that she did not want to cover the mayor anymore, but did she tell them she was having sex with him. Did she tell his wife that he was screwing her on the evenings he was late coming home?

Mirthala Salinas is an opportunist. She will be with the mayor as long as he is going up the political chain. The problem is that she might be his dead weight. The other problem is that Mayor Villaraigosa will probably go on to fresh meat if she loses her job.

Well, actually, now that her "history" is out there and common knowledge, coupled with the fact that she isn't getting any younger, her prospects on the "power fu**er" horizon may be diminishing - any of these slugs seen "dallying" with her at this point would be rather a large joke and a laughing stock. And if Villar feels squeezed into a corner to make this sordid thing come out looking like a great "romance" I doubt that a lot of people are really going to buy that ... but it would be a kind of poetic justice if those two found it expedient to marry - they would deserve each other and the undoubtedly lovely life they would have together.
