Who Do You Love? -- For City Council, That Is
Some of you have posted various statements for or against various candidates for Council District 14 and other positions. Unfortunately, the remarks sometimes come across as "insider baseball," to borrow a phrase recently used by one City Council Member, for those of us unfamiliar with the candidates and sub-local issues.
So let me ask you a favor: please explain, to the rest of us, why you support or oppose various candidates. Give us a primer. If you could provide facts and concrete examples of misconduct, rather than just engaging in name-calling, so much the better.
The election for the even-numbered districts are in March, though people can wait as late as November to file to run.
Thanks in advance for enlightening the rest of us.

CD 12 wants Jim Alger! he has proven to have the balls to stick to his guns and fight for what is right no matter how much the CD12 Staffer assholes attack him.

Jim "let's raise the trash fees" Alger is just like the rest of the tax and spend city council. All of the city council except Smith voted to raise the trash fees. Candidate Alger also believed in raising trash fees to pay for city services.
Chief Bratton for Mayor. Agreed get rid of all the clowns on council and bring back some of the old ones who knew how to act mature and adult. At least they had intelligent discussions not this crap now. They also had respect from public comment people.

We can't have a complete overhaul next election, but we can replace HALF of the City Council, i.e., those in even-numbered districts.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich said his county spends nearly $1 billion each year to provide public safety, health care and other social services for illegal immigrants. He said about 12 percent of Los Angeles County's 10.2 million residents and about 25 percent of the county jail's inmates are illegal immigrants.

I'm gay.
My money says nobody of any consequence goes up against Huizar next year -- he skates, just like he did for school board last year, especially after the trouncing of Pacheco and 8-10 others last time.
Not that this is necessarily a good thing. It just is, what it is.
It's been too short a time for anyone to be able to make anything "bad" about him stick, and he will be "effectively" unopposed in 2007.

Anyone but Jose. He hasn't done shit for CD14 and he's just an Antonio puppet. There are a lot of people who voted for him and who Jose lied to and burned. Just like AV did when he ran for mayor. Now those people are pissed off and will back anyone else but Jose. There are some candidates scrambling still waiting to see what happens in the next two months. Jose doesn't have it locked it like he thinks.

Give me a break. Smith didn't vote against the trash fee when the Council considered the budget. He only voted against it during the B&F Cmte considered the budget, then when the trash fee was considered last week. By doing so, he can claim that he voted for or against the fee, depending on the audience he's speaking to at the time.
Shades of John Kerry with that political move.

Jim "let's raise the trash fees" Alger, advocated we raise the trash fees to pay for city services.
Jim "I am on the Green Energy Commision for the City" Alger, advocated for Green Energy. Now the DWP is raising rates and one of their reasons is the increase in cost due to green energy.
We are getting squeezed from all sides and Alger is part of the problem. The City revenues increased by $700 Million but we are still paying more.
Alger's only solution to problems is your bank account. BEWARE....

Alger DID NOT support raising the trash fees for any other purpose and certainly opposed the raising of fees by 7 bucks. Where were you 5:31 when that happened?
Alger estimated a 2 to 3 dollar increase in trash fees during his campaign. He sat on the Green Energy Commission for the City and now we are facing higher energy cost due to their policies. Alger's policies.
$700 Million increase in revenue and he was asking for more. All the senior citezens in CD-12 should beware. Alger wants part of your fixed income.

No word yet on whether Jim Alger, the man who went toe-to-toe with the DWP over a rate increase, is taking the tour. But it was a little jolting to see him earlier this summer walking down the First Street steps alongside several DWP reps and Mayor Hahn for a press event announcing the creation of an environmental panel. Hahn appointed Alger, and another neighborhood-council leader, to his “green ribbon” commission.
Like a seasoned City Hall insider, Alger thanked Hahn and the City Council, then said he had a message not for neighborhood councils, but for DWP ratepayers. “You will be in the forefront of my and everyone else’s mind here,” Alger said.

Do NOT accuse me of doing anything less then defending ratepayers of this city and working to keep rates down. The Green Ribbon Commission has not had one recomendation taken that has cost the city 10 cents because the commission was disbanded when Mayor Hahn lost the election.
I was attacked by Labor for not supporting increased fees so I'll be dammed if I am going to let you hit me for raiding the piggy bank of constituents.
My Sunshine Canyon Plan (which was really the NVC's plan) called for raising trash fees between $1.00 to $1.50 period. 100% of that money was going to pay for the exact service the City was getting, placing our trash someplace other than Sunshine Canyon, a landfill located just a few hundred yards from LA's water supply.
The "senior citizens of CD 12" have just been shafted by an increase over 10 times what I called for and not one dime of it is going to trash.
Oh and I forgot one other thing, most people on fixed incomes were exempt from the increase.

So Alger placed the Green Commission on his resume during the campaign knowing full well it was a do nothing commission.
That is a violation of truth in advertising.
Alger also called for an increase in trash fees. His plan would have cost taxpayers $31 Million a year at a time when the economy was strong and the city took in an additional $700 Million in revenues.
Yes taxpayers watch your wallet with Alger. He will pick your pocket and smile at you the whole time.
Alger look at Walter Moore's latest post. He calls out the city Council for spending more money to dump trash and failing to close the dump. Your plan was not much different. They pander to the voters, you pander to the voters.
He is basically calling them a bunch of bone heads. Take a look in the mirror because you are a bone head also.
If a woman will run then why not Elena Popp? She's the antithesis of an insider and she's not afraid to stand up to the mayor.
Full disclosure, I volunteered on her Assembly campaign against Kevin de Leon. The reason I did is that she never backed away from a question and wasn't afraid to give a nuanced answer. I like Kevin, but I heard a lot more soundbites than substance.
Elena Popp would be more of a natural to succeed Garcetti, but her campaign HQ was in CD 14. Why not?

Nick is not going to run against Jose.
Nick wanted to finish HIS work. Now that two councilmembers have screwed up his work why would he come back.
Yeah, he had (and has) the balls to stand up to Antonio and his cronies, but having balls isn't enough. He was a lone soldier against the machine and lost.
He put up with all the bullshit allegations from Parke Skelton's media machine and the DA's attacks, but I don't see him doing that again soon.
BTW he was dead on right about Antonio raising taxes and now they want to raise more taxes (housing bond).
These city hall democrats are living up to the old cliche of being "tax and spend" politicians.
