Torrance's Lieu says he won't 'maintain the status quo'

City councilman is the only Democrat running in race to replace his mentor, the late Assemblyman Mike Gordon, in the 53rd District.
By Nick Green
Daily Breeze
Indeed, the relatively new Torrance Democratic Club voted only 14-10 to endorse Lieu.

"It was more of a protest vote," said founder and president Carmen Gonzalez, adding that Democrats are now united behind Lieu. "It wasn't against Ted. It was a way of saying they didn't appreciate that (Assembly) Speaker Fabian Nunez had conferred an endorsement before the primary."

But James Crean, president of the Beach Cities Republican Club, said the wishy-washy endorsement speaks to something else. He called Lieu an "undistinguished two-year Torrance city councilman."

"If Lieu was such a great candidate, his hometown Torrance Democratic Club should have endorsed him unanimously and they didn't," Crean said. "Democracy is alive and well with the Republicans and (the Nunez) dictatorship seems to be the rule of the day for the Democrats.

"We have three great candidates to choose from," he added. "Democrats have no choice."

'California's political winds blow south these days. That's the direction of approval ratings (34 percent for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and 27 percent for the state legislature, per the latest survey by the San Francisco-based Public Policy Research Institute). It's also where state Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez headed last week--south of the border, for a quick meeting with Mexican President Vicente Fox.

'What would prompt the speaker, who normally stays within the cozy confines of Sacramento, to try his hand at shuttle diplomacy? Nunez, who lived in Mexico for eight years as a child, said he felt the need to apologize to his second homeland for the Governator's praise of the Minutemen Project and the offhand remark that the U.S.-Mexican border should be "closed." But it's hard to ignore the timing of his trip: California's special election is two months away and Democrats are banking on a strong Hispanic turnout to kill Schwarzenegger's reform agenda.' Is there some way to report this illegal activity to someone who actually cares? I mean besides Mayor Sam.

Local departments are heavily protected by our local politicians, it might be shoved under the rug, so go the federal way.

Remember Stephen Cooley shoving the LAUSD audits under the rug and Laura Chick participating in the cover up...same thing will happen, so go FEDERAL, contact an attorney general with copies sent to FBI.

Antonio Villaraigosa spent twice as much as incumbent James K. Hahn to win the May runoff election for mayor of Los Angeles, according to the final tally of campaign finances filed Monday.

The new mayor spent $5.2 million compared with $2.5 million for Hahn, although Hahn substantially outspent Villaraigosa in the March round of the mayoral election, the campaign reports show."

Not So Fast
Herb Wesson’s cakewalk turns into a challenge
by ROBERT GREENE

"...Denise Fairchild slipped in quietly, filing to run for the seat without fanfare...she has a shot, but it could prove hard for her to keep up. Wesson’s campaign is chaired by fellow former Assembly Speaker Bob Hertzberg, and he won the quick endorsement of every Democratic statewide elected official. He had broad backing from the SEIU representatives, who are to take their recommendation to the County Fed — where Ludlow now reigns, and where he once directed the labor group’s political efforts.

If that’s not enough, Wesson was redirected to the council race at the urging of several labor and political leaders, including Ludlow, who wanted to steer him away from a face-off against Mark Ridley-Thomas for a state Senate seat next year. Plus, Ludlow once worked on Wesson’s staff.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, also a former Assembly speaker and a friend of Wesson’s from their Sacramento days, is expected to support Wesson as well. But it’s not a lock. Villaraigosa picked Fairchild to be on his mayoral transition team.

Fairchild’s bid could spur a debate. Her campaign is being handled by Parke Skelton and Steve Barkan, the consultants who piloted Villaraigosa to victory in the mayor’s race. They generally pick the more progressive candidates to represent, and could help Fairchild stake out ground that competes with Wesson’s labor ties..."

Tonight, I heard one of the worst things I have heard in a long time: a supposed man of God suggested that the South deserves the death and devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina because it is revenge for centuries of racism.

As first reported by KFI’s John Ziegler Show, the Reverend Lewis E. Pols Pass Up a Pot of Gold as Rob Reiner Takes the Initiative
There's a gleaming pot of gold within easy grasp of the governor and Legislature that would help them balance the state's deficit-ridden books. But it's looking like the governor's friend, filmmaker Rob Reiner, will beat the pols to the pot.

This is about using it or losing it.
Schwarzenegger and Republicans argue that higher taxes would drive people out of the state.

"I can't imagine that over this small amount of money people are going to say, 'OK, let's leave California,' " Reiner asserts, "because we're taking a very, very big step in improving education, which is essentially the most important way to entice people into the state."

Indeed, the latest poll by the Public Policy Institute of California shows that, among likely voters, education trumps the deficit and taxes by 2 to 1 as an important state issue. In April, a PPIC poll found that 60% favored raising income taxes on the wealthiest Californians to provide extra money for K-12 public schools.

