Is L.A. "seamy" or "seemy" (or just close to Simi?)
It isn't often that we take an e-mail sent to us and just copy the whole thing directly into a new thread, but to be honest with you I don't think I could have written this much better! Here goes...
At first I thought maybe it was more outcry on the homeless situation and skidrow, or a late sweeps-week item on the SFV porn industry, but when it first jumped out from the lacity.org site under "Los Angeles Highlights" this just didn't look right --
"seemyLA.com"
(the official visitor information site for L.A., operated by LA INC.)
http://www.seemyla.com/index.jsp
For people who read too fast, or maybe dropped out of LAUSD and don't spell all that well, this "LA, Inc." information site may not make too much sense until you actually see the graphics download, and then understand that someone wants you to "See-my-LA" -- and that whoever planned the campaign perhaps doesn't have a real good grasp on how "seemyLA" looks and/or sounds in the "real" online world of no-caps, no-bold, no varying type fonts, where people spell phonetically (if they even bother to), and "seemy" may look a lot more like "seamy" than "See My".
Itsnotthefirsttimegraphicsdesigners

lowercasejammedtogetherasoneword
worldoftheinternetactuallyendsup

If you get my drift?
Maybe someone should have bothered to buy an "underscore" from Pat Sajak's Wheel of Fortune (or looked at the Web address and all concievable outside links to it with an outsider's POV, before launching a site to get non-Angelenos to visit L.A. using a word combination that is both a look-alike and HOMOPHONE for one stereotype the city enjoys in much of the country.
Seamy LA
If one of those porn producers was smart, they'd buy up the www.seamyla.com domain, and start raking up eyeballs from even more illiterates. . .

I can't believe some web-head, or techie putting the online portion of this all together didn't flag this for the "creatives" (if they would listen), and say... "do you KNOW what this looks like as a URL, or link from another site?"
I'm sure everyone was just "following orders."

Seamy LA

Yeah but you don't see the graphic here from the link, so it does look funny at first. I'll bet some techies did notice taht and passed it through for the joke value.

Don't you get it, this was intentional. It's like "stays in Vegas."
See my seamy L.A.

Simi is pretty seamy, too. All those off duty L.A. cops rolling around in their monster trucks looking for a good time.
