Puffery

Puffery: puff·er·y (pŭf'ə-rē)
n.
Flattering, often exaggerated praise and publicity, especially when used for promotional purposes.

Or as Steve Hymon in the LA Times defines it:

"The problem: As soon as one council member lauds an honoree, others jab their "request to speak" buttons, unable to resist the gravitational pull of their microphones."

Couldn't have summed it up better ourselves...

Thank you Steve Hymon of LA Times. Great story on the council members wasting our time. He reports the facts.

Right now Antonio is at council in front of cameras during presentation. He needs to spend more time at his desk doing real work.

"If you can't say no to your friends and supporters, you don't deserve to be mayor," James said. "Jim Hahn's never said no to his contributors."

Campaign spokesman Nathan James said the councilman never discussed airport concessions during his Miami fund-raisers.

I agree. It was outrageous, and where is ethics on this one? And that bitch Laura Chick, who only investigates selected people...

Yep, those concessioners just gave him money because they thought he was a nice guy and would be a good mayor. They had no thoughts of LAX concessions.

And if you believe that, I have a bridge in LA for you to buy. Opps, hope Richard Murello reads this blog. He'll buy it up immediately.

NO ONE is voting for the school bond for LAUSD. Jose has built enough schools, and made enough campaign money. Here is a theme song,

Huizar is the name,
I play the drop out game,
my deals are sealed and made,
with meruelo there's no shame,
you people just don't mind,
if I'm here to buy a dime,
the kids know who I am,
the man who stole their dreams,
and made their parents scream,
Huizar is the name,
you will not look at me the same,
this song will have to groove,
until election day and I lose.

This song is dedicated to all the kids the were shortchanged from proper education at LAUSD under Jose Huizar's mismanagement and for having them endure the political bullshit of contamidated sites, ripped off land deals, and incompetent administration.

Adios,

I am finding most of the Neighborhood watches by calling Hollenbeck and Northeast pretending to live in different neighborhoods, it's working. I don't want to call the Villaraistas mainly because i think they will feed me biased info. (Chief Faker - April 15, 2005)

On topic? Let's get real. There's all this talk about Council being powerful and the Mayor's office being weak, but most of the time you wouldn't know it by watching Council in "action." I mean, how boring does chamber have to be for there to be motions limiting puffery?

Garcetti is the Council's de facto CLA. He gets good reports from his staff and he penetrates issues beyond the executive summaries. A lot of Council is simply following his lead. But there should be two or three more Garcettis.

Remember Ernani Bernardi? That guy would throw his microphone down in disgust when people went on too long. He listened to everything and everything he didn't like made him angry. Wachs? Wachs was the 1 in every other 12-1 vote. We need more individual thinking like that. It would be nice to see some 12-2 and 13-1 votes.

Now Council, especially towards the end of a session, is like an echo chamber. Nobody's inside chamber for long anyway because security is so different these days. But there's not a lot of entertaining grandstanding because there's nobody to grandstand to. Get a real audience in chamber through the whole session and the eulogies will tighten up all by themselves.

I think these councilmembers are just looking for re-election instead of the importance of doing the cities business. Many of these awards could be given at Chamber, school award assemblies, club and organizational luncheon meetings and dinners. Instead they bore us and take the time of working people who have quality of life issues infront of the council. No one cares about some international star, community activist, winning soccer team, or whatever. Instead the person of the year from communities, teams that win their league or state champs, etc would be ok. But these puffers have to stop.

To those Huizar supporters who took down Pacheco's banner and signs from his campaign office on York Boulevard, just thought I'd let you know, the AM/PM video cameras up the street caught you. That's over $500 in stolen property. Go ask Huizar what this means legally, he's a lawyer, right?

City council meetings should be a "reality tv" series. They are embarrassing to this city. They are never in their seats on time. Once they do get there all they do is talk and act as if a meeting isn't taking place. What happened to the maturity of grown adults being respectful of a process. There have been meetings on Fridays where no business takes place just all those presentations. I'm glad Steve Hymon pointed that out. Maybe they'll get sued again for wasting our tax dollars and time.

These are Antonio's friends, the Nation of Islam. They were with him throughout the mayor campaign standing behind him at press conferences. He supported Tony Mohammed when he was arrested for assaulting a police officer. Goes to show Antonio has the same stupid mentality as his friends.

WASHINGTON -- Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan said it's up to the government to prove that a levee wasn't bombed to flood poor black people out of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

Farrakhan said he's heard that military explosives may have been used to blow a hole in the levee, resulting in what he said would amount to "mass murder."

Huizar, who through the last reporting period has raised nearly $380,000 including about $90,000 in matching funds, continues to lead the money race. He has also benefited from more than $28,000 in independent expenditures, mostly from unions. Campaign documents revealed that the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees union spent more than $12,000 in 42 instances of what were labeled "estimated salary for walker." Another $11,000 was spent on a union mailer supporting Huizar.

It' particularly irritating when you journey down to City Hall to comment on a serious issue.

If you go from San Pedro, it's at least a half a day off work.

They keep you waiting for two hours with their proclamations and PR, and many times allow only 1 minute for each member of the public to comment on the agenda item.

Then they wonder why we tried to secede.
