Alex Padilla has recovered from brain surgery and has returned home. The former Councilman turned State Senator underwent a procedure to remove a malformation of the brain on Saturday at a hospital in Anaheim. Padilla is expected to have a full recovery and return to the Senate in January. We here at the Sister City wish him the very best.United Teachers Los Angeles has backed incumbent school board member John Laurtizen for re-election to his San Fernando Valley district. Lauritzen will most likely go against an Antonio Villaraigosa sponsored challenger in the upcoming elections.
In other school board race news, LA Voice reports that outgoing member David Tokofsky is backing longtime activist Bennet Kayser. We reported previously that Kayser would be getting into the race.
A lawsuit filed by opponents of Mayor Villaraigosa's school takeover plan goes to trial Friday morning. A coalition of district parents, students, administrators and the League of Women Voters -- maintains the legislation is unconstitutional and infringes on the rights of voters. The plaintiffs want a judge to overturn Assembly Bill 1381, which was signed into law by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in September and gave the mayor the authority he wanted over the district.
Martini Republic points to an excellent David Zahnhiser piece in the current LA Weekly and finds that newly minted Councilman Jose Huizar "is scooping up cash from all the usual suspects." MR takes the view that Huizar has accomplished little for his district though the Councilman takes credit for establishing a bulky item pickup program in Eagle Rock.

U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, in a tough race for re-election this year against Rep. Michael Huffington, R-Santa Barbara, recently went undercover - sort of -to learn how easy it is for illegal aliens to get phony documents.
With a couple of Immigration and Naturalization Service agents trailing her, Feinstein walked through the MacArthur Park area to see how easy it would be to get a driver's license, a green card or other documents.
"I had an aide go through a few days before and she was approached by two dozen people offering papers," Feinstein said. "I was approached by three people offering phony IDs. There probably would have been more if it wasn't so obvious I was being followed."
Feinstein is pushing federal legislation that would lead to a counterfeit-proof identification card.
Political insiders don't think he will be able to return to the Senate as a result of his condition...

The former president of the union representing Los Angeles school workers was sentenced to six months in jail Thursday for illegally diverting union funds to the 2003 political campaign of disgraced Los Angeles City Councilman Martin Ludlow.

That's justice for you. Ludlow gets off with a wrist slap and Humphries gets sent to jail. Anyone who knows Humphries knows all too well that she did not have the capacity to mastermind this corruption. And some of these "workers" did not even step foot into Ludlow's campaign, they were working for Antonio's city council campaign in 2003. What is it with this Skelton/Ludlow/Antonio team that once again an older woman of some distinction gets left holding their dirty baggage - and in this case it means jail time. Can cowards be more aptly defined?
Since Antonio got Arnold to get his sister a judgeship, do you think he would call on him to commute this sentence? Shame , shame, shame!
Not that it will play a part, but the judge who will be hearing the case on AB1381 is the same judge who lost her election and was then appointed to her current seat by the Gov.

Even I, brilliant chap that I am, if you will, have a malformation of the brain. (Sigh) Perhaps that is a requirement for public office. Sots, are there any other public officials with malformations on the brain amongst you? I can think of three at this instant. One from the 'Catorce Quarter' of the city.
Anon, there is another with a malformation of the brain; Mr. Berkow (formerly of LAPD) whose sexual escapades made last evening's news. Apparently Mr. Berkow had a divan in his office in the police department. Sots, do any of you have divans, davenports or love slabs in your office?
I have a divine divan in my office, made of crushed maroon velvet. The only pussy that has ever graced the piece is my dear housecat. 'pon my very soul, she is perhaps the smartest of us all. Fellow citizens, I suspect that another large payout is in the works. Sots, send someone 'round to the Bon Adventure and find out how much per hour the flesh kneaders charge. Multiply that by one million and you should have the minimum payout amount.

At least Huizar didn't claim to start 80 FAKE NEIGHBORHOOD WATCHES
But don't buy all the campaign BS, and look at what he DID do.
When Pacheco ran against him 1+ years ago, some of his main criticisms about the previous 2 years when he was out of office were:
1) Bulky item dropoff area in Boyle had been shut down by AV, causing the streets to fill up with hundreds of dead sofas and busted TVs.
A few months into office, Huizar started the bulky item weekends all around the district (he was listening!)
2) AV hadn't spent enough (any) of the CD14 recycling center proceeds and other discretionary funds, and left $1-2 million in escrow, while telling people he was "broke."
Hardly a week goes by, Huizar hasn't had some $5K to $25K payout to deal with district needs, on the city council agenda, for approval (including the $20K for added Northeast patrols that the Dumm-Dumm-Dogg here was moaning about this week, saying "is that ALL for new cops"). NO, that came from recycling proceeds AV had left to rot.
Apparently, Huizar WAS reading Pacheco's campaign material, too.
3) Pacheco correctly pointed out AV avoided spending time in the district, as CM, like being there might actually make him SHORTER.
Huizar has been all over, since Day 1 -- and not just since being challenged for re-election like Homer "DOH" Parra claims. Look at the district photo gallery:

It shows 120+ in-district activities starting the week after he was sworn in. Many of these involved improvements his staff worked on for the district and/or funds allocated from district improvement monies, spread all around the district and nearly making up form AV's 2 years of negligence. That's at least 3-4 district outreach activities a week, others that were public gatherings never produced photos.
That's more work "in district" in less than 12 months than AV did in two years (and since, as mayor).
That's just a few areas of last year's complaints . . . MY biggest complaint about Huizar is that he wasted taxpayer's money paying A. Parra back for campaign dirt-dishing with a city job (he wasn't any good at), in constituent service.
Does anyone really think Ludlow would have accepted a plea that did not include a recommendation for NO JAIL TIME!?

