Alger Returns

Northridge West Neighborhood Council President Jim Alger has returned from his air mission of mercy to the Gulf Coast region affected by Hurricane Katrina. Jim will be giving us an exclusive report of his activities, but below is the press release sent out by his team upon his return:
Assembly Candidate Jim Alger (D) put his plane and pilot skills to action flying into stricken areas of the Gulf Coast, bringing needed supplies and ferrying evacuees to shelters. Alger left early September 5th from Van Nuys Airport en route to Biloxi, Mississippi. He returned to Whiteman Airport in Pacoima Tuesday, September 13th.

Alger currently serves as the President of the Northridge West Neighborhood Council and has taken the lead in recruiting volunteers from other neighborhood councils to join him in organizing efforts to provide assistance for those in need. His mission to aid Hurricane Katrina victims has grown to include air and ground operations facilitated by volunteers from Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi and Louisiana. Details of the journey have been posted on the Mayor Sam's Sister City blog at http://mayorsam.blogspot.com

Alger was heartened by the response he has received locally and the outpouring of support. Speaking with Biloxi City Councilman Bill Stallworth Jim Alger said, “I left Bill with a promise that the people of Los Angeles would help him and his city. I intend to keep that promise.”

After leaving Whiteman Airport directly for his Neighborhood Council Meeting, Jim presented a motion that passed unanimously to “adopt” the City of Biloxi and attempt to raise $50,000.00 for their recovery effort

WELCOME HOME JIM!

We in the City of Los Angeles are so proud of you. That is an unbelievable picture of rubble your standing in. I know pictures don't tell the story, but thank you.

Your actions speak louder than the politicians words.

Jim, you have shown yourself to be a true man of the people repeatedly. I wish we had more people in government like you.

Could we please have more of Alger's "staff" in here to sing his praises?

I really don't think anyone else in the city comments on the posts besides him and his friends.

Why don't you get off your ass and do something? Every one of these posts could be from his mother - who gives a shit? He got off his ass and did something - and he got other people involved.

Maybe you guys would rather have the CD 14 Blogging Team post about what a horrible Mayor Antonio is and why Pacheco is the Golden Boy?

I don't know Alger or anyone connected with him.

Is it possible we just care about something besides recall elections in CD 14?

I can tell you that we are SICK of the CD 14 Bull SHIT.

Alger has maybe 5 negative remarks here in months... either he has a full time staff that monitors this blog constantly and somehow deletes negative remarks instantaneously, or maybe just maybe we actually LIKE Alger and what he has done in and outside this City.

This guy says what he thinks and then ACTS on it. He left his campaign to go help people in ths South, flew back god knows how many hours and according to NBC last Tuesday went straight from the airport to preside over his Neighborhood Council meeting! (OK Jim, I think that is a bit nuts but I admire the hell out of your dedication)

Alger has done some dopey stuff, but he won me over the day he went to City Council and apologized to Tony Cardenas on the council floor. Took a real man to do that, more than I can say for most of that do nothing City Council.

HOW BIG OF AN IDIOT ARE YOU???

Somewhere in CD 14 a Village is missing it's idiot, and Anon 8:53 is it.

Jim did a good thing, but so have countless other folks in the Valley (Daily News has done stories) and throughout the City as well. They are deserve equal praise and they are all not running for office.

Of course other people have done things, but Alger was one of the first, did it at great personal expense, wasn't told to go, and is a medium profile person in Los Angeles Politics which is why we talk about him.

Are you saying 11:55 that other people didn't do things at their own expense and so forth? Your comments in "defense" of Alger are not needed because we are all praising his generosity. However, your comments make me think that the others don't deserve equal praise and support.

No, but I am saying just as the Daily News ignored Algers' unique trip, and chose to spotlight others... Mayor Sam has chosen to spotlight a local politician... which makes sense given this is a political blog.

I am not defending Alger, don't even know him and from what I can see he can handle himself. But your comments seemed as if you were trying to minumize his efforts, which is dumb.

Many negative posters fail to see one thing, the efforts that Jim and others have done are good deeds to help the victims of Katrina.

So what on who did first, second, or third. What matters is that Jim when to bat on this one and made a difference. How many other public figures (locally) went out to help the victims unselfishly...I'm still waiting....well, you see it is honorable of such a person who would go out of their way to personally help. I am sure the people he assisted appreciate it, they don't care who came first, second, or third, but that someone did come to help.
