Democrats waking up nationally, asleep at the wheel locally

Ever since Bill Clinton's pushback of Fox News a few weeks ago the Democratic Party has seen an overall surge in the polls. In fact, most people with more than 2 brain cells firing believe that the Democratic Party is set to take back the House and has a legitimate shot at he Senate. If predictions hold true on election night the Democratic Party will ride a tidal wave from Florida to Arizona... Where they will wash ashore and fall flat as they approach the California border.

A few days ago I spoke about Byron DeLear, a Congressional candidate for the 28th District and criticized his Democratic opponent for not even running a campaign. For not showing the voters the respect of a discussion. But Howard Berman isn't the only one.

As for California Democrats campaigning, forget about it. Let's take a look around.

In the 25th CD Robert Rodriguez is running against Howard "Buck" McKeon and putting on a decent show, without any help from the party at all. But at least he is trying.

In the 38th Assembly District Democrat Lyn Shaw is doing her part to run an invisible campaign against Republican Cameron Smyth. You'll remember how heated that Primary race against Jim Alger was with Alger contending that all Shaw wanted was to win the Primary and then not run. Smyth has been running TV ads for weeks and his lawn signs are already up. Looks like Alger called that one.

Over in the 37th Assembly District which splits Ventura and Los Angeles Counties the Ferial Masry campaign has yet to call or canvas the Los Angeles portion of the district because they are waiting for the Los Angeles Democratic Party to provide the voter database CD. They have been waiting on Eric Bauman since the primary.

In the 24th Congressional District Democrat Jill Martinez's campaign has all but imploded. She has refused to hone a message despite the fact that her opponent Elton Gallegly dropped out of the race and jumped back in.

One would have to think that if any of these campaigns took themselves seriously, or if the Democratic Party took them seriously, there could be an interesting discussion on issues, and a debate of philosophy. Moreover with the RNC meltdown in high gear the Democrats SHOULD have been able to take some of that momentum into California.

To be fair, it isn't the candidates fault in many cases. It is the party, and moreover the party structure on both sides. In the races I listed, Masry for example is running a very strong challenge to Audra Strickland in Ventura but C'mon guys if Bauman doesn't take you guys seriously enough to spend 60 bucks on a CD of LA voters then go get it yourselves!

So is my point that Democrats should win? No. My point is that the voters lose when the parties refuse to enter into any real discussion. When running for office becomes about personal power, real or perceived.

Today I picked on the Democrats, because with all that is going on in the world it has never been easier for them and even still, they are asleep at the wheel. But my own Republican Party is no better. We aren't backing anyone against Alarcon, Berman, Padilla... The list goes on. The people should demand better of their political parties. We are entitled to a fair and legitimate debate of various issues. It is high time we get it.

25,000 LA Democrats can change California politics

Hard to believe? How could only 25,000 in LA out of 6.7 million registered Democrats in the entire state of California, change everything?

Councilman John

Just look at the money pouring into Fabian Nunez and Gil Cedillo...
Have you seen any campaign stuff from them? Where is all the recorded campaign expenditures going to if no campaign is being waged? It looks to me that they are funneling money through these campaign shells to someone's pockets....

CJ - That is all anything is about, personal power. Eric wants to be state party chair and plans on ramming his way in any way he can.

He talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk at all. He talks about candidates running hard (as Alger did in AD38 but supports those who he owes favors to (such as Shaw in AD38). Of course now no campaign is being run and the people of the district suffer as a result.

He talks about some big plan to fund red districts but as you said can't even deliver a CD to AD37.

No, all he is doing is collecting favors. The party has completely forgotten about the people. Not that the Republicans are any better but the Democratic party is in some really sad shape. Arnold is going to mop the floor with Phil.

The Democrats aren't asleep, just thinking that they've already won and resting on their laurels and presuming they have my vote. Mike Ten looks pretty good these days...for a Republican.

Yes, you are so right about Robert Rodriquez. He is trying. He is fighting one of the most right-winged of the GOP - a favorite of the neo-cons.

McKeon's record on the environment is zero. He votes pro-Bush almost always. He gave from his campaign war chest generously to support his buddy Tom DeLay and after stripping environmental legislation to one-sixth of the protection it sought to provide for the Eastern Sierra, he is now pushing the remaining environmental wreckage in order to get elected. Until recently, he thought he had no need for a war chest, but suddenly he's realized that he's got an unexpected war on his hands.

Robert is a personable young man and a viable candidate. He will give McKeon a run for his money even though he has very little money of his own - sort of a David and Goliath.

Alger is missing in action for the Democratic Party. A lot of talk about support and activism but the minute It is not about him he disappears.
If the Shaw campaign is ineffective then why does the on- line poll at the Signal show her beating Smythe at 62% to 32% with several thousand respondents. Alger lost Sam get over it you slimy dead republican.

I think the Democratic Party refused Alger's help. They were so offended that a newbie had the balls to run against a long time party person, they can't get over it.

The San Fernando Valley Democrats are a sad bunch anyway. Cutthroat and cliquish. It's no wonder they don't get anything done. They are just a bunch of sheep.

I heard that when someone on the board spoke against Berman because of his record and they had a vote, only about 10 out of 100 would stand up againt him. Do they truly believe it is okay for a Democrat to have that opinion or were they just scared to have anyone see them voting against him?

Sheep I tell you.

3:55 PM If you think left wing-nut Shaw is getting 62% of the vote in right wing-nut land, there is some use of illegal substances taking place over in the Shaw camp.

As a follow-up for readers of this thread, Lyn Shaw has received 38% of the vote. The exact amount as the last democrat who literally went on vacation 2 weeks before the election.

Wow -- Impressive huh?