If the "Huizzy Cut and Pasters" are any indication, then Huizzy will be summons to a meet and confer with Parke and "HIS POLLONESS". Huizzy is going to have a hard time "threading the needle" between exerting his "self idenity"( can't think of one). But also, he needs to maintain his relationship(indenture servitude) to "HIS POLLONESS", for the continuing flow of cash. An interesting danamic in this race would be the +,- rating of "HIS POLLONESS". If "TEAM HUIZZY" has already ascertain that the mayor is polling in the Negative, Then this race will become a referedum on the legacy of "HIS POLLONESS". If this the case, "HOMER ALVIN" should plaster CD 14 with pictures of POLLO and HUIZZY in the minds of CD 14 voters. CD 14 voters are a lot that will buck the "annoited one" and occasional "CARPET BAGGER"(Victor Griego). For Alvin this is his last chance to get to the "Big Leagues".

It's not like he can retreat to what's left of the Pacheco camp after playing loose and dirty with old debunked news clippings, last-minute dropped on thousands of doorsteps, to help Huizar get elected -- even if he has now pissed off the current powerbase in the district.
After doing Parke and Huizar's dirty work against Pacheco a year ago, he decided that wasn't enough of a base of enemies, so he starting talking smack about Huizar(even while still on the payroll).
In CD14, Merton don't know shit. Parra IS an island, politically, and that island is called St. Helena, for this wannabe, rubber-room Napolean.
And just wait until Parqe starts in detailing the LA32 NC debacle, the year before, when Parra's little-man complex led him to try an administrative takeover of the board, one that almost got his local advisory board decertified. His imprint are all over DONE's "dysfunctional" NCs memorandum of a few weeks ago. It should have been named after him.
They're coming to take you away, Alvin, and it's not to the victory party.
After this, he won't even be able to sell rundown real estate.
Someone has that LA32 neighborhood council meeting on video where the DONE G.M. embarrassed Parra and he had to retreat like a whipped puppy. How long before that's on YouTube?

Alvin should have been intimdated by the fact that 99 percent of the voters in the district; 1) hate his slimy little triple-dealing, back-stabbing guts; 2) have never heard of him, or never will (he only got 100 votes or so when he ran for neighborhood council, in his OWN community; what's THAT tell you); or 3) hate him AND have never heard of him.

Today, when I was speaking about an agenda item on "tract maps", today, at the Council meeting, I mentioned that due to several I.C.O.'s (Interim Control Ordinances) regarding the rampant condo-conversion craze in Los Angeles, and how the LA Planning Dept presented a 40 page report that says Council has been ignoring rules in the books, regarding all this "special interest funded" development, Eric Garcetti, followed-up ZD's public comment by saying, "Not all tract maps are for condo-conversions, I'm not sure what these are for, but..."
EXCUSE ME...That's the point ZD was making, it didn't say what they were for on the agenda (problem one), and I was reminding council that if they were in violation of condo conversion laws, please vote, "No."
BUT WHAT THE REAL PROBLEM IS, IS THAT COUNCILMEMEBER ERIC GARCETTI ADMITTED HE WAS VOTING ON SOMETHING (TRACT MAPS) AND HE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT THEY WERE FOR.
MAJOR PROBLEM, DUDE! AND THAT IS THE PROBLEM. So don't begrudge, Big ZD, and make public comments in your two-member committee meeting (regarding restricts for public comment speakers) and say, "some people who show up every day because they like to see themselves on TV."

Tack on the fact that "Special Event Fee Waiver" abuse actually seems to be on "hiatus", if not "permanant vacation", and there's a lot to celebrate at the Lava Lounge Sunday. Today was spent in court with legal eagles representing LAUSD and the Mayors take over team. Good drama and many laughs.
But one thing is clear, this judge is no ones political hack.

Yes, about a decade ago, and Alatorre was WAY damaged goods, by then.
Parra would have to have some MAJOR Skeltons in the closet, and I don't mean "Huizar took a vacation to Japan," or, "he didn't hire enough field deputies" bullshit.
Those skeltons would have to be the bones of dead little girls, or live little boys (with verifiable DNA), if you get my drift, or Huizar can phone it in -- using Parra's own cell phone.
People who really know CD14 know that Huizar has less of a challenge than the councilmembers elsewhere running unopposed this time. They have to defend 4 years; he only has to account for ONE (at least a part of which, Parra was in CHARGE of one of Huizar's field offices).

What's unfortunate about the CD 14 race is it will show how horrible Latinos can divide themselves and their voice with dirt. It will shed a negative light on the district itself and the ugliness of revenge, bitterness and vindictiveness. Politics is an ugly business and to think someone like Parra who is the worst human being on this earth and who admitted to horrible politicital tactics can now be running is horrendous.
It's the end of 2006 and we are about to have another local election in Cd14.
