Who's Hot -- Who's Not

I've been receiving e-mails from many of you asking for an updated top 5 list. So here it is.

HOT

1. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa - Goes to Washington DC, John North follows him to the nations capitol -- good times had by all. Many in City Hall are finally realizing how hard this man works along with his staff. Also gets kudos for his Police Commission and Airport commission appointments.

2. Councilwoman Wendy Greuel - When going over the who's hot list I really didn't think Wendy would make it again, but there she is fighting for the little guy. Today's Daily News has her leading the fight to stop McMansions from ruining the character of neighborhoods.

3. Assemblyman Lloyd Levine - I would not have put him on my list , but there's Michelle Castillo in the Daily News declaring that Assemblyman Levine is hot.

4. Assemblywoman Cindy Montanez - She has over 300 people at her open house, runs for the State Senate and writes a kick-ass bill to stop the paparazzi.

5. Howard Fine - Usually this reporter sucks. He is a pompous know-it-all that never will let a politician answer a question without a snide remark to his friend Dave Bryant, but he seems to be writing some decent articles about the Mayor for once -- keep it up Howard people are beginning to like you.

6. Jim Alger - A candidate for State Assembly making some early noise about his ties to the community, this President of a neighborhood council has shown repeatedly that he is one tough hombre. He's also the only candidate for any office actively blogging on Mayor Sam.

NOT HOT

1. Councilman Greig Smith -- Seems to be in a whole lot of trouble for his Wal-mart stance. Why the Councilman seems so bent on pissing off a whole lots of folks is beyond me.

2. Nick Pacheco - The only positive thing i can say about Nick Pacheco is that his face is not on a clock. Good Job! However, he really must be on a suicide mission because every corner he turns he realizes that he can't raise any money, well his opponent Mr. Huizar is on pace to raise 4 times as much money than little nicky. Don't worry Nick, the district loves you! I mean you are only the first councilman to ever be kicked out of office after one-term in CD 14 history. My early prediction is that Nick does marginally better than he did for his run at DA. Can we all say 20% of the vote?

3. The Leak - This administration official who decided it would be cool to leak the airport story to the "Z" man is about to find out why "she" will be fired shortly. You will stop these unapproved leaks or face the consequences of your actions. Oh and stop giving inside info to Roderick -- this message is going out to the guy and girl that are leaking this stuff. I know you guys.

4. City News Service -- Seriously guys you need to spice up your stories a little bit, getting a little creative won't hurt you.

I'll have an updated list next Tuesday -- happy blogging.

***** Update*****

Because Jim Alger is the only one with the guts to come on this blog and speak up for himself using his real name. I've taken him off the "not hot" list and placed him on the "hot" list. Congratulations Mr Alger. Your face is still on a clock however.

On your Not Hot list...

Smith, yea he stepped in a pile of shit. If he didn't want the letters becoming public it probably wasn't such a hot idea to send copies to Congressman, Assemblymen and Senators.

Algers' move of exposing his antics was a pretty predictable move, and gave him the very publicity he wanted. I do wonder if Smith has so much time on his hands as to attack a Neighborhood Council maybe we need to give him more stuff to do. BAD movee Smith. Chalk one up to Alger.

As for Alger, yea the clock is really cornball... dunno what he was thinking there accept I guess why not? Doesn't cost him anything.

Gotta love the know-it-alls who believe that an election is called before the campaign even started.

Leak- How you would know Chief is beyond me.

Hey Chief... from what I read Smith went after Alger and this Ramstead person threatening them with a lawsuit (Mayorsam was the only place I saw the Bribe story a few weeks back).

Sounds to me like Smith is trying to do Smyths' dirty work for him. It is Smith that needs to figure out he isn't running against Alger.

I wonder how much money Wal Mart gave to Smiths campaign???

Hey Chief,

Where have you been? Smith and Englander have been attacking Alger for months. About damn time he responded.

I think it is funny he thinks Alger was trying to raise his politial profile, so he threatens Alger because of what someone else said, and raises Algers' political profile!

