Attacking the Messenger? WWG At It Again

The old dead, Republican mayor dropping in for a moment with a thought on the latest ramblings of our favorite Westside white guy writing in Joe Mailander's favorite (not) local blog-o-fishwrap.

In Sunday's Daily News, new writer Tony Castro pens the story of the creation of the man once known as Tony Villar, now Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Our favorite chablis drinking limousine liberal - who stops for a moment his fantasies of running the Los Angeles Times - decides to (LA) observe not what is correct or not correct in Castro's story, but essentially dredges up every aspect of Castro's past, including the claim that the writer allegedly once worked as a female impersonator. Is that necessary? What happened to liberal tolerance, diversity, etc.?

K-Rod posits that Castro is yet another tool of the eastside anti-Villar cut and paste crew. But if anyone looks more like a tool, in this case, it may be the WWG himself.

How does it feel to used Kev?

Kevin Roderick is pissed because last week his major kiss ass story on Antonio was on the cover of LA Magazine. Now Kevin looks like the idiot for doing a puff piece.
E-mails are flying thanking Castro for writing a piece on the truthj that many knew about Antonio's family life. This goes to show Antonio's ignorance and naivety of how to deal with the media. Seems like the honeymoon is over. Good for You Tony Castro. Why isn't Kevin attacking any other reporter like the LA Slimes ones who write negative stuff on our midget mayor???

k-ROD IS A TOOL FOR AV. KROD YOUR ATTACK PIECE WAS LAME.

WHO CARES IF CASTRO DID SUCH ACTIONS IN THE PAST. I'M HAPPY TO KNOW HE IS NOT IN CHARGE OF PROPOSING 1 BILLION FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING.

I CAN'T SAY THAT ABOUT AV, HE'S DERANGED AND CONFUSED AND HE'S IN CHARGE OF MILLIONS OF CITY DOLLARS. I AM CONCERNED THAT WE VOTED IN A LUNATIC AND LIAR IN OFFICE. I FEEL DUPED.

HIS 1 BILLION AFFORDABLE HOUSING SCAM IS ONE OF MANY SCAMS. WHAT ELSE CAN WE DIG UP IF WE GO FURTHER ON THIS. IM AFRAID TO FIND OUT.

I don't think Kevin was being used, this e-mail on Tony Castro has floated around for years.

I think Ron Kaye is the one with egg on his face for hiring this guy.

Plus anyone with a nexis account can very easily find this story.

The question remains can LA trust a someone who has a history of plagerism?

Nevermind he likes to dress like women, thats his private life.

Do you know how easy it is to get dirty on a scribe? Hell, I even heard Steve Hymon wears pantyhose...

Hey, by the way, it's much harder to investigate actual politicians than it is the looseleaf life of your basic scribe. I guess that's why K-Rod goes for the low-hanging fruit while kissing office-holder ass; it's way easier for the bully in him to publish muckraking pieces on journos than it is to say something tough about a pol.

Joseph,

I wouldn't the call the piece in question from the Columbia school of journalism "muckraking"

Unless you were talking about the Castro piece on the Mayor -- that is total "muckraking" there is no truth to any of it.

Actually, it was David Zahniser’s recent reporting at the Weekly that reminded me of Jill. His piece on the local government’s questionable handling of Miguel Contreras’ death was the kind of story the Weekly used to spike, but that Jill would’ve run with during her years at New Times LA. And then her name came up in Harold Meyerson’s parting blast at the Weekly, inspired by his disgust at Zahniser’s story. To argue that his beloved progressive LA Weekly was dead, Meyerson made connections among the Contreras story, the Weekly’s new ownership (the former publishers of New Times LA, which bought the Weekly’s parent company and appropriated its name, Village Voice Media), and his recollections of Stewart, who was the alternative to the alternative media during the height of the Weekly’s progressive era.

Like some others, I have been struck by the words used in various reports on Jill Stewart’s hiring — words like “ideological” and “agenda-driven,” which Kevin Roderick used in LA Observed. The syntax of these citations makes it unclear whether Roderick was airing his personal opinion, or taking the temperature of the LA journalistic/political world. There’s no question that’s what a lot of people say about her. You might think I’m being disingenuous, but I am baffled by it, in the same way I was baffled by the negative reaction to Zahniser’s journalism.

You are a bastion of fact and relevance.

Go ahead then and follow Wacko Walter and his race-baiting supporters all the way to irrelevancy-ville.

Okie dokie. Let's play the shame game. "Better than you" has an ego problem. Someone here hit you below the belt with words. What is it? Any shortcomings.

Why don't you, Boi from Troi and I go out and have a drink? AV can handle it without you. Your a dime a dozen.

Dear anonymous 12:25, that just shows how pathetic you are. When I was at Columbia, they taught us to go after elites and people in power, not after our own class of lowly scribes. Why don't you take yours and Roderick's Cal State Nowhere J degrees and shove them up your respective asses?

Well Mailander,

I am all for going after the powerful, but if you have irresponsible journalist doing it then its both a disservice to both your fellow journalists and the reading public.

I think Castro's judgement is suspect, especially considering his entire story had no factual evidence to support his thesis.

And to be fair, i've always respected your work Joseph.

OK, thanks. But I think you need to name precisely how Castro was irresponsible. I read a very credible story, twelve years removed from any previous problems.

Also, as far as we know, the Daily News is standing by its story. The DN has good editors.

Is there anything specifically you and your pal Roderick can point to that's wrong with the story? Or are you just trying to slime it via that weakest rhetorical device of all, the ad hominem?

Remember, I'm an Antonio cheerleader. But me, I think a guy like Castro is perfectly suited to write a story on the Myth of Tony Villar. I don't know why the Mayor's office would have such a problem with that, unless they were nailed dead to rites and thought they needed to slime the scribe rather than refute the claims.

Tony, you can't handle the truth. Anyone who has known you for over 20 years knows the truth and it's wild compared to the article in the Daily News. I wish someone would do an investigative article on why you changed your last name.

If David Zahniser had written the story no one would be complaining and Kevin wouldn't have investigated him. But because it was Tony all of a sudden the tables are turned and Kevin does a hit piece because heaven forbid anyone do a negative piece on Antonio that big. Wake up Kevin..The city is finally waking up to the mess Antonio has made and the things he should have done and didn't. There will be more of these stories so are you going to investigate all those reporters?

The story Tony Castro wrote is true, anyone who has followed Antonio knows it and the mayor only has himself to blame. He's the one who made it up and told it.

Everyone in the 14th district knows he's a liar. He campaigned for the city council seat telling everyone he would not leave mid-term and run for mayor. And he did. He told the same stories about his family Castro wrote about while he ran for the seat. I met people who knew him growing up and knew his father. They were afraid to come forward and confront him about the stories/lies he was telling because they knew how he would try to destroy them and their families if they did...

Tony Castro knew what would happen if he wrote the story. Now that he's back in the saddle, and all the trash on him is out, I hope he goes further into these elected officials lives and lies and continues to get the truth out on the two faced bastards.

LAObserved has done Castro a favor, not the mayor.

Sometimes some of you are so retarded. How would changing your last name erase your bad credit? Are you saying he stopped down on 5th Street and bought himself a new Social Security card and just gave up his old life and benefits to be able to get a loan for a car??