NOW WHO IS AT THE PPIC, WHO REPRESENTED THIS INITIATIVE, WHO IS HE INVOLVED WITH....TRUJILLO, BOB HERTZBERG AND HIS WIFE A FOUNDER OF PPIC AND CURRENT STAFF, IS THIS ETHICAL? WHAT A CONFLICT OF INTEREST...MESSY SHIT.

PUBLIC DATA FROM LA OBSERVED

Hertzberg family feud*
The Daily News' James Nash reports on an unusual court hearing yesterday where Bob Hertzberg's ex-wife asked that he be stopped from running for mayor. Karen Moskowitz argued that Hertzberg should not get to reduce his child support payments to their sons (as he sought) in order to run. Hertzberg made more than $1 million as an attorney last year but has said he will cut back his hours and reduce his compensation to $300,000 to campaign this year. If elected, he would make $186,989. The judge did not immediately rule, but there was lively discussion, including a complaint by Moskowitz that Hertzberg pays a driver $60,000 a year.

Hertzberg told the Daily News: "I weighed this very seriously before entering into this. I don't want to do anything that hurts my boys. I don't think it has any bearing on my ability to serve Los Angeles." He is married now to Cynthia Ann Telles, a UCLA professor of medicine and city library commissioner.

* More: Matt Krasnowski's story for Copley News Service says that Moskowitz was seeking an increase to $10,315 monthly. The judge ordered Hertzberg to continue paying $9,800 for now and set another hearing for July. Hertzberg alleged in a declaration that his ex was trying to hurt his political reputation.

LA OBSERVED

Ex-wife Karen Moskowitz's attorney, Judith Salkow Shapiro, argued that Hertzberg's sons shouldn't be penalized for their father's political ambitions. She said the child-support obligations should not be reduced from about $9,800 a month to $1,800.
The judge responded that there's a larger societal benefit to people like Hertzberg serving the public, citing the example of attorneys who leave behind $500,000 salaries to serve as judges.

"Consistently, society values civic contributions as an important goal equal to the support of children. The court has to balance all of that in each case."

Shapiro said Hertzberg's goals were less noble.

"Now he says, 'I want to take (child support) away -- not to go on the bench, but because I want to run for public office, which I may or may not win, to have all the personal satisfaction of holding that office,"' Shapiro said. "I don't think Mr. Hertzberg has that right."

This is NOT a quote from the real Antonio Villaraigosa -- not the AV that was the "CEO" of CD14 for two full years!

Someone misquoted him, that's for damn sure. 24 months as a CM with 24-plus MAJOR projects on the books -- some of which only required a couple pieces of paperwork and a phone call or two to complete(AND 24 little field staff urchins running around to do his bidding) -- and not ONE single project was completed during his term. Most didn't even move forward.

Either CD14 just got the biggest screwing of its existence, or space aliens abducted Villaraigosa earlier this year and probed him hard enough to break open any "blockage" that was keeping him from getting ANYTHING done.

Shooting at policemen in New Orleans

Bands of armed black gunmen are roaming New Orleans and shots would hear all night long. Now a shocking AP article has given comfirmation that police are being randomly shot at. Also, at least one gun store has been looted and set on fire. At least one person has died from a shooting. Rescue workers, who are racing against the clock to save lives, must be diverted to deal with armed criminal bands.

From AP
"In one east New orleans neighborhood, refugees were being loaded onto the backs of moving vans like cattle, and in one case emergency workers with a sledgehammer and an ax broke open the back of a mail truck and used it to ferry sick and elderly residents.

Police officers were asking residents to give up any guns they had before they boarded buses and trucks because police desperately needed the firepower: Some officers who had been stranded on the roof of a motel said they were being shot at overnight."

Woman from Oakland Video comes forward
The woman who was severely beaten by an all black mob in the notorious "Oakland Video" has come forward. She never reported the beating to cops because she was scared and did not trust the Oakland Police to protect her. The reason for the beating was because she turned down an offer by a pimp. Oakland, which is less than 18% white, has come to resemble a third world country. Is this a glimpse into the future of America?

Mass Looting in New Orleans, Martial Law considered.
New Orleans is being looted in mass. Video and images of looters running through the streets with stolen goods is flooding the media. Residential homes are even being ravaged by looters. It is believed that looting could continue as long as the power is out and streets remain to flooded for police to move around freely.

Car carrying Al Sharpton clocked at 110 mph in a 65 mph after leaving Crawford, Texas.
Al Sharpton must think laws don't apply to him. His driver was clocked doing 110 mph in a 65 mph after leaving Crawford, Texas with Al Sharpton in the car with him. The police report says that sherif's deputies chased the car for nine miles. The car was impounded and the driver was arrested for evading with a vehicle and reckless driving. He posted a $1,000 bond.

