Is Zev Yaroslavsky Running For Mayor?
It sure sounds like he is. Antonio Watch reported the other day that former Mayor James Hahn could be staging a political comeback; perhaps another "blast from the past" is the former 5th District Councilman turned LA County Supervisor, Zev Yaroslavsky.Speaking to a gathering of Neighborhood Council members (see video below) Zev spoke about Citywide issues and preached to the choir of those gathered.
With Mayor Villaraigosa in even more deep doo doo recently, could local pols smell blood and be testing the waters? Are more politicians considering challenging a perhaps mortally wounded Mayor when he seeks re-election? And could a deal be in the works to steer City Controller Laura Chick to Yaroslavsky's county supervisor seat should Zev be elected Mayor?

What the blogger writing about Alicia Corona and Teresa Durate is trying to inform you about is that your tax money has been given to Alicia and Teresa to the tune of $1.5 Million Dollars to Purchase the former Rose Eye Clinic located in Lincoln Heights.
This is just one more example of the type of irresponsible and negligent development that occurs in highly ethnic communities such as Lincoln Heights.
These ladies are sweatshop owners that do not live in the area and have been able to convince the local city councilman Ed Reyes to support their venture. It is unfortunate because under the guise of bringing so called needed jobs to the community they have been given a variance by the city for a liquor license and gambling establishment to be built on this site which is directly across from Gates Elementary School, Lincoln High School and in back of it Little Flower pre-school and kindergarten. The gambling part consists of over 140 video arcade machines that will be fully operational during regular school hours. Fears are that the a local group claiming to be descendents of the local Native Americans will attempt to declare the site as a federally protected reservation because of the hieroglyphics rumored to be in a dynamited cave on a hill behind the project and thereby utilizing the approval of the gambling variance as a precedent to establishing a full blown casino adjacent to these schools.
The community has been fighting back, but it has been unable since the unethical involvement from USC's Institute of Genetic Medicine’s through Lyn Crandel and David Galaviz in carrying out a coup to take over the Lincoln Heights Neighborhood Council. Incidentally it seems that David Galaviz is even more unethical then first thought. Information has it that he is married to M. Teresa Villegas, a Mayor Villar’s appointee to the Environmental Affairs Commission. (Villegas served as an Executive Fellow for the California Air Resources Board with funding from the Hewlett Foundation. She developed recommendations for improvements to the State’s Environmental Justice Program, all of which were approved by the Air Resources Board. Ms. Villegas previously served as Legislative Director for the Trust for Public Land in Sacramento. She is currently a public policy consultant for local governments and the Trust for Public Land. She also serves as a Board Member for the Planning and Conservation League, a statewide environmental advocacy group. Board of Directors of the Land Trust Alliance)
It has been 2 years since the Lincoln Heights Neighborhood Council has had an election. Why would David Galaviz, for that matter anybody in City Government, want to have elections when they have conflict of interest influence on the Neighborhood Councils.
Getting back to Alicia's and Teresa project, remember the $1.5 million grant was just to purchase the property. On top of this they will also receive an estimated amount of an additional $5 million dollars of your taxes for building and tax credits for next five years to hire so-called marginalized workforce. This is just another farce by the politicians to give away your hard earned money.
Other projects that are occurring in Lincoln Heights is the building of 37 Low Income Units on a former EPA site on Sichel Street, under the 1805 Sichel LLC, headed by none other that City Housing Panelist John Huskey of Meta Housing. In this case the entire project is being funded 50% tax payer money and 50% from Wells Fargo. What a sweet deal. Can you ever imagine that someone in the Barrio could get this kind of funding, forget it you would have to be very well connected and you and your employees have to be generous donors to the illustrious sell out Latino Politicians?
More recently it was made known that a certain group of developers are planning to develop one of the largest parcels of open space in the City. Approximately 30 acres on a hill behind Lincoln High Schools Athletic Field, owned by Mee Yin Corp will have a gated community of 387 million dollar homes. 15 acres will be for the housing and 15 acres of property will be donated to the Santa Monica Mountain Conservatory. You say this is okay, think again. All land set aside for open space should be given to the City for Park Land that way it should never ever be used for anything but parks. But the game currently being played now is for non-profits such as the Conservatory to get the Land and then after a period of time they will also get rid of some of this Land for Development. The game is called Land Banking through the use of non-profits.
For those still interested in what is going on in our community you might also find it interesting that Mee Yin Corp is represented by City Lobbyist Steve Afriat, a former City Animal Regulation Commissioner who has represented the interest of Strip Club and Gay Bathhouses Owners in the City of Los Angeles. Steve Afriat is no light weight; a google search of him will give you an enormous amount of information of his dealings with former Councilmen Art Snyder, Richard Alatorre and Mike Hernandez. It would seem that is you want to win a council seat on you need Steve Afriat’s blessings and money sources.
How unfortunate that Lincoln Heights a founding member of the Chicano Movement in the late 60’s and 70’s is being converted into a cesspool of political misrepresentation, graft, unethical activity and corruption.
Zev just came out bashing everyone in current government for being too pro- development, to the cheers of the Neighborhood Council reps this weekend; are you saying his former Planning Deputy is also lobbyist for strip joints, gay bathhouses and the infamous goings-on in Lincoln Heights? Does he have any connection to this Afriat guy still? If any of this is true, Zev is being hypcritical to get attention -- but is he secretly jealous that as a supe he's been losing out on all these deals going on around town, and is playing anti-development/establishment to get elected, then will use Afriat and others to get his piece of pie?
What about Mike Antonovich? He'd be great.
L A Times has an expose on how Yvonne "Brentwood" Burke really resides in that ritzy burg, although she owns a townhouse in her district, where she goes to meet her official driver and spends five minutes there morning and night. A pretty tough report on her, almost encouraging the DA to file charges against her. What gives?
WHY must the same individuals constantly be the only choice? WHY must there never be a way to get rid of these corrupt, self serving politicians? WHY must the same old, same old constantly get recycled among different offices? This only facilitates the "special" relationships, "special" deals for and with "special" friends ....

