Rehnquist Is Dead
Word out of Washington is that Chief Justice William Renhquist has died. While the fervor is already starting to gear up as to President Bush's pick of Judge John Roberts to fill the post vacated by the retiring Sandra Day O'Connor, the noise will pick up even greater as Bush fills both Renhquist's seat on the court as well as the Chief Justice spot.

After The Levy break casued by Bush and the sad exuse for a respose, I thought Bush had pretty much ruined America as much as anyone culd, but now he will get to nominate yet another Supreme? There goes the neighborhood.
As Darryl Zanuck said when he heard that Harry Cohn had died, "It almost makes you believe in God".
We don't need another conservative on the supreme court.
I can't believe Antonio is opening up the old Queen of Angels hospital and bringing 250 familes from New Orleans. If I were one of the over 10,000 homeless people who sleep on skid row I would be pissed. Why couldn't he find these beds for them?

This won't happen, but in this time of trouble Bush could make a bold move that could also seal getting John Roberts on the court.
Appoint Bill Clinton as Chief Justice.
He could make a deal with the Democrats to sail Roberts through and they would totally go for Bill.
He wouldn't be the first past president to serve in the role, Taft served as Chief Justice in the 20s following his term as President.
Clinton is certainly qualified, having been a legal professor at Harvard and quite astue when it comes to the law. Yea, he got a blow job, committed perjury and got disbarred, but he wouldn't be the first judge. He actually wouldn't even be a liberal judge, I think he would rule more like O'Connor.
Two more conservative jurists on the court...what a bargain for the President.

Now seriously, let's be rude and blunt enough to consider the problem of moribund geezers that refuse to do the right thing (ie, Sherm Block!) and exit the stage with a modicum of grace in due time -- as well as a sense of responsibility to the public interest.
We have a hallowed and honorable tradition of not speaking ill of the dead -- especially the recently departed. But the fact is that "the Chief" disserved us terribly by hanging on unto the death. Any leader in his position should have been in touch with his colleagues, and known, in this case, that another Justice would likely be stepping down this summer WAY AHEAD OF TIME!
We should not be in a situation of facing a doubled-up court succession (with another geezer waiting in the wings to depart) at a time of domestic and international crises.
Time for clarity: GEEZERS! NOBODY IS INDISPENSABLE! PLAN FOR SUCCESSION AND GET THE FUCK OUT OF THE WAY!

ubrayj02 With the outing of Chief and Mayors, I wonder if this site will have the same impact. I doubt it. People are panicked at how these individuals were outed, as we see there are less and less postings.
