Bush Chief Justice Pick: Roberts

Following the death of Chief Justice William Renhquist on Saturday, President Bush has chosen his previous pick to replace retiring Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, John Roberts, to serve as Chief Justice.

Its an interesting and unexpected move, and one that leaves him still with one more pick for the court and an opportunity to put his mark on the court for some time to come.

Funeral services for Renhquist will begin on Wednesday and confirmation hearings for Roberts are expected to begin Thursday, though Democrats may seek to block them.

Apparently moving Roberts up to Chief means withdrawing his nomination as Associate, which means O'Connor stays on until replaced. Seems the White House wants to take confirmation processes one at a time.

Otherwise, a more interesting move, if it were available, would have been to convince O'Connor to return as Chief for just a year or two, with Roberts still replacing her as Associate. This would have allowed her and Bush to make history.

Besides O'Connor's issue of caring for her husband, this would have required two confirmations this month, if the Court is to be functional by October. But now she will have to be back as Associate until the WH finds another replacement for her.

**NEWS FLASH**

President George W. Bush to announce on Tuesday the nomination of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton as Supreme Court nominee thus averting any embarrassment to the Republican Party in 2008.

Sources close to the President say he was determined to avert "an ass-kicking" by the presumed Democratic front-runner.

The President will make his announcement en route to New Orleans. Famed hip-hop artist, Kanye West, recently said in a nationally televised fundraiser to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina that President Bush "doesn't care about black people." Some are speculating that the nomination of Senator Clinton to the Supreme Court may shore up the the little support the President has in the African-American community.

There is also word that the President may consider pushing former President Bill Clinton as the next United Nations Secretary-General. President Clinton has long been regarded as the first "black president" in America. The Republicans seem to be taking this seriously. The President's aides believe that these two moves will surely help the Republican Party win over black voters in the 2006 Congressional elections as well as the 2008 Presidential election.

Sources close to Rev. Pat Robertson would not comment on the issue only to say that "Robertson calls for all Republicans to take out the nominees." It is uncertain what exactly Roberton meant by his comments, but the Secret Service is investigating. The LA Times also sought comment from Rev Jerry Falwell, a staunch critic of the Clintons, however, calls by the Times to Falwell's home were met by his message machine. The message went on for what seemed like minutes harrassing people of color, homosexuals and people of other religions.

The Republicans have Bill Frist, Newt Gingrich, John McCain and others...nothing too exciting to motivate their own base let alone the independents across the country. Hillary will energize the Democratic Party and gives even independents a better alternative. She is not my first choice, but hell she's better then the rest of them.

John Roberts will face an swift confirmation vote in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. I am sure there will be a lot of questions from Democratic committee members but his nomination will be relatively easy.

If the President were nominating Scalia or Thomas as Chief Justice then we would have a political fight on our hands. Let's see who the President nominates as the Associate Justice. The President surprised us the first time when he nominated Roberts while many other people speculated that it was going to be another woman or a minority such as Alberto Gonzales.

Without giving his aides too much credit, they must have planned this one out based on the Chief Justice's deteriorating health condition and Justice O'Connor's retirement from the bench. I am sure they thought this far ahead.

We should also consider the fact that two other justices may in fact retire over or fall ill over the next 4 to 8 years meaning the next election will either seal the deal for conservatives in the Supreme Court or remain relatively balanced. Who knows, but the Dems should be a little worried if they look out that far in the future.

Both the Democrats and the Republicans eat out of the same doggie bowl. They are the same party and America needs change!

Jefferson once said, "We need a revolution every 20 years in order to keep the political integrity."

This is a serious setback for Justice Breyer, who is sick and tired of holding the door open for the other justices all the time.

The replacement for O'Conner will get that honor, but since it now Rehnquist that will be replaced, the new Chief will walk through the door first, and never have to hold it.

Breyer wil have to wait a while longer for a new door stop.
