At Least He’s Doing Something
When Mayor Hahn isnt professing shock regarding the public relations firm he channeled millions of dollars to, hes working to fix one of twelve hundred potholes the recent rains opened up.
He donned a yellow construction vest and steel-toed boots for his news conference to show people hes doing everything he can to fix the problem of the potholes. Noting his father, Ken Hahn, was the pothole killer, the Mayor explained fixing potholes is one of those ways to let people know what government is doing. A slick publicity stunt combined with a mention of his well-liked and well-respected father Can anyone say shameless pandering?
Publicity stunt aside, the government really isnt doing everything it can. How do I know? The government told me. The Los Angeles Times quotes the citys assistant director of street services, Nazario Sauceda, Were not going to fix all the potholes in the city; were just trying to fix the potholes reported by residents. Riiiiight. Fixing all of the potholes wouldnt leave the Mayor with any time to profess his shock at the rampant scandals in his administration.

Hahn belongs in a pot hole. . .... ....at least partially covered with blacktop, the way he has treated this City.

In my crystal ball I see more of these "re-elect me because..." events. And it tells me they will work.

I loved the Times author's point about the secret to political longevity (“You’ve got to own the road”) and how council member Wendy Greuel abides by it like gospel to earn herself the (hugely unflattering) nickname of “pothole queen”.
From the mayor’s point of view, I suppose it may have been hard to resist such an easy publicity stunt. If one is running for re-election in a commuter city, what else do all his constituents have in common but their dependence on city roads? Quick political payoff.
