Bond Deal Helps Loyola High

The LA Times only gives a brief nod: Council Approves Bond Deal to Help Loyola High
The Los Angeles City Council approved a tax-exempt bond agreement Wednesday that would cost the city nothing but would benefit Loyola High School.

The approval allows the city to issue $30 million in tax-exempt bonds on behalf of the Catholic school, where Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's son is enrolled. No city funds would be at risk, according to a city analysis of the deal, which gives Loyola better financing than would be available through the private sector
Zanhiser however hits it in the Daily Breeze: Jesuit school wins L.A. council OK on funding

If no public funds are at risk, then fine. I'm for supporting private schools so long as it doesn't take away money for public education. And I hate Loyola (my high school's rival).

"tax-exempt bond funding"

Can a blogger in the know of taxes explain what this is and how our council claims our city will not lose money. If the rates are lowered wouldn't the city lose that money?

Does this open a can of worms for more religious schools to request such a package and what makes them so special to receive this?

Oh, I forgot. The Mayor's son Tony Jr. Villaraigosa attends this Loyola school. BTW, why this school only mayor? I'm against any special gifts to religious institutions from government. Church and State should remain separate!

I'm against gifts too. But if no public funds are at risk, then there's no gifting.

Previous blogger, separation of Church and State doesn't mean Church vs. State. It means that the State cannot endorse or promote a religion. It doesn't mean that the State cannot work with institutions.

Will the Villaraigosa City Hall be doing this for any private religious school that asks, or just the ones his children attend?

Don't bother answering -- we all know!

Why doesn't someone have a press conference on this issue? This breaks all ethics rules. I thought corruption was ending at city hall, I see that it has begun at a bigger scale.

Animal rights activists protest at Loyola, this will get the Mayor's attention. You guys are protesting at the wrong places, think about it. Loyola, we know he cares about this place, his kid is the shit there because of DADDY and you can get media to go immediately and broadcast LIVE!

Big developers are getting theirs. Why not mijos's school?
Too bad mijo doesn't attend LAUSD like the rest of "mi gente."
BTW, how many Catholic schoolboys are on the City Council?

Haven't you guys figured out that Antonio loves conflicts between his friends so it gives common folks like us thinking and believing that he's WORKING. And so that in the end he comes into the scene like Prince Valliant and saves his maiden Los Angeles.

Think of this administration as watching the WWE, you know it's fake but you go along with the story line because it's entertaining.

Do your homework...take a look-see and find out how many recent city-councilmen, commissioners, lobbyists and downtown LA "power-brokers" went to Loyola. You think USC is a breading ground for future leaders? Doesn't even come close to Loyola. This school has got roots deeper in Los Angeles than any other educational or social institution...hands down. A.M.D.G.
