Safe Surrender Bill Vetoed
Following endorsement last week the LA City Council of state legislation that would extend the "safe surrender" period for mothers who wish to give up their children, Governor Schwarzenegger has vetoed the measure. The law, AB 1873 authored by Assemblyman Alberto Torrico (D-Fremont) would allow parents to surrender a child to a hospital, fire station or police station - without reprecussion - up to 30 days after birth.
Despite the endorsement of the Council, LA County Supervisors opposed the measure, saying the current 72 hour waiting period is sufficient. Well this old, dead Republican Mayor thinks on this one, our City Council got it right. Those dinosaurs at the County have rejected a "pro-life" bill that would have led to fewer babies winding up in dumpsters. Without this legislation, more children will be abanonded and likely die and many others will remain in environments where they can not be properly cared for.
Great going Don Knabe!

Seventy-two hours? Let's make it 18 years! Not only would this be safer for children, but it could encourage better behavior: "Junior, you either clean up your room or Mummy's dropping you off at the Fire Department -- for keeps!"

How is Knabe the one to blame? He is the 2nd most conservative vote on that board? Who was the 3rd vote that didn't endorse it?