Question - Is there some type of fraud hotline to report City employees who are cheating and stealing from their employer: IE Us? I work in Airports and the fraud is unbelieveable yet no one in management will do anything even though they know about it.

Is there some way to report this illegal activity to someone who actually cares? I mean besides Mayor Sam.

September 02, 2005 8:47 AM

Answer: I would throw this at two reporters and see if they will refer the situation to the appropriate beat reporters.

Reporters will keep you off the record, if need be. Just provide names, titles and phone numbers to let the journalists do their job.

a. Steven Hymon, Call L.A. Times:
(800) 528-4637. Press "0" and ask for him by name. You will be transfered. Leave your name and number, if you hit voice mail.

b. David Zahniser, Daily Breeze (213) 978-0398

Good luck, I hope your concerns get exposed by the Media.

12:04 you're pointless. Why should Jesse Jackson and the NOI pick up the slack for what they already pay the government to do through taxes? What "red" leader is out there making sure that the "red" citizens of New Orleans are evacuated? Heck what are YOU doing for "your people" down there Mr. Activism? You're the hypocrite.

p.s. Of course you care about color. That's what you based your entire post on.

So I suppose the "outing" of the blog moderators is just a cheap, concocted means of trying to let Chief Parker skate on his repeated promises to reveal the fake 80 NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH ORGANIZATIONS -- Villaraigosa's only claim to any kind of significant service to CD14 while it's CM.

That's a pretty elaborate ruse to run, just to avoid keeping a promise, especially since we all knew it was a lie to begin with, and "CHIEF FAKER'S" lies were even worse. Take a lesson from AV, the master. Just don't even bother trying to keep promises. Most people forget, anyway. . .

We demand and deserve more inside info; we want the real scoop not a retread.

Rick is a fine man. A Great Reporter. Loves to dig.

The reason I didn't mention him is the nature of the request: Fraud at LAX. Sadly, the Daily News is too thinly staffed to really cover the airport on an issue like this.

I would recommend Daily News investigative journalist Beth Barrett 818-713-3731. However, there must be some type of San
Fernando Valley nexus to get their attention.

If this fraud can be tied to the Valley, call Beth too.

Mexicans showed Californians how to pan for gold and introduced the technique of using mercury to separate silver from worthless ores. Certain foods commonin the U.S. are of Hispanic origin: tacos, tortillas, Caesar salad, and chili con carne, which was invented about 1880 by Mexican-Americans living in Texas. In 1992, salsa outsold ketchup for the first tine in the United States.

They use race to get their message across and then threaten police officers and the city if they don't get their way. Read their philosophy. There's innocent people being killed every week in South LA and these idiots think its all about them. Daily News....City attorney: Foe of LAX expansion can be on panel
A longtime opponent of expansion plans at Los Angeles International Airport can serve as a member of the city Airport Commission - AS LONG AS SHE RECUSES HERSELF FROM DECISIONS INVOLVING A LAWSUIT over airport modernization, the City Attorney's Office said Friday.

The legal opinion regarding Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's nomination of attorney Valeria Velasco of Playa Del Rey, however, also raised questions on how effective she could be on the seven-member panel overseeing airport operations.

Velasco had been president of a group known as ARSAC that opposed the $11 billion modernization plan for LAX and filed suit in January to try to block its implementation.

I can't believe ANTONIO is inviting the NO victims to LA when we already have a homeless population of 10,000 and many of them with no shelter. Is he crazy? He's also asking airlines to give free tickets for them to fly here. Also has 70 of our police officers ready to go. He's sending 1,000 paid city workers to volunteer.

What is he thinking? They already have the Nat'l Guard and enough volunteers from cities closer by. If he was smart (and we all know he's not) why didn't he think of starting a donation campaign throughout the city? DUMB DUMB DUMB

OK. Black people should stop paying taxes and devote all that money to funding PUSH and NOI. That way Jesse Jackson and Tony Muhammad can concentrate on assiting black people (only)whenever disater strikes. Of course with all that money, Jesse and the NOI would have a lot of other ideas about what to do in (or to) this country. Either way, conservatives will be so happy that black people have adopted a "no-taxation" mantra and are "taking care of themselves" Great idea.

4:00 anon ... You are a crackhead. Posters here keep asking why Jesse and NOI didn't organize their own evacuation and relief efforts. Jesse and U.S. Muslims already pay taxes and should fully expect the government to respond adequately to a catastrophe (what is FEMA for again?) and have a right to complain when they feel that responsibility is not being met. If "others" think Jesse/NOI can't complain, they and others shouldn't have to pay taxes to fund irresponsive orgs, bureaus, programs, etc. and should fund those orgs that "others" feel are "responsible for taking care of their own." Master paradox, satire, reading comprehension, graduate from at least middle school, THEN post. Idiot.