This attack predictably backfired against Smith in a pretty big way. If Smith actually sued, many of Englander and Smiths actions would come to light and that would be bad for Smith.

4:38-- if the Governator is so weak, why is he being allowed to hold such an expensive special election in November when NONE of the ballot initiatives is at all urgent. as far as i am concerned, California is screwed by the special election no matter what happens (of course, we're more screwed if the ballot measures pass). and it should never have come to this point if Fabian was doing his job. also Dems had to cave AGAIN THIS YEAR on money for education because they were afraid of losing in November. any way you slice it, it sucks. and it takes two to tango. voters realize that. 4:21 (AKA 2:42)

The Governor is not being "allowed" to have a special election. It's one of his powers granted by the state constitution. The only way to take it away would be an amendment approved by voters.

The Governor was going to call it no matter what. That's the only way he could explain his inability to gain any GOP seats in the legislature (as referenced by Anon 4:21).

Even with 8-10 people on the ballot, Jose won't make it into a runoff. And early next year little Jose Weazel-ar will still be trying to explain to constituents why LAUSD spends $10K per year to train more drop outs than any major city.

Four years in council, and Pacheco has 50 projects up and running for Villaraigosa to dance around and pretend he's working for two years. Four years on the school board and Jose is still unknown in the part of CD14 he (supposedly) serves.

He's having to run like a brand new face, and he LIVES AND WORKS FOR TAXPAYERS in the district. People in his OWN district are saying "I thought Tokofsky was our board member!!!"

LA DAILY NEWS:

Mr. Smith throws a fit

Litigious city councilman undermines his own reputation

If we called Los Angeles City Councilman Greig Smith a whiner and a bully, would it be defamation?

Not according to anyone who knows anything about the law. But just in case, someone better tell Smith, lest he threaten to sue us.

Because the way Smith is carrying on these days, it seems he's not only thin-skinned, but also ignorant of the protections the First Amendment provides.

The councilman has threatened to whack Northridge West Neighborhood President Jim Alger and Vice President Sherry Ramstead with slander lawsuits because the two had the gall to criticize his support of a controversial proposed Wal-Mart in Northridge.

Apparently after decades of working safely behind the scenes in City Hall, Smith wasn't prepared for the criticism that comes with public life and being a public official.

Alger and Ramstead have both said that Wal-Mart's contribution of a $166,000 gift to a community fund -- and Smith's subsequent backing of the proposed store -- amount to "nothing short of bribery." That's their opinion; they're entitled to it.

Opinions are constitutionally protected speech. Alger and Ramstead didn't say Smith committed a crime, they only said that, in their analysis, they find his conduct unethical. It's the kind of thing people say about politicians all the time.

If Smith can't handle it, he's in the wrong business.

He's also out of line with his threats to sue the two community leaders if they don't retract their statement. Such a suit would be laughed out of court, and surely Smith, or at least his lawyer, ought to know that.

Which suggests that the purpose of Smith's petty threats isn't to get an offending statement retracted, or even to go to court, but to silence would-be critics.

You could say it's nothing short of intimidation.

Ironically, Smith says he only wants to "protect my rights and reputation." But far from preserving his public image, complaining and threatening spurious lawsuits only make him look like -- in our opinion -- a whiner and a bully.

And he can sue us if he doesn't like being described that way. We'll look forward to his learning a lesson when he has to pay not only his attorney's fees, but ours as well.

I am not that big of an Alger fan, certainly not enough of one to get a clock, but ya gotta admire the hell out of a guy who stands up to Smith and wins, in the press wars anyway.

I wonder how many people in CD 12 Smith has sent threatening letters to? How many people were silenced? I have a difficult time believing that 2 years into his term this is the only time he has done it.

Looks like the Daily News today kicked whatever life was left in Smith right out of him. Think he'll get the message? Probably not as long as he has his mini-me Englander at his side. That little twirp ha got to be the worst advisor known to man, unless his plan is to force Smith out so he can run himself... then he's... who am I kidding he'd still be an asshole.
