Mayor Sam's Morning Update

Two new entries enter the LA Blogosphere. One is the Sherman Oaks Blog, which focuses mainly around issues of interest to the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council and the ever powerful Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association. However, this blog has potential to be a great chroncile of daily life in the south San Fernando Valley.

The other is by real estate mogul, C. Frederick Wehba, II, of the Bentley-Forbes real estate investment firm, most recently noted for purchasing Washington's legendary Watergate Hotel. Wehba was recently featured in an article by Boi From Troy.

LA Observed is (LA) observing yet another cheesecake photo of former LA journo Sharon Tay. Oh, I guess the reason was something to do with her being canned by MSNBC. I guess traffic from Google is down.

If you play music CDs released by Sony Records on your computer, some of the titles may be downloading a certain piece of tracking software to your hard drive, without your knowledge. This software is part of their anti-copying system, but the software also allegedly uses your internet connection to report back to sony your IP address and the songs you are playing. Some anti-spyware programs are finding this program. The Electronic Frontier Foundation reports more on it here.

Speaking of Boi From Troy, he has a "new project" in the works. I think I know what it is, but I'm not telling. Anyone care to speculate?

The big Pajamas Media launch is happening tomorrow at a fabulous New York gala opening, at which they will unveil their new name, Open Source Media. Among many other bloggers, Mayor Sam and Pajamas Media did have discussion, and an offer was floated our way. We won't go into the details, but we decided the dough wasn't worth selling our soul. I can't tell how much they "offered" but I can say it was less per week than what I made in 1981 as a teenager working at McDonalds. So, we'll stay independent for now, and we'll probably miss the bus, but what the heck. At least we can keep selling ads to Jim Alger.

Mayor Villaraigosa will once again appear on the "Ask the Mayor" segment on KCAL 9 Wednesday night, 9:00 p.m. Also on his agenda, the Mayor will receive the "Man of the Year" award from the Boyle Heights College Institute at a dinner at Our Lady of Angels Cathedral.

If you're interested, Wednesday Councilman Garcetti will announce something called "A Transgendered Day of Remembrance."

I've asked several organizations that have been in Boyle Heights longer then 10 years and not one of them have ever heard of BH college Institute. Gee, no wonder Antonio is getting man of the year, Jose is chairman of the dinner. What B.S.!!!

They don't seem to have a website but I found some information about them at Volunteer Match:

The mission of the Boyle Heights College Institute is to provide youth in the Boyle Heights Area of Los Angeles in grades 3 - 12 with the skills necessary to enroll and succeed in college through academic, parental, and mentoring support.

There are many small non-profits throughout every community in LA. Just because they're not on the mainstream radar doesn't mean they don't exist or don't do good work. I happen to know several that few have heard about but make a big impact. One way they get the notoriety is by holding events such as this which, by the way, serves as a fundraiser for the agency where the honorees are just the bait for donors.

You are absolutely right, and honestly I don't think anything is wrong with that, if it furthers the mission of a worthy cause.

I agree with you however, please giving an award to a mayor who is nothing more than a photo opportunist is ridiculous. I've heard this morning people are angry that Antonio was a do nothing councilman in Boyle Heights yet they choose to honor him as "man of the year." That's insulting.

9:57 - Don't you think the Pacheco Coffee Klutch might have a slightly biased opinion?

Is a "Coffee Klutch" a purse that you keep your Starbucks cards in, or just a really tight grip on your Grande Mocha Latte?

(Or maybe it's that far-left pedal on the floor of the truck that delivers the dark roast... right next to the brake?)

Are all AV-lovers LAUSD dropouts?

I believe the term is "Klatch" - from the German "Klatsch" meaning "gossip" and used to denote a group or informal gathering where conversation takes place.

"Klutch" isn't in Websters.

Nah, you remember "Klutch", Jane Fonda got an Oscar for her overrated performance in that movie, right Archie Bunker?

Oh, yeah, how terrible to publish cheesecake photos of Sharon Tay. They should be ashamed of themselves. How declasse.
