City Hall: Riddled With Corruption
The man on the five-dollar bill once said, "government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth." Well, it may not have perished from the earth, but here in L.A., we now have government of the special interests, by the special interests and for the special interests.Two stories in today's L.A. Times about City Hall provide case studies:
The first article, by Patrick McGreevy, details how Building and Safety has a special unpublicized bureau that provides platinum-level service to the politcally well-connected. Permits that would normally take nine months take only five -- if you're among those lucky enough to cross the velvet rope into the exclusive club. The second article, by Steve Hymon, reveals that the so-called "City Government Responsibility, Lobbying and Ethics Reform Act," which was supposedly proposed by the League of Women Voters, was, in fact, drafted by a LAW FIRM THAT REPRESENTS LOBBYISTS!!!
Now, in view of the ethical duties of attorneys -- I know, that sounds like an oxymoron -- whom do YOU think the draft legislation will benefit: the public, or the law firm's clients? Unless you graduated from the People's Law School, you know the correct answer is "the law firm's clients."
Now you know why, as the City Attorney pointed out, the measure actually WEAKENS ethics laws, and why it is drafted to hide the fact that it lets City Council Members serve 12 years rather than eight. Regardless of your political ideology, we should all be able to agree that corruption and dishonesty are wrong, and are grounds to "throw the bums out." City Hall suffers from the political equivalent of a massive termite infestation. Voters need to "tent" the building at the polls in November and again in March.

You just gave the voters of LA two good reasons to get rid of these clowns. Word around the city is many people lost respect for Garcetti because of his arrogance at city council meeting when questioning Rocky. He was condensending and rude. He was soooo desperate to have the measure passed when Rocky stated neighborhood councils were not informed Eric shot back at him very defiant.
Good job by the Times to shine the light on these cockroaches. Not sure if this will translate into any meaningful, desperately needed reform. Garcetti and the rest of the buffoons are still fiddling.
VOTE NO on the term limits extension/corruption-enhancement measure and VOTE NO on the billion dollar housing developer-payoff bond.
As the time professionally writes 'Garcetti unavailable to comment', I became even more disappointed in him. He prepared so well and long for his joke of a challenge to Rocky during council, and he chooses to avoid responding to the LA Times. I am even more disappointed that he decided to hide the fact that the law firm crafted the language, and he recruited so much of his speically treated constituents to testify on behalf of him and the measure. Unfortunately, I don't think his behavior will sway how the fake superficial progressives (opposed to real progressives who believe in justice) are still in love with his 'silver spoon' image.

Eric Garcetti looks really really bad. People are talking about his horrible Q&A with Rocky and how obvious he made it seem they were desperate to do anything to put measure on ballot. The vote on the ballot measures is in November, and the vote for even-numbered City Council seats is in March. If any of you out there want to run for those seats, start NOW. You have until November to file, but why wait, after all?
Silver Spoon Garcetti is extremely politically calculated in everything he does. His miltary service is a political ploy as is much else he does.
Unforuntately, on this issue he got busted. Now he is seen for the political scum bag he is.
Don't waste your time running for those offices. They have too much money and being an incumbant generally allows them a win. In addition, Antonio will endorse them all.
The better option is to actually hold them to their jobs, and pressure them to actually get things done. That will make their lives miserable and not allow them to take fluff trips to Beruit or whereever else they want to start a sister city.
Actually, that is another issue. Zine and Garcetti head off to Beruit...but don't have the balls or sense to actually address the current situation going on right now. Now that L.A. is a sister city, why don't we be sisterly and actually say something.