6:51: Zev has been looking smaller for months, but sort of like he just shrank overall. (His wife has always stayed the same, kind of big...) Does this mean he's been running for a while?
But isn't the supe job pretty cushy, with little oversight and prying by media (until now, maybe). Does he just feel too neglected? What does he really want?
And if he gets Chick to bow out, to take his old job -- what if he runs and doesn't win? Isn't he counting AV out prematurely?

HOW? Perhaps by performing her job. Perhaps a person who represents an area or district is in the best position to understand and appreciate the needs of that area or district if they actually LIVE in that area or district ... but why would she want to live THERE??
It is long overdue time for ALL of these corrupt, self-serving, career con artists to be outed and ousted.

Antonio should take some lessons from Corina on dignity and class. She attended an event and admitted she was leary of going but thought about it and remembered she made a "committment." Knowing there was a possibly she would be asked numerous questioins about Antonio and Mirthala, Corina should real class and was a lady true to form. Only good things will happen for her future.
Even I don't think Zev is dumb enough to give up a lifetime spot with the pay and perks of a Supervisor to become the term limited Mayor of a zoo like L.A.

Ha Ha Ha!! Because things seem to be CHANGING! Or at least let's hope so!

Don't hold your breath waiting for the DA to take action against Yvonne Burke for living outside her district and being deceptive about it. This fact has been public information for many years, according to the Times article, yet the DA didn't care. And they didn't care that Nate Holden lived in Marina del Rey and not in his Council district. It was painful to watch Nate laugh about it after he was termed out. What's the purpose of having these laws if we're going to ignore them?
Wait a minute? Since when did we OK providing the Supervisors with drivers? How much does that cost and why do they need drivers? It isn't like Lindsay Lohan is on the board.

Gotta give Yvonne Burke credit for one thing, though: That's an awful lot of sneaking around, coming and going to and fro, in and out of cars and houses every day, for a woman who's almost 75. She must be pretty spry.
I couldn't really follow the Ch. 4 story on Laura. Sort of like she ended up blaming the City Council for not rejecting her paper, or at least not being more critical of it: but Rosendahl has it going before the Council next week, he says. Huh?
To why didn't the Times stalk the Mayor if they knew he was having an affair: What Burke did is ILLEGAL, and the article notes, a number of politicians have been prosecuted for that kind of fraud.
The Mayor cheating on his wife was a personal affair, until it turned out to be a reporter covering him, which raised some questions. But if she's guilty, so is Telemundo management, so they'll have to just reassign her, maybe out of the limelight for a while. AND she's going to get a nice severance package so she doesn't sue them for forcing her to report on the divorce after she'd told them. It seems the management enjoyed that cozy relationship while it lasted.
Zev is termed out in 2014. He is not going to run for mayor, but everyone knows he is gunning for the position of County CEO, aka King of Los Angeles County. In 2008 there will be a charter amendment to make the County CEO position permanent, which will likely pass. Then the County CEO will overstep his bounds and be called out on it by Zev, and he or his minions will call for making the position elected, with Zev helpfully running for that position in order to bring "continuity" there.
Zev's wife has always reminded me of Shiela Broflovski from South Park, by the way.
Does Laura Chick want to be County CEO? She announced she isn't running for CM after all. Does Zev like her?

Someone asked on the Methane/ Laura Chick thread, who does Zev think he's fooling with his bombastic "Let's take back our city" stump speech "to the choir," when he's turning Marina Del Rey into Miami, as the person says (throwing people out of their houseboats they've lived in, getting rid of affordable moorings, leaving only a few for the very rich), and he has been selling off the Santa Monica Mountains to the highest bidder, instead of giving it to the Conservancy at a reasonable rate?
Who does he think he is to act so superior, when he is all about maximizing profit "for the city," or is it, for HIS developers? And does he have a chauffeur, like Yvonna Burke (who is perfectly capable of driving her own car to her townhouse to sneak around and hide her tracks)? How many city cars for himself and his staff?
What is he running for? He should know that when you put yourself out there like that as a saint, you'd better be one, and he sure isn't.
