Louis Pugliese Makes Announcement Regarding His District 3 School Board Campaign
(A short while ago, MayorSam received the following communique from Louis Pugliese);
Dear Friends,
Last week, the city clerk's office verified my ballot petitions, qualifying me to appear on the ballot as a candidate for the LAUSD District 3 Board seat in the upcoming March election.
I had decided to enter the race knowing that there were a field of other potential candidates willing to face the incumbent. As it has turned out, a number of candidates did not qualify, and the UTLA favorite also withdrew her name, leaving only my opponent and myself in nomination. While a campaign against an incumbent is always tough, I am now in the position of running once again without the support of either the teacher's union or of community groups aligned with the Mayor.
I find myself left with a difficult decision- to either concede to my opponent and withdraw my name from the ballot by the deadline tomorrow, or to remain in nomination to promote what I feel are the best ideas for our city's children, and to ensure that voters will at least have a choice in this critical time for public schools.
Tonight I have chosen the latter. I am announcing my official candidacy for the LAUSD Board of Education seat in District 3. I look forward to seeing you all on the campaign, and expect that this third time will certainly be the "charm."

This is getting crazy. Rumor has it that UTLA has reached out to Galatzan, because Pugliese is in fact a more radical reformer. He publicly supports firing bad teachers within a year (LA Times interview), Charter schools, and many more real reforms. Tony and UTLA have their charade, but they are in fact still working together.
Doesn't really sound like the guy wants the job all that bad. I'd have trouble taking him seriously after this.

I can't wait to see how long board votes will stretch out on critical issues if this guy is elected...
"Madame chair, I'd like to ask that this issue be tabled for a fifth time, for another two weeks, until I can see whether my people find there's any political advantage in me actually taking the position I thought I was going to take?"
Yeah, the very fact that UTLA has thrown Pugliese (a teacher himself) under the school bus twice now pretty much tells the whole story. He's got my vote.

Let's not forget it's been their impulsive, politically-driven decisions that got us into this mess in the first place. It is a Board of Education, after all. Maybe some thoughtfulness on these matters would be appropriate.
The class size has increased
The dropout rate has risen
The school year has been shortened
Don't defend the status-quo. The way they do it DOESN'T WORK.

There's nothing to indicate the "new" guy would do any better, either.
Saying that a challenger doesn't seem to be qualified, in part because he can't even seem to make up his own mind about running -- isn't "defending the status quo" -- it's more like considering the possibility that the devil you don't know may actually be worse than the one you do.
Every election, there's someone who says, "well this one can't be any worse."
I think the most notable time recently was when people here at Mayor Sam's said... "Well, Villaraigosa can't be any worse than Hahn."
And they were SO very wrong.
10:39, the blog was all Obama/McCain for a whole year. It's about far more than local news. There is loads of information that isn't local. Local can also mean county, neighboring county, and even the state.
I guess you haven't seen all the Brown/Whitman stuff or Boxer/Carly stuff, either.

What does Hacopian have to do with this?
UTLA will be endorsing Pugliese, it will be announced in January. He cut a deal with them after Kolodny dropped off.
Louie is disgusted with UTLA's PACE at this point- It's not clear he'd even accept an endorsement from them now. I doubt there is any "deal" they could cut except on his terms. In this part of the city, the Union is a major liability. Rejecting UTLA will be a badge of honor for him.

Presidential races have almost no impact on LA.
CA is a liberal fiefdom. National politics and rules don't apply to us.
The 9th is the most liberal court in the country's judicial system.

Tamar was spotted Saturday meeting with AJ Duffy, Hacopian and other union leaders. Looks like they'll do anything to keep real reform from happening, and she'll do anything to advance herself politically. I'm going with Pugliese at this point.

You sold your soul to the devil Louis.
What a crock of crap. Louis Pugilese is no reformer, he's a pompous, arrogant, windbag who just loves the sound of his own voice. Sit in some of his classes sometime.
He has less understanding of what is actually going on in the classroom than Galatzan does and that's saying something.
Look, he has some good ideas, like bringing back trade tech classes and perhaps introducing a trade school diploma, but other than that the cupboard is bare. After talking to him at length, I had no real idea of why he wanted to be on the school board except so that he could be on the school board.
Same reason he's on the Board of Directors for the Community Charter School.
You don't have to trust me on this, spend some time with him. Ask him questions that need answers that aren't prepackaged sound bytes and see what you get.
